[Column] Firefall: Red5's Second Shot Nails Its Target

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

I really liked Firefall last year when it went into open beta. But like everyone else, I saw the writing on the wall that Red 5 was having direction issues with the title, and it seemed like their MMO shooter would never quite make it out of the development seesaw it was consistently riding.  Firefall was a game that didn’t seem to know what it wanted to be.

    >  The match-made eSports centric PVP maps are gone. That idea never really worked, and you have to applaud Red5 for having the guts to just cut it completely.

The reason it failed was because Red5 had an ego. There were constant threads about how to improve, balance, and generally fix, the god-awful PvP. Closed beta had a handful of intelligent PvP based players yet all suggestions were ignored and eventually, they had to cut PvP because they'd lost so many people from playing their shitty game. Guts? It wasn't guts. It was necessary. Their PvE side was garbage, their PvP side was garbage, and it simply made sense financially to focus on the PvE side.

Don't give them credit when they don't deserve it. Firefall is a joke and regardless of whether they "patched" it up, it's too far gone and they've already failed their early supporters. Fortunately, MMORPG.com still gets useless articles from Mark Kern explaining how to better a MMORPG... the irony always kills me.

Im not sure nailed it is the right word. Its a fun game now and easy to get into but they gave up on the game they spent the last 3 yeaes on and built this. Its too early to say if that was a good idea or not.

The job board(missions) are so fleshed out with dialogue i find myself talking back to them!!!!!pretty amazing job!!! with character voice overs!!!!- i can even hear a echo of handsome jack(B2)  in some of them!

now the hardmode campaigns have dropped- and this will make it worth while reaching lvl 40 along with titans! and world events!

and ive spent more time in  job boards than battle frame crafting! and after all iam here to explore and play the game right!?

    great job RED5!!!! -

one needs to walk before they can fly all this crap esports and tv station with short films was way too much time spent way from developing the game during its beta stage.

Red5 was way too transparent with their community- and too many sudgestions  from non experienced community who never dev a game clouded the way this game should have gone. and teh game got pulled into too many directions.

Credit should be given to the new RED5 team yes new- becouse many of the distractions from the game are no longer an issue. and Now they are acting like a dev team! much props to them!the finally are serious about delivering a quality mmo.

I've been enjoying it as well.  I enjoyed the earlier versions where you just ran around killing chosen, but it always felt like it lacked something.  There's a lot to do in the game now, and I find myself switching my frame out constantly because i want to be them all lol.
  • 77777777 Member Posts: 41

People use to berate them about constantly changing core systems of the game.  Now they're being praised for changing into a quest-hub level-gated zone game and abandoning their initial gameplay views, just because they finally decide to push this one to "release".

The only thing they nailed were their founders.  To a cross.

    Red5, you disappoint.

I like the idea behind the Job board, but there is just WAY to much running from A to B on some of those.  I kinda wish they were more like Anarchy Online's mission terminals.
  • steelslingasteelslinga Member UncommonPosts: 25

new patch last night removed some features for the moment...and put some mechanics back into play. I've played the game since 2012 and after that patch I feel i'm back doin the same crap that made me quit time after time after new features then they get removed..

I can handle doing 2-3 jobs then i'm off playing another game.. I hope the "launch" goes well and more players jump in and get the game rollin again.

Can't tell if serious or not. The job boards are buggy as hell, the escort missions are terrible. Some missions won't load properly and they make you travel insane amounts of distances for little tiny exp rewards. They removed most of the random encounters, there's barely any ares missions in the open world anymore. The progression is just gated content to every area. You used to be able to do what ever you wanted where ever you wanted if you were skilled. They created 2 extra continents then gated all their content to small grids for lvl ranges. They basically ruined crafting, they took away most of the horizontal progression. Now its basically a lvl 10 frame can do anything a lvl 40 does but the number on the 40 are 16 times higher. You can't really help any of your low lvl friends because of the small zones separating everyone. They took the easy way out and removed most of the uniqueness of firefall and replaced it with generic every other mmo design.

The game is a whole lot better now. You have a lot of pissed off beta vets qq that the game now is for the masses and not just them.  Red5 is a game company that has a great game that will make them money. The game is so much fun to play. Its nice to see that they turned it around.

Founders in games never understand the gamble they are taking.  You need to wait until a game releases to understand what is going on.  I shouldn't complain, I suppose, thanks to Founders I can try a game that is near completion.

