Is Archeage the new GW2?

grimalgrimal Member UncommonPosts: 2,935

Now many of us here recall the hype around GW2 where the forum fervor was at an all time high.  I'm reading a lot of stuff being thrown around here on these forums about AA.  How people are playing it wrong.  How it is the old school MMO experience we want.

Are we now reaching Guild Wars 2 hype with Archeage?  Is Archeage the new GW2?

I dont see hype so much as complaining (rightly so) about the freemium model. And the asian grinder quests.

Hype to me would be more like "oh man I cant wait for this, lets discuss every possible feature" Well maybe this does have a hype of some kind just not the same way.

the Hype is its own beast, and it feast on every new mmo then it jumps to its next prey.

I think people are looking for some sort of MMO messiah. The one game that will finally give us what we're looking for, that we can call all our friends in to play and spend a few years again. When enough right or even potentially right notes are hit, we start thinking 'This is it! This is the one!' The hype just skyrockets from there, because if this is THE ONE, why wouldn't you want to share it or defend it as much as you can?

I, myself, got excited for ArcheAge. Overexcited. Largest founder pack excited. Now I find myself looking back and thinking 'Why?' There were a few tweaks I didn't like, sure, but considering the game I played, I still shouldn't have been that excited. But enough things were different that I got hopeful. I don't think it's that ArcheAge is the new Guild Wars 2, or that Guild Wars 2 was even the first 'Guild Wars 2.'

As we see new things, we're going to see excitement for them. Overexcitement. And that's just going to lead to disappointment for many, but a place to stick for at least a few.

Yeah but I'm feeling something different with this title.  ESO was hated from announcement. Wildstar was always in ESO's shadow.

Black Desert would be my messiah type game. Its more of a "please dont **** this up this looks amazing"  I am very hyped over that even with it being a year off.

I'm really wanting that world where you can explore, craft, build things and own territory but Archeage ticked too many negative boxes.

I don't think any game will come close to the GW2 hype that exists at this site. Have to remember that this site is very much pro GW2 even to the point where it allowed the gw2 fanbois to go into other game forums  to troll and trash the games uninhibited.

And when others would do the same in the GW2 forums they were met with bans.

actually AA is not new game and it is a year old game, there are so many youtube videos on its game play already.

that being said,, AA is not really that popular, specially after alpha people  became to know about its so called free to play model and restrictions.

it is also did not do very well in both south korea and russia. it is among average mmos in those countries at best.

but there is always people who get hyped for even little to no reason, hype will be there because of them no matter what (lol)

Asking about whether a game is 'hyped' wrong, or similar to another game is rather pointless.

Hype is generated by the players, even though marketting teams initiate it (which they do just by catering to basic human nature),  and as we've seen countless times it has nothing to do w/ how good the game is or isn't, or how popular it will be. Really, the only way hype actually matters, is if you are incapable of thinking for yourself and forming your own opinions about a game.

This is why it's much more important to form your own opinions. To ignore what 'the masses' hype about, and focus on the right types of questions. What types of features / mechanics a game has. How well they are implemented. How smooth the gameplay is. But most importantly, how closely these match your own personal bias'.

People got excited for GW2, and even now (nearly 3 years later) the game has a boatload of people playing it. Some people got hyped for the wrong reasons, others knew exactly what they were buying, and many people actually were trying to play it like another WoW clone. Any game which has mechanics that are different from the current norm, is going to struggle with this problem if it has popular interest, and also some degree of familiarity to it. Because, whether we realize it or not, most of us try to pigeon-hole games into an assumption we have about what the game 'should' be. An assumption most of us make before we have a single clue as to how the game actually works, or what mechanics are in it. It's part of human nature, and it leads to people having horribly inaccurate first impressions of things. Not just video games.

Nah, it'll be far worse. Guild Wars 2 have Arenanet. Imperfect though they may be, they've got passion and promise.

Archeage has Trion. Incompetent. Passionless. Overrated. Incapable of producing anything that isn't either outright bad or a half-assed clone of something else.

The hype surrounding GW2 was much bigger than it is on AA right now. Both good games though!

Playing: FFXIV, DnL, and World of Warships
    Waiting on: Ashes of Creation

This is partial to all games in an equal amount on this site. Take your pick of any game forum and someone is trashing, ridiculing, taunting members, mocking, and so on.

I have to say that GW2 had a lot more hype to it but can back itself up with what it advertised. No trinity, gear progression, and dynamic events are a huge change.

I don't know enough about the overall game of AA, but what I saw looked pretty much on course with what I have seen before. The chat box reminded me a lot of Tera's with its disgusting dialogue. Easy enough fix to just hide that portion of the game from view though. I'm just worried that the people that are chatting like that are going to be the ones watching my back in PvP. /shrug

edit: I had to throw this in. I don't hate AA and I'm not judging it, in fact I will buy and play it. But what I saw for the short period was about the same as all the others.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

That's some nice delusion you've got there. Mind sharing?

I know basically nothing about Archeage. I tend to stay away from any sort of game development news to avoid getting emotionally invested in an idea; I've been playing these games too long to go down that road any more.

