Argonians: what are they good for?

d_20d_20 Member RarePosts: 1,878

First off, I think Argonians are the coolest looking race. I know that's purely a personal preference. Those of you who also think so will understand what I mean. Otherwise, go back to your high elves, you people who like "pretty" races.

The thing is, I don't really see how the racials would encourage rolling an Argonian.

http://esohead.com/races/6-argonian

Amphibious: Sure, I would like to swim faster, but it's not worth the skill points. But effectiveness of potions could be a good one. I don't use them often now at vr3. How useful is this?

Argonian resistance: Increase of max health is always good and resistance to poison and disease.

Quick to mend: Increases healing received. Good, also, especially for a tank.

Restoration expertise: Increases resto experience gain by 15% -- good while leveling, but at endgame not so much.

These perks look like they would be good for a jack-of-all trades with health and healing buffs, but would excel at none. But I don't know. Any other input on this? I was thinking of rolling either an Argonian sorc healer (but I think Dunmer, Altmer, or Breton would be better sorcs because of their racials) or a DK. (But Orcs, Redguards, and Imperials seem to have much stronger racials for that).

I know people say play what you like, but I also know the racials do matter at a certain point, from my experience. But I don't have VR experience with Argonians. Anyone have a high VR Argonian?

EDIT: I found this discussion in the ESO forums -- http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/65730/any-news-on-argonians-racial-skill-buffs

They have style. Like gnome warriors in eq1. That's all that matters.

Played one during the beta. Back when there was set races for each faction. Realized down the road I could play something else for what I was going for. It does feel like Argonians get the shaft when it comes to the passives. Maybe in the future they will show them a bit more support.

The question is do you want to Min/Max or do you want to engage in a more aesthetic/visceral experience?

Having gone down both roads in many games I have come to the conclusion that the latter is more satisfying. I play what looks and feels good to me and let gear/skill points/whatever make up for whatever may be inherently lacking.

I would say be the best Argonian in your chosen profession that you can.

My Arg Templar is VR10. I rolled for the potions bonus (very useful for a templar) and the tail.

    Mostly the tail.

Q:"Argonians: what are they good for?"

    A: Slaves.

They are the only race that looks truly monstrous, thats what I like seeing them around. My favourite Argonian was the one in the Redguard desert of Alik'r. There was this Redguard palace warrior round the back of the palace near the water stills (large pools of water covered with a moisture trap). She was there because she suspected something unthinkable was going on. The Argonian at the back told you he only goes for a dip in the still when the sand is too much for him. :)

Monsterous yes, but I love the Evil look of the Dark Elves.  I was rolling an Argonian DK tank, until I looked at the racials and decided to scroll through the Dark Elf character models.  I was impressed with how "devil" I could make my character look, and this is the frist game I have ever played an ELF of any sort

They're great for underwater content, of which there is none in ESO..... (There is in Skyrim tho)

It's something I believe needs doing, but I can only find players saying that a dev said it, and not the actual dev post itself.

I wasn't able to find anything official on it either, but I did find the thread in the official forums where people also referred to the devs revisiting it. I couldn't find a primary source, though.

I think they are setup to make excellent tanks, really.  Increased health, some resistance, and extra healing.

    You make me like charity

  • d_20d_20 Member RarePosts: 1,878

I'm really tempted to make a DK. There are some ok racials for tanking. Probably Redguards, Imperials, Orcs..even Dunmer would be better DKs.

Do you think I will be gimped as Argonian DK in VR content, or is that just a min/max thing?

Does anyone here actually have an Argonian above VR5?

Like I said earlier, my Arg Templar is VR10.

I'm finally prepared to admit that was a bit of a mistake. With the questionable racials combined with the rather magic-hungry skills of the Templar, I really wish I could pick another race. I've not gone through the patch notes fully, but I'm struggling even more on that toon (more deaths due to running out of magicka and, bizarrely, I'm now occasionally getting one-shotted by regular mobs).

You are not going to be gimped. TESO might well have been the first mainstream MMO since Lotro that has had racial bonuses that actually effect gameplay. But they hardly make as much difference as old school MMOs. I think the pitch here is about right, meaningful but not template determining stat advantages.

I have to take what you're saying seriously, since you have the VR 10.

I have a VR5 Redguard templar, which would be fine if I wanted to tank, but I wanted to make a healer. So far I'm doing fine with magicka management, but I have not idea how it will be down the road if I ever make to VR 10. I also wish I had made another race like Breton or Altmer, but I just wanted to make a Redguard without thinking about it too much.

The Argonian NPCs are great. They all have something interesting to say, they have a distinct culture and unusual names.
  • HorusraHorusra Member EpicPosts: 4,411
Argonian healer...spec up the bonus to resto....once that is max (faster than others) respec those points into what yoru dual spec is.  Max restor staff spec can pretty much solo anything if you are patient.  Extra healing, maxed out Resto....makes you a low DPS, but almost unkillable PvE machine.
