I'm still baffled at the misinformation about this game being P2W. Some people are going absolutely nuts about LP pots, and most of them have very little knowledge of the true effect on these. They are not some OMFGWTFBBQIWIN button. In fact - compared to most cash shops - Trion's is very tame, and about as non-p2w as you can get. I'm tired of defending this topic, but it's really getting lame.

I just wish they would have made this game P2P, but then the f2p players would be crying about that too. Lose/Lose situation for Trion, but they're doing the best they can to please everyone.

No but there is PvP after 30 so it is a really big part of the meta game.  A draw for those not so much into PvP would be the housing, crafting, farming and alternate class systems.  Each of the 10 class types are leveled separately as well as the crafting ("Vocations" and there are 21 of them I believe).  XL did try to offer a really wide variety of things to do and this includes the PvP system.  They allow people to be a pirate who kills their own faction members but they also have an evidence/trial system to put them in jail.  You can also be a bounty hunter or "lawman" that hunts the pirates or keeps the enemy faction in check.

I typically favor a consensual approach to PvP in MMOs but I think AA has enough systems in place that the PvP adds to the depth of the game rather than take it away.

They should open up the game to all for beta. They treat you like a non paying customer in a beta. I have major labor point restrictions that keep me from doing the part of the game I want to play along with further restrictions that handicap me in other parts of the game.

My brother who was in the beta too was in his mid twenties and still going from quest hub to quest hub. I said enough of this I don't want to quest I can do this in any MMO so I logged out uninstalled the game and never looked back.

IDK how many of you tried to play it as a F2P player. Believe me when I say F2P players are severely punished. There is no way in hell  a F2P player can keep pace with a paying player.

The sad part is all these reviewers are playing as paid players. So we are getting a less than honest review. We all know all reviewers get paid for positive reviews, none can be trusted to provide fair reporting of the ups and downs of a game.

That being said, I did have fun, somewhat. One thing that isnt mentioned is that the only way to get improved gear early on is thru questing. choo-choo. Another SAD point is that F2P have a harder time since they cant own land to grow crafting material "safely". Even if someone did supply them materials, the labor point system severely dampens and thoughts of "quick crafting". Paid players earn twice as much per tick and offline as well. This may a minor issue to some, but I love crafting and can say that crafting, overall, sucks hard in this game.  Its well thought out, and not easy, but there some really retarded things in it too. I know crafting is not a major selling point to some, but it is to me.

In this day and age of "try before you buy", what I have seen so far would give this game 4/10. 2 points lost to crafting.

Bravo!  rumors are they may change some of those things that made us quit, but try again on the last beta before launch, if its still the same then I'll be joining you putting this game on the "DO NOT INSTALL" list.

Lmao, what is WRONG with you people ?

You refuse to play the game unless XLGames removes the limited amount of quests ? Quests that you are in no way "forced" or required to do ?

Actually, it's probably best you don't attempt to play the game, because you clearly have no idea how player-made content happens...

  • mikunimanmikuniman Member UncommonPosts: 375

Thing is you can say the same for many mmos. They're always parts of the game that will appeal to someone and they will take the path that entertains them the most. it's also the usual that the first 20 or so odd levels are training for the game. Dev's have to consider the fact you could be spanking new to the genre. Don't understand why people still don't get that and rant . "the first 20 levels are so boring, game suks"  Who's to say you have to explore every piece of the game you may not enjoy just to say you've played the game, you don't. But content is still king for that matter

I like the look of ArcheAge specially like the animations.  But still, it feels to much like allot of mmo's I've played to start from scratch again. I don't care for the combat mechanics tab tard is getting so old for me it's boring. The theme doesn't really appeal to me either, gliders and soap box cars just doesn't feel right. I'm not saying a new game has to have everything revolutionary just enough to make the trek to start all over again.

Did you even read the post? I refuse to play because all they give me a option to do is pve quest hub. In this day and age I will not buy a game unless I get to give it a run first. The run they gave me was more like a walk with my legs tied.

I've leveled 2 characters to 50 solo as well - and this is the point where if you don't have a guild - you will simply not see what the point of ArcheAge is IMO.

The game is best played in a guild as getting to know folks that you're going to be playing with at 50 (and beyond with future patches) is what it's all about.