Thats what i don't get with founders. I don't believe they are stupid or anything either. You want to surpport an idea of a game ok but its just an idea what it MIGHT be in the long run. So qq because its not what you wanted is silly. So they go all over the internet saying how screwed over they were and the game sucks. But yeah i guess we should thank them for parting with their money. Maybe they shouldn't become founders any more or try to understand a little better what they are giving money too.

Meh, I don't know about that, necessarily. I think that the biggest problem are overly optomistic founders. I've backed many-a-game, including Firefall. I tihnk that you need to get onboard with a game at a higher level when you're funding a game. If you're funding a game for something very specific (like arena PvP) and that's your only stake in the game, then you're eventually going to be let down.

In Firefall's case, it was a let-down. It just felt very..... uninspired. It was empty. Soulless. I just came back to in a couple months back now and it's much improved. It at least seems like it has a purpose now, which makes it much more engaging. I'd love to see the eSports come back in, but no need to rush, either.

Escort missions are fixed now since the latest patch! Lots of bugs fixed too, so now its even better since this review was posted. I hope they have an awesome launch - FF is finally living up to its original potential, and still getting even better!

I'm a founder and have played for 3 years off a $45 buy in. Even if the game ended as a disaster and never launched...I played for 3 years as much as I wanted for the price of a game box I'd normally only play for 15-20 hrs.

The fact that the game is about to launch in a state that I've found a way to enjoy for what it is..or needed to become makes this some of the best money I've spent in game. anyone that feels ripped off by red 5 shouldn't become a founder in any game. Their expectations are waaay too high.

I apologize because I have been way over critical of the game, I am a founder and the game that used to be back at the beginning had so much potential and beauty and joined many of the founders in long battles against the meld, the tornadoes, the bug invasion, dude it was epic.

Then we were left down by the devs who against what is been said here, never listened to our opinion. They basically destroyed the whole game and made a new one. So I hope this one works.

oh im serious- iam enjoying the game.

sounds to me like you come from the Vet beta mentality caravan still lingering around new eden complaining on the forums about the new implementations.

ive been around that time as well but...

sometimes you gotta let go of things that just didnt work for the majority to bring in a new players base, I love the fact they have gone back to basic mmo mechanics.

if it aint broke- dont complicate it. ats what i say... but there will always be room for improvement!

the new team has done an outstanding job delivering content. maybe this game isnt for you anymore. but to bash a new team working hard on making it work and delivering so much at a shorter time that the old red5 team couldnt in 3 years, isnt  fair.

(and yes i do say a new dev team, if youve been around this game long enough , you know as well as i know RED has gone through some many changes internally it has reflected  the outcome of the game itself  during beta.)

as of yesterday they implemented a new patch - fixing many issues you speak of - something we wouldnt see happen a year ago.

uniqueness could come at a later date- they had 3 years todo it, unfortunately not much came out of that...imo.

I will have to check out those new Board Missions because i jumped on my Firecat yesterday and the game felt almost the same it did years ago. With some changes. But i didnt get far from Copa after finishing the new introduction (with my old character). Ill get back to it later today and explore a bit more to see the big changes.

One thing that really pissed me off as soon as i logged in was that my Firecat doesnt have the hovering flame boot skills (forgot the name). And my engineer now has 2 sleeve pants? pfffff, one sleeve pant was true to the original trailer. :( The pants arent a big deal but i want my flame boot skill......

The skill is still in the game it was just moved to an accord assault. So your firecat can equip it you just need to research the assault skill line.

They nailed it? Really?  How can anybody who saw the potential early on, and saw it's demise later say such a thing?

They totally did a 180 because the game concept they were originally selling was a bad check. They talked about features they "had" or were "working on" but when called on it they cited "technical limitations".

Now Firefall is just a been there done that MMO, all  so they can meet a deadline for the new suckers they swindled money from.

This iteration of Firefall is a hawked up booger filled spit in the face of many people, and I honestly feel bad for the creative staff because they probably can't sleep a night due to the "we fucked up... hurry up and make some generic half done bullshit so we can launch" push they're going for.

I'm sorry Bill, this reads like a paid editorial. Get that money though.

I like the game but after last patch i cant play it . Has some serious freezing wich means that in the middle of a fight the game freezes for like 7-15sec which means im dead of course.

This start to happen after about 15-20min of play, reinstalled didnt help, i know a lot of people having similar experiance.

So im gonna w8 out the game until maybe 3-4 weeks after launch to see if its improved.