But the game is hogging the Real Time forum watcher like mad.  There are also very clear battle lines drawn in the discussion with the defenders and critics, to put it mildly, going at it hard.  Last time I saw this over a game pre-release was GW2.

I am neither pro nor against Archeage either, I know nothing about it.  But I am very curious to try it.  I'm all for anything that brings more to the table than the typical themepark experience we've all grown accustomed to.

ArcheAge is pretty much an unknown to the general gaming public. Trust me, I've been with both games since their inceptions of being released and NOTHING will reach the mammoth that was the GW2 hype train. Anything less then the GOAT would make anyone happy. I could bring up new games when GW2 was releasing to the general gaming population and most people would have an idea what is it. ArcheAge? I get a resounding "what is that?" outside of certain MMO sites.

That aside, they are two different games. Hardcore PvP vs Casual PvE. I love them both, so I don't care.

Whenever i step outside, somebody claims to see the light
It seems to me that all of us have lost our patience.
    'cause everyone thinks they're right,
And nobody thinks that there just might
Be more than one road to our final destination--

Archeage isn't anywhere near the hype SWTOR and then GW2 had.  The only reason AA is getting any hype is due to it having a few sandboxish features.  I don't blame people for being hyped for something a little different, after 10 years of no sandbox features in the genre.

Cruel, yes, but not unfounded. If one were to take a look at Trion's offerings what would they see:

Rift. A WoW clone. It is distinct only in two features. Rifts were touted and hyped as dynamic content. They are, but they are also distinctly lacking in variety and impact. The Soul System is the game's most praised feature, but it too is nothing more than a worse version of cross-class systems that have already been done. Synergy is often incoherent and there is little effort on their part to make experimentation a thing, so all it really ends up being is a cookie cutter system and, in line with their typical uncreative apathy, they've even got videos up prescribing certain combinations for certain game modes.

To say that Rift has passion would be.... a lie. It's a very small world. It's a very bleak world. There's no culture. There is little lore. There are few standout characters, if any. Cities are almost non-existent, and even capital cities are mind-bogglingly small, unimpressive, and unimaginative.

It is clear from even the most vague look at the title that they did not have any real attachment to the title.

Defiance - the definition of half-assed. Again, its dynamic event system is plagued by an extreme lack of variety. The soundtrack lacks variety; every battle plays the same repetitive, generic, emotionally neutral techno rock song. The story, despite being center-stage in this title as a touted Syfy tv series crossover, is uninspired and underwritten. The voice actors are often passionless. Few of the characters have any real personality - save for rare standouts like Von Bach. It's just a dull, dull presentation of an idea that had a lot of potential.

This time around, they even said "screw it" to the skills system, reducing it to the simplest choice of one active and a few passives possible.

Trove - capitalizing on the popularity of Minecraft and EQ Landmark.

What can I say other than an honest "Trion is a mediocre development studio with no passion and little talent." That assessment seems to hold up remarkably well to their uninspired offerings.

Nope. This is just a niche title and everyone knows it.

Nah. For AA to be the new GW2, it'd actually have to, you know, be good.

    Oooohhhhh! BUUUUURRRRRRRN!!!!!

No, let's get serious here for a minute. The GW2 hype train was massive. The only other MMO with that kind of hype I can think of would have been SWTOR perhaps.

As much as I enjoyed my time in CB2 with AA (reservations about the LP system aside) I don't think its hype is anywhere near that of GW2, at least not overall. My personal hype? I'm pumped for it (again, concerns about the LP system aside), as I LOVE non-combat activities, specifically crafting.

Disregarding the question of hype, AA has something going for it that GW2 doesn't.

AA has PvP. GW2 has some type of instance that resembles PvP.

Any company can release "Dog Shit Online" and we'd all jump for joy at it being the new savior of the MMO market. This is nothing new. In fact, most of the recent MMO releases were "Dog Shit Online" and people still bought it.

Looks ok but the combat in BD looks too much like a console port.  I hate remembering sequences of keystrokes as a combat emulator.  Had fun in the 90's with Mortal Kombat but this is 2014 and I prefer a more realistic combat for Keyboard and Mouse.  One hotkey per ability is plenty for combat.  People bitched about active combat games like Neverwinter or Tera but imagine them when they test combat in BD?

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

I loved the beta, personally and think it'll do pretty decently here, but the crafting, etc is kind of niche.

It's like all these games now. The MMO community will get on it, play it for 3 months, move on to next big thing until a year or two from now when there's a lot more content. If the game is better at that point, the game will change its name and get a re-review on video game sites.

"Hardcore gamers" will complain after 2-3 weeks there's "no endgame" and go back to a PvE raid game (WoW, RIFT, EQ2). PVP as of now is hilariously unbalanced and only world pvp (which is common in KRPGs), but maybe they'll fix that. Pvp players often prop up these games between content patches.

I think it's really like that, especially with wow. We all play the next big game, WIldstar for me, and then when Warlords arrives I play the hell outta it. Then maybe go back to my house in Wildstar, or maybe dtry some new MMo,
