End of this year or early 2007 I think. It's in beta now.

So far all one can do is guess.
I predict late 2006. I think microsoft want this released badly. With the longest "dead" period of windows systems since early 90's the market has been ready for years.

Everyone can get it. Pirated versions have been out for ages.

I must say, I'm rather ignorant on the pros & cons of this new "Windows Vista". But the hype seems to be rather large and building.

Can anyone sum up what exactly will be "special" about this new version?

Windows Vista is mostly a "rewrite" from xp. As for what I understand, the advancement is comparable with 98-2000/xp: Security, Interface and uptodate drivers.

Currently MS Vista is slated for final Rev. for late 3rd quarter of 2006 and official Release sometime time late 4th quarter, most likely with a push to 1st quarter 2007.

As it stands now, Vista is in internal testing on Beta 2, currently Beta1 4.2 and 4.5 are available for general download with access.

You can find out all about the general details here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/default.aspx

Probably the most accurate beta news is found here:

    http://www.betanews.com/

MS has a public download of a few rev's on the corporate site, unfortunately I don't have the link with me right now, I'll edit and post the link later this aft.

I've been testing Vista through... 3 iterations I think now and it's actuallly not bad. The performance issues are a big problem, you need a significant system to run it with lots of the bell's and whistles but that being said... it's pretty neat.

It's certainly very pretty to use with lots of little graphical toys, the search system is very neat and works well, multiple panning windows to go through your filesystem is probably about the coolest thing ever, network connections is a dramaticly improved for the common user and connectivity all around is a nice change with things like desktop rss feeds, mini internet projection boxes.

There's also alot of things that aren't supposed to be talked about because there is a "sort" of NDA attached with the Beta but most of the good stuff can't be downloaded by people like myself and everything I get to see is very common knowledge and at this point and is press released. Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing what the end result will be, should be fun.

I also hear that MS is going to some lengths to make Vista very gamer friendly. How they are going to do this im not sure but thats what ive heard.

With vista will be many new gaming opertunities. Vista will be 64bit, and there are almost no 32bit processer that will work, but there are a few. With vista will also be Direct X 10. This will include many many new things and you are going to have to buy a new video card that will support it all. Also, more ram will be needed, and 1gig will be "recommended" instead of high end.
New CPU sockets like socket m2 will come out, on mobo's that support DDR2 for AMD processers. Basically you are going to have to upgrade like crazy. More ram, a brand spanking new video card that can support DX10 and if you dont have one, a 64bit processer.
If all you need is a new video card, do it. But if you need all the other stuff too, just wait for socket m2 and buy a mobo for that and a CPU and ram for that, and THEN a new video card.

    yay I cant wait! (sarcasm)

thankyou, i couldnt possibly live without that valuable info.

arent they supposte to attempt to stop internet piracy with this version? i know i heard this somewhere, and dont worry about the upgrade part that sackynut stated since 64 bit processors arent that popular yet they will come out with a 32 bit version too, atleast i think becouse it would just be stupid to release only a 64 bit version when only a few people that would like to upgrade have a 64 bit processor and plus to get the full potential of 64 bit you need 4 gigs of ram which is pretty rare for people to have now and costs alot.

and i didnt get that video that jaguar posted, what are they trying to say that apple has already had features that vista is suposte to have so in a way they are copying mac's?

i trued a pirated version of vista but couldnt get it to work, im going to try to get a different one and ill post my experience with it here IF i can get it and get it to work.
