That's what some posts here are saying. "This game is great", "I love this game", etc. What? Are we playing the same game?
I am NOT trying to troll, but man, some people are easily impressed.
This game is exactly like almost all other Asian MMO's. One person said the story was great. Really? I couldn't find much that I was interested about nor could I connect my character to it. The very first cut scene was cool, but I had no idea what was going on, nor did it even have a voice over to let me know what I was watching.
The game play is the same as almost all other Asian MMOs. Each area, for the first 10 levels or so (I gave up at level 10 out of boredom), are exactly the same. There are *only* 2 mobs that endlessly spawn that just hang around the npcs. The quests are mindless, not even remotely interesting, difficult, or engaging. I didn't even stand reading them because they were so simple and uncreative that I didn't care.
You walk 10-20 feet, then kill 5 mobs, then walk back 10-20 feet to the npc and get almost the same reward. How fun!! Then, you are immediately sent to the next area where you do exactly the same thing, which literally just has 2 mob types that again, just stand around all clumped together, endlessly spawning. There are only 2-3 quests in each of the first 5 areas.
How can people stand it? There's no rhyme or reason why these mobs would even be there, nor have 0 roaming, AI, etc. They are confined to this invisible circle. You kill a few then move on. There's NO danger at all and the game, at least early on, is total EZ mode. I didn't even use a health or mana potion for 10 levels.
So many reviews here/first impressions never look at a game critically. The narrator said this game was a sandbox and I didn't see that at all. They seem to just pander to the developers, like they are getting paid to give them favorable reviews.
So, sandbox eh?. All I say saw was a very linear and boring progression. In 30 mins, I bounced from 5 different areas, which I was directed to. Sure, you can move off *a little* from these area, but that's all. You're not going to find anything "out there", at least not early on. They even spoon feed you with quest direction markers on the ground to make this game even less challenging, if the terribly simple and mindless quests weren't enough.
As far as the expanded crafting, housing, and pvp (I hear), I couldn't find much interest to stay in the game to get to those. The base-level game was just too unimaginative, un-engaging, etc. Talk about ZERO innovation from Asian games. Ouch.
Like another guy said... "this game is....meh". I agree. Pretty graphics don't help the standard formula used in this game.

it depends on what games you have played prior to this.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Please do not respond to me
This is one reason I passed on the beta.
1-50 is the same as any other quest grinder MMO. The only way to know if the game is good is to let the community develop and see if it sucks then.
I love the game.
But ya the linear boring progression part is linear and boring.
If you want a good linear storyline quester type of game though its true there are much better MMORPGs out there.
I personally don't really care what the level up experience is in a game as long as its fast and the game is worth it once that part is over. If you want a game that levels up well I suggest ESO. You can run quests for months in that game and they can be fun if you're into that sort of content.
WOW is a good one too. Lots of fun linear quest content.
What we're seeing now is not what we'll be seeing 4-6 weeks after launch. Right now, they have STRONG support of people who really believe in the game and have put lot's of time, money or both into it. Now just wait 4-6 weeks after then go look. It's been proven that a game that depends on having a strong community to get things done isn't for our younger generations. Just look at WildStar as a example. I may be wrong, but I don't think so. I 'll get back to ya 4-6 weeks after launch, then we can talk about it.
Maybe even play it !
In response to the title question, pick one (or many) of the following:
I guess its like all other games, some people love it, some people hate it.
I think we are moving out of a age where the mainstream used to control peoples minds, creating a common idea of what was good and what was bad, we are now at a stage where we have understood that reviews suck and the only way to tell if you like something is to try it yourself.
Some people love skiing, others do snowboard, some go skateboarding others surfing, just cause its a MMO does not mean we all agree on what features are important, what we need to learn, is that negative opinions about stuff really has no value.
Instead try to focus on the positive parts of a experience, and if detailed enough it might get more people interested, unless of course they are looking for other features, there really is no need to compete about what is wrong and what is right, and what is left.
I mean look at IMDB or sites like it, some people vote 1 or 10 because they want to change the overall score, instead of giving the movie the score they really thought fit, because somehow everyone thinks their own unique opinion is the right one.
So stop thinking you have all the answers, admit that people are different, and that some people like to eat meat and some only eat fruit.