I dont understand the whole pay-wall or f2p punishment, or even the "should have been p2p"...

The cheap people out there that dont want to pay a dime and support trion, you still get to play the game! don't complain about not getting AS MANY Labor points, its free! They have a subscription option... So just subscribe and you get exactly what you would have if f2p wasn't an option.

I'm really looking forward to the game, lets do something different and put some positive energy out there towards mmo's without it instantly being beaten down by nay sayers.

    peace. love. be happy.

What's worse is they added gear stats for PVP. Talk about old out of date conventions.

Can someone confirm this, are there PvP only stats that attempt to balance the game? (Which for me, is a huge no-no, at least in an open world PvP sandbox.)

I need conformation on this as well. Nothing chaps my ass more then gear with pvp stats on them.

It's not true. TOUGHNESS is a PvP Stat that only exists as a gem that can be socketed into leg armor. There are no PvP sets with PvP stats.

i bet they are referring to pvp only gear,ie rewards for pvp ,which in most cases is better than what non pvp can get.all pvp games have it,but they also have an opt out so yu do NOT have to participate. it sounds like aa has no such opt out.pvper's hate that ,less victims.

There is no way players are going to branch out, they will stick with what they know. Rather than suggesting the other systems, MMO's need to pick players up and drop them in a bear pit from which they can't escape without crafting. Kidnap them and make it so they can only get free my engaging in PvP.

You have to get radical now, over a decade of the same template has hoisted the industry onto its on petard, players will not find another way for themselves.

"Why you questing, Bro?" - No one even talks to each other in game anymore so how are they going to even get asked that question? That's the scale of the challenge MMOs face.

The best MMO I have ever seen for this was the tutorial for Vanguard after they brought in the starter island. You did quest lines that were diplomacy or crafting as well as questing. That's a minimum if you want players to do more than the same old MMO. You will notice the Vanguard format was still a form of quests, so you need to lead players away from that in game, or they will never escape the quest hamster wheel.

Didn't get as far as I had anticipated with AA, 12 or 13 was the highest I got.  It felt entirely like your regular run of the mill grinder game for the lower levels.  There weren't enough mobs to kill anywhere for leveling, couldn't get any resources to speak of (no skinning, no leather, nothing like that).  Got to the town where the crafting quests were and found that I couldn't grow anything I needed because the public plots didn't allow for that,  and you weren't allowed to build because I wasn't a paying player.  Well, its not released, I don't buy crap that isn't released and I sure as fugg don't pay to test as that's just backwards.  So no idea how crafting or any of that works and doubt I will.  There was nothing that hooked me, there was nothing that made me feel like I had to get home to log in, in fact I played a bit on day one and two and then never felt compelled to log in again.

I disagree with the one caption in this article in particular. The writer of this article is a pure representative of someone who wants everything up front without working for it. Players should have something to strive for. And the journey there should also be fun. But the writer here wants it all up front. Instant gratification. I hope the writer is ignored. People like this keep getting what they want and as a result the forums grow more and more miserable.
  • sonictmpsonictmp Member Posts: 5

Questing works and will stay due to the fact it provides not only a short term goal but money, exp, and items as rewards. For the masses who don't have time to sink into an mmorpg, it's important to have those short term goals.

While you're going to have people who enjoy the econ style of mmorpgs or world pvp, you need to make it properly rewarding. You always need to remember that it's a game and progress of some sort means more to a player than the actucal activites. Questing does this best, so it's always going to be the easy go to. Few are going to spend an entire day crating a house that does nothing or a farm that requires you to travel across the contient to sell your product.

You don't need to handhold the player with questing but you do need to push them into the right direction, properly explain other activitis and make sure they give good rewards. Boring questing will push people away as fast as unrewarding or punishing alternatives.

Even after reading the article there are still people saying all they did was quest and will not play again. Im confused.

as an Alpha and Beta player, I can tell you, if you don't intend to buy patron status (sub) and buy a crap ton of labor potions in the game, you may as well not even start. They reduced archeum drops to almost nil, which is required to craft the better equipment. And if you want to do anything but quest or pvp, you'll find yourself sitting around, waiting for your labor points to accumulate, which do so very...very...very slowly. Version 1.2 made EVERYTHING labor dependent. They pretty much killed treasure hunting, as they removed the decent rewards used to find in them, now just junk. not worth the effort.

it's obvious the Koreans do not know how to program a game for western audiences. So now we have the grindfest and cash shop centric game, where prior to 1.2 was actually fun, and people weren't forced into pvp.

