[Preview] Wasteland 2: The Rabbit Hole Goes Deep

Wasteland 2 is all about the gray areas. And that’s how players like it. I recently had the chance to get a preview of the game from inXile’s Brian Fargo, and chatted about consequences, community, and immersion in the upcoming party-based RPG.

Yeh I'm looking forward to this one when it officially launches later this month.  I have been enjoying Divinity:Original Sin as well in the mean time.  Nice little game with minimum hand holding.  It's good to see that in depth RPGs like these are still being made.  Even if they are mainly single player.

Wonder how many people are going to cry when you can buy it on the 31st for $25.

Who would cry when they paid $10 for the kickstarter?

You had to pay $25 from memory to receive a digital copy.

And with all this "Drama" that is happening with the SOE founders packs it would not surprise me if the early access people who were charged $60 were a little upset when the price is lowered..

Those NPC names are a direct callout to the original Wasteland game.  Angela Deth and Snake Vargas were all characters in the pre-generated default party.  Ace was an NPC you could get to join.  So it seems the original party has been "canonized" and Snake Vargas has become General.

I think most people those paid for early access know exactly what to expect. inXile and more importantly Brian Fargo has made it clear several times that the game is going to release for a less price.

I for one donated to the KS at a much higher tier and as DMK said it is some of the best game play and story an RPG fan could ask for.

Donating (read: not investing) to some of these kickstarter titles at least on the RPG side has really allowed for some amazing titles... Just look at Divinity: Original Sin which has been sitting on top of the steam top seller list pretty much since release barring a few good deals from other titles periodically.

The thing with KS games is do your research... learn about the people behind the games... For every good KS there is probably 8 lemons. With W2, D:OS and soon (early access) Pillars of Eternity, along with a few other gems, it is like an RPG buffet out there for all to enjoy.

For the people who have played this, how similar is it to Fallout 2? I don't want to buy it unless I am going to get that same feeling I got from Fallout 1 and 2. I'm talking gameplay when I say "feeling" not necessarily storyline or environment.

How similar is the gameplay to Fallout 1 and 2?

This has been on my wishlist since I saw it on Steam.

And as soon as it goes gold its going to be a permanent part of my Steam library.

WL2 is one of the few gems out there. Can be really harsh sometimes and I really like it. I also like the diversity as we seldom see in games these days (looking at you Blizzard as you lost it some years ago).

Game is painfully tedious, interface is clunky and unreliable, and environment interactibles often don't work or don't react to mouse over depending on camera angle.  It takes a long time to get anywhere even when an area is cleared so that there's literally nothing between point A and B except clicking and waiting.

It's sort of a disappointment.  It's a deeper game than Shadowrun Returns (also a kickstarter), but I would expect more also.  Not nearly as good as Divinity Original Sin, but that game had rage-inducing issues as well.

For anyone with the intelligence , who understands crowd funding the key driver is to support the developers.  Simple really...

Sadly most supporters of Wasteland 2 , understand what they were supporting and got what was expected and more. Great game play and strategy with loads of nostalga heaped all in one , something you just don't see these days in games.

Well put and to the point I for one invest in the fact that i want to see development of games not just another clone , Eternity is looking fantastic, another mention has to go to Elite Dangerous another classic re-emerging that is delivering something special.

I think also those games will be great as you said, but also Torment Tides of Numera (also made by Inxile) and Grimrock 2 (similar to Eye of the Beholder D&D, made by a finish company). :)

Star Citizen is another one but I am not so sure about that game. It's to much hype that it's easy they loose focus or focus on wrong things.

I use to play Wasteland 1 on my old Commodore C64 and loved it. So when I saw Wasteland 2 on Steam I had to buy it. Only complaint is I haven't had the time to play as much as I want.

As far as making wrong choices in the game... I still feel I shouldn't have given those kids the cancer sticks for that one quest.

On topic, game looks great. i loved the old Fallout series and this looks like the spiritual successor. I can't wait until it comes out later this month.