Care to explain your reasoning?
how many more post you going to make claiming the exact same thing as the ones you keep making... if you dont like it then bounce son.. see ya.. the ones that enjoy archeage for what it is wont be missing ya
When ever you see " I am not trying to troll" in any sentence then you know right then and there they are trolling regardless of effort in doing so.
Most every game is fun to different people for different reasons, I think GW2 is crap but some think its fun so then it is....to them and it is....to me.
The best way to deal with products that a person might be interested in is to take the opinion from the people you know, not randoms from the internet.
This is by far the best game I have ever played since LOTRO. I got to level 13 and I told myself, stop now. Keep some of it a surprise.
Edit: As to how I can think this is simple. When I log in and start to run around and hit stuff, I get a warm feeling inside.
i will laught at everyone who saying this game suck 1 month later, since right now everyone just played the beta.. they really dont know the standard of this game when it goes live.
Since i got a few things to Point out (i have tried the RU version and also the asian version), since both of those actually did flopp, reason is pretty easy this game requires to much time consume then you actually want too play, since Everything requires you to farm people start botting, both RU and asian version is actually made of bots, its like zero players, only running bots to farm materials.
The game is also pay2win, you will see once the game goes live, its to hard for the whiteknights to Believe such a thing since its a game they "like", but you will realise once game goes live.
well guys, my Point is no reason to say a game is "awesome" Before it being proven it awesome, since its beta stage and so much can be changed by then (also want to add the EU/US version right now starting to get overcrowded with bots, since they trying their Tools it seem for the "release" of the game)
ya hardly played the game and you're whining about the themepark aspects not being themepark-y enough, and thats why you were uninspired to try sandbox aspects of the game. You are an idiot and an example of the large amount of flakes in this genre who judge a book by its cover! GG
OP, you have a negative attitude in life. You feel you need to point out you are an aethiest under your name is a key to showing me why you are mad and want to point out bad in everything.
You played AA to lvl 10.... and you think you know all about the game, you only get to a few starting areas and dont even have a built character yet at all at that level to experience the combat how it will be later on in the game.
You have not done any PVP at that level, have not built ships, sailed around, built a house, farm, nothing, you did none of the Sandbox stuff and experienced none of the games main features, yet you think you knwo all about it to post all this nonsense in multiple threads.
I think the game is GOOD, not the best ever, but for free, its a hell of a game!
GAME TIL YOU DIE!!!!
no one would take you seriously as not trolling if you post two almost identical post in a short amount of time.
If you are looking for a game with story yes there are better mmos out there , TESO , TSW and Lotro spring to mind . The questing is pretty much standard fair in Archeage but the same is true of most fantasy mmos so to suggest its any more grindy than say a game like WoW in terms of questing is wrong because at heart WoW offers the standard kills this , find that ,escort this style quests . The only games that get away from that formula to my knowledge are TSW and EvE .
What Archeage does is take the traditional mmo formula and elevates it to the next level . To me this is the next generation mmo and the new benchmark in mmo quality . I can only liken the feeling I get from it to that which I got in Vanilla WoW but its so much more even than WoW was even then . There is no other game out there to match it to at the moment in a fantasy setting .
In the other games I'm playing I'm noticing word is spreading like wildfire about the decent quality of Archeage . I'm actually starting to wonder whether it could be a lot lot bigger than the 1-2 million people that I had forecast a few months ago .
Quite simply it is the best mmo I have seen in ten years and maybe the best mmo I have ever seen . ( even better than Vanilla WoW )
I personally agree with the OP. However I understand that AA starts in a tutorial zone and it does open up, however I could not get past level 6 without just quitting. I love the atmosphere and the design, I HATE the poor combat mechanics. No, not the point and click on some hotbar buttons, I don't mind that. It's the mob tagging. WORST fricking feature in an MMO in this day and age ever! Tagging a mob away from other and waiting around for respawns is fricking retarded. I may be spoiled on Rift where everybody can get create as long as you do something to it, but in AA you literally can do 99% of the damage to a mob, but as long as somebody tagged it before you it doesn't matter. Also I personally do not like sending group invites and trying to team with every person I see on ever quest zone area just because of this system. I enjoy my own pace and not running around with strangers. But if I am getting mob blocked and wasting PvE playtime running to the next mob that's not being engaged, then I am not enjoying my experience.
Labor system....hate it. I literally just wanted to run around and harvest nodes and make stuff.....tough shit in AA. AA looked like you could have some fun and success out of not doing any PvE and just crafting....not with a Labor system. To many things required it. Hell, I needed labor points to open a loot chest to get a piece of gear. I needed labor points to harvest a node. I needed labor points to make anything. That's as far as I got before I felt like this was not for me, personally. Many can debate why this system is there and the benefits, but for a casual player it's a real turn off.
I'm not 100% sold or turned off by AA. Like stated give it 4-6 weeks after launch to see what's up. But as it is not my initial experience was very bored.

I think AA is great. The attention to detail in the various animations, the incredible graphics, the seemingly endless depth in available gameplay... the list goes on but those are enough to move it past every other game out right now for me.
Can't wait for launch.

The OP made a quick judgement on the game based upon what is essentially the tutorial first 10 levels. Heck, there isn't even a "death penalty" until you reach level 10. And yes, the areas (at least that I played) are pretty much the same UP TO level 10. Beyond that I found a good amount of variation. So I think his assesment is flawed simply because he did not go very far. Take it to level 20 or 30 and then come back and say something more useful. And by the way, there ARE voice overs in the cutscenes. First beta I played they were all in Korean but they have since been localised.
With that said, I will agree that some of the things he found in game are pretty much traditional MMO fare. NPC are usually grouped in an area and mill around with little ryhme or reason for doing so. There are a very few instances were they might appear to be guarding something but it is still just the NPC standing around. Not sure why developers have not come up with a better system...say having an enemy patrol an area or actually guarding a camp or item...but that is another discussion.
The only part of the game that bothers me since I am not playing as a "founder/patron" but rather as a f2p player would see the game is that you can become severly gimped if you do not find a group to play with many times. This can also effect things such as farming/crafting if you do not belong to a guild...is that possible on f2p side?
I have had fun leveling one character up to level 27 solo. But the progression really has slowed down since about level 20. I have also leveled grouped to level 13 and that has been fun. If my group of friends (our gaming guild) would play this game I would become a patron in a minute. However, they have shown little to no interest (more interested in Wildstar and WoW atm...I don't like either of those) so I doubt I will NOT play it for that reason alone.
Let's party like it is 1863!
I will agree there is not 1 thing I can say I hate about the visual display AA shows off. The animation and attention to detail are great. So many things to click on and do make the game fun and interactive (shutters, lights, chairs to interact with). Not to mention good ol Asian giggle physics.