Trion tries to make suggestions, but either XL isn't listening, or it gets lost in translation. And TBH, I'm not sure Trion is trying that hard, as I guess they are anticipating the cash shop revenues greatly as much as XL.

Was so looking forward to this game, to where I even paid the $150 fee to get into alpha. Needless to say, I feel Ripped off now. what was once enjoyable, has become Bleh

I am hoping to try the game out for myself still, but this is too bad.  Guild Wars 2 has pretty much spoiled questing for me.

Now is ArcheAge littered with quests or are there just quests scattered through out?

It's littered with quest hubs, and as Bill Murphy said, these quests basically introduce you to the other parts of the game.

It wholly fails though.  DMKano tries to blame the players, which is so ridiculous, it's laughable.

Anet made the same mistake with GW2.  They implemented heart tasks, because they basically said that new players were too stupid to figure things out.  Then when launch came, players, and a certain poster here, were calling GW2 a WoW-clone with quest hubs.  So yes, the developers are at 100% fault, and not the players.

They could've just implemented NPCs in one town, with each one explaining all the different paths to level up.  They didn't though, and instead they went the standard quest-hub route.  They deserve all the scorn for it too.

Definitely a mix crowd of gamers for AA.

I definitely came close to purchasing AA $150, but I didn't. I am glad that Trion at least gave players a chance to try out their new product in it's beta format.

However with the F2P stamp, Korean style graphics and the theme park feel, I am going to back off this one for now. It does look promising, but to me I am personally getting that old feel of Lineage / Aion / FFXIV all over again with this game.

It definitely looks like a fantastic guild game to play, however going to wait this one out and see where it is 6 months from now.

I've been playing the alpha and now the closed beta, and I think you have to do the first levels quests (until level 11, I think) to get the mount, the farm and glider. Or is that a way to get this things without questing? But after that you can ignore the quests, do only the green (story) ones and explore and have fun.

I tried this game during the recent beta weekend, and it was nothing but linear quest hub hopping like the millions of other shitty mmos flooding the market right now. So you say there's a bunch of cool shit in the game once you get past the linear quest hub hopping? Well then Trion or whoever needs to start your character at the level it lets you do all the cool shit. Seriously if the cool shit starts at level 30 then just start our characters at level 30. Delete levels 1 through 29. Not many people want to jump through 29 levels of shitty hoops. We've done it a million times before. If the game isn't really like that anyway then why bother. Just delete that shit.

Get your head out of your asses, idiots at Trion.

I read these "mini ArcheAge reviews" posts where players are giving ArcheAge like 3/10 and just cringe how utterly ignorant they are about the real game that they completely missed.

But the game is NOT for an individual solo quester - ArcheAge is a guild game, a social game at heart - so your average MMO solo player who plays along other players but never actively *with* other players would not really see the real game anyway.

Seems more like the game's problem having itself designed thus.

Been waiting on ArcheAge for 7 years, and after trying it out, i went and tried out Darkfall for the first time.  I'm now happily subscribing to DF, a game that I consider superior in game play and design, even with all it's bugs, problems, and horrible management.

Which I think speaks volumes about ArcheAge.

Plenty of people won't get past the first 5 minutes because of it's schizophrenia design.

For shame really I was so looking forward to getting a sub and living out my days unimpeded by their cash shop.  Oh well, good luck to all you guys that still enjoy it.

I feel the same way. Very disappointing.

Yeah, sure, the game has the depth it has now, but lets see how deep players take the game when access to that depth is blocked by pay-walls.

What pay walls exactly? Labor points and limited plots?

Isnt that enough? It only takes 1 item to break the game.

To say nothing of the fact that I have asked a simple 2 part question many times now and have yet to see it answered.

IsRMT to Gold conversion possible? And How much advantage will having alot of gold early on in the game's release give? (Specifically for establishing guild's power bases not so much for the individual players)
