How is this game under Perfect World as publisher?

RazeeksterRazeekster Member UncommonPosts: 2,591
I have a lot of problems with Perfect World publishing games because a lot of them turn out to be P2W or their cash shops turn out to be absolutely ridiculous with pricing (example: some of their games have $50 mounts!). So my question is does Champions Online suffer from any of these problems? I've been looking for a great superhero MMO since I got bored of DCUO and since City of Heroes was shut down that's not even an option.

well.. pwe has a bad rep, and they deserve it, but they don't try to fleece people as bad in some games as in others.

I would suggest to give CO a quick attempt, I never tried it myself so can't say, but comparing NWO cash shop for STO or raiderz, and I see quite a difference in the 'value' of zen in different games.

CO is probably one of the few games I really really really enjoy these days

Compared to Neverwinter, the Cash shop is extremely cheap, a travel power is normally like 500zen ( 5 dollars) or even a vehicle is 12-15$

Plus, the game it self is amazing ^^ its defentally worth subbing though.

Is costume customization as good as City of Heroes was? Sorry I keep mentioning City of Heroes by the way. I had a soft spot for it and it was a very sad day for me when it got closed down. Also how is the community? I like a game where it the user base is active and actually talks and jokes with one another. I don't want a dead chat.

Character customization (by the look and cosmetics) is usually among those attributes in which Cryptic is good at - CoH also was a Cryptic game until the breakup. Class customization in CO is maybe even better than it was in CoH, at least with Freeform. (though if you start to play free, you won't have that. Unless you buy it from the Store).

Community, I wasn't in since the last anniversary a few months ago (too many other games :) ), but I never had any problem with the community, and I don't remember the dead chat effect either.

For the starter question, as I remember you can play for free the whole game, you don't really need anything from the Store. So if you want to have some superhero mmo fix, you won't lose a thing if you give CO a try. There are a decent number of CoH refugees inside as well.

Hmm, Champions Online is fun, but it's... meh. And I say this as a person who shelled out $300 for a lifetime subscription.

It has the best character customization among MMOs (would be better if they didn't deliberately use simplified character models to emulate comic book art), the power customization is fairly robust (moreso if you're Freeform, which requires either a subscription or buying a Freeform slot for $50), and you'll be able to keep yourself busy with the content they have for about three months.

After those three months about the only thing you'll have to look forward to are the buggy monthly events or new vehicles being released in the cash shop. No more effort is being put into hideouts (which died pretty early, the lead artist for hideouts got transferred to STO and nobody replaced him), no new story content, a handful of new costume pieces every six months (compared to new sets every two weeks prior to becoming PWE's pet), barely any bug patches (unless it's to fix something their monthly events introduce), so on and so forth. People have speculated it's because all the developers have been "temporarily" transferred to work on NWO, but nobody really knows why the quality has gone down or if it will ever go back up.

So I would say it's definitely worth a shot, but with the caveat that you need to wait at least half a year before deciding to put any serious cash into the game.

Oh, don't openly badmouth Wolverine or any popular comic book character in zone chat. If enough people set you on ignore, the chat server will automatically mute you for 24 hours. The chat server is shared with STO and NWO as well (so you can send whispers and mail to people in those games), so I believe you'll get muted there as well. Cryptic has stated this feature is "working as intended" and that it's far too integrated to change, thus they'll never "fix" it.

    They have ruined the game.
