Sport (or sports) is all forms of usually competitive physical activity.
Electronic sports (or esports) is a term for organized video game competitions.
Thats why one is called esports and the other one sports. Two different things, end of story.
Pretty much.

So I guess the "e" versions of those are sports too. If so I've won the Masters in golf for several years now.
All sports are competitive, not all competitions are sports, at least not in the modern world. Words change and evolve. eSports are not sports. Notice the difference in your examples? They're all physically competitive activities in the real world. eSports is its own real thing, but it's not reality. The reality is they're competing in video games. The virtual "e" reality is whatever that environment is.
Well, if we want to really be picky, then video games are also physical, if not more physical than some of those. Shooting, for instance, requires little or no physical activity.
I'm fine with the differentiation between eSports and Sports. I would have absolutely no qualm with that, other than every single time this conversation comes up, people seem to think that there is no difference between what these people are doing and what they are doing on their couch at home and, if only they had 12 hours a day to just sit and play it, they could be the best at it too. That's just entirely crap. I love the football example give here too. It's like saying that if you had 12 hours a day, you could easily play in the NFL. Unfortunately, it trivializes whatever sets the high-end games apart from others. It might be more neurological than physical, I can accept that. What I can't accept is that you could be just as good given the right time to practice.
Ever shot a gun at a moving target or even a stationary target? it takes a whole hell of a lot more physical exertion and precision than moving a mouse around does.
Only a sport like this would think that a game is/could be a sport.
Have fun with that. I wish I was a linebacker that could make a hit on them while they sit like coddled like infants at their PCs/Consoles....
Ok...wish I was an Olympic skeet shooter that could shoot you being a linebacker hitting someone on the couch....
Skeet shooter huh?
I wish when they talked about sport, they meant actual physical activity. That hard for you to understand? It isn't a sport just because there's competition.

I wish people would stop thinking they do need physical activity.
Originally posted by Russ915 Don't need to brong handicapped people into this. Your point about physical sports applies to esports. If you take soccer for example its relatively free to play but people watch it because they enjoy watching the best of the best play at a highly competitive level. A level that the average person could never compete.
the difference is anyone can be the as good as the best of the best when it comes to esports but when it comes to physical sports not very many can be as good as Michael Jordan no matter how much they play basketball. Video games dont require any natural talent to be the best at them but physical sports does.
They are not real sports. People watch sports because they don't have the physical skills to do what the athletes can do. Anyone can pick up a game and play it. Even handicapped people have the tools to play them. What is the point of watching esports when most of us would much rather play the game ourselves.
That's a really skewed statement.
There are people who watch sports who play sports to varying degree of excellence. Some not good and some good. They might not be pro. Then again, what's to stop "pros" from watching sports?
And not everyone can pick up a game and play. Especially if they have a handicap and their handicap prevents them from doing so. Which there are quite a few ailments that would prevent a person from doing so.
And yet, even if someone can pick up a game I bet there are going to be people who excel at different levels.
Otherwise, what you are saying, is that if a person can pick up a game they can play at the same level as everyone else. And if you are saying that then we have a whole forum here that might argue that there are people who play at different levels.
Also, there are people who like watching others play video games but don't like to play them. That might be hard to believe but it's pretty true.
Anywhere someone can excel at something that others cannot is a place where you will find people who are curious to watch their skill.

To classify this as a sport is a spit in the face to real athletes. Those real athletes who endure a life time of hard work, exercise, conditioning, and nutritional regimes that few would ever have the willpower to last through. I played football throughout my schooling. I got scouted to a division one college on football scholarship. I played until I blew out my knee, at which point I left school to change my career path. The amount of work I had to put into just where I got was mind boggling. I don't know how I did it. And to be 100% honest, I would had never made it into the NFL even if I had I not had an injury and I have no problem admitting that. Yet to compare the level of dedication and work that goes into what a true pinnacle level athlete does, to some dude sitting on a couch snacking on doritos and with greasy fingers playing LoL, well its just LOL in a different kind of way. The guys in these COMPETITIONS are good, they're better than I could ever be at it, and they're also better than I could ever care to be. They are great and it is skillful in some ways. But no one goes to bed at night dreaming about being an "esport champion" lol. They go to bed dreaming about winning the world cup, or the olympics or the superbowl etc. Why? Because those are true sports that require the pinnacle of human perfection. Not something any fat slob sitting in their recliner is doing on a daily and nightly basis.

Here is the training schedule of one of the pro players of DOTA 2 who was in a Chinese Dota 2 team (they take this shit extremely seriously there).
And remember, when they play games in this schedule, they can't goof off 24/7 on it. They learn every intricate mechanism of a Hero/Champion and the thousands of interactions Dota 2 has between Heroes and Items which can provide an advantage. They study other teams' playstyle, their early game movements from previous games, their warding styles and a whole of other shit. Don't think they are casually playing the game like the rest of us and that this schedule is remotely similar to what other gamers do.
The difficulty is strange to compare, but I can say this with a certain degree of certainty.
Any person can pick up these games and be 'pro' if they put in the hours that these people do.
On the flip side, there is a huge amount of people that will never, ever be 'pro' in a real sport no matter how much time they put into it.
There is something false about calling something a 'sport' when anyone can do it. It feels cheap and misguided. 90% of the population of people can pick up a game, play it 10+ hours a day and become pro. Only 10% (or less), can start playing a 'sport' and actually have what it takes (No matter how much they put into it), to be considered 'pro'.

Here is one of the more popular shooting sports in the world, I'd say there is plenty of physical activity:
Don't take it the wrong way, but that's a prime example you gave of not knowing what you were talking about. I'd say the people who shoot IPSC/USPSA/IDPA all engage in plenty of physical activity, standing plinking at a target does not.
Is LoL a sport? I'm not one to judge, but I will say there is more to it than I thought before.
Don't tell me "anyone can do that". E-sports are just as dependent on physical aspects of the body as athletics, they just focus on other and more minute parts such as precision hand-eye coordination and fast reflexes while also requiring a high degree of mental stamina and multitasking capability. Failing any point will make you unable to reach that world championship, so stop spouting that gripeful shit.
it's a competition, we call it an e-sport, and as long as it exists within the confines of reality, it is real - these things are not dreamt-up stuff in a fantasy book, it's a game controlled by a certain set of rules played inside a kausal reality. while the games characters are not real in a sense that they can affect a change in the world, they are as real as a checker-piece or a football, all consisting of real physical components - where a checker-piece is made of wood, plastic or stone though, the game is made of information stored on physical drives - it is destructible, like a checkers-piece or a football.
i'd say checkers being greenlighted as a sport by the olympics committe pretty much sets the bar for sports. i'd say a sport is a competition of skill in any certain area, but honestly, i don't care if you call it a competition or a sport, 'cause E-Sport is something different yet, hence the different name.
Grooling? I think someone doing construction 12 hours a day, breaking concrete, digging ditches and such would probably not think so.
People always try to make it look like they are killing themselves also, so I take these things with a grain of salt, my boss would make you think she works 20 hours a day, with all these grooling emails she tends to on her phone at home.

Just an FYI, DOTA 2 did it first, the following 3 players' life thing and their rise to be a professional e-sports player.

Ofc its a sport. The champions in the game had some good exercises.
seriously, i could not care less its a sport or not. lol

now can we stop obsessing over this?
So in other words:
11 AM - goof off on internet.
Noon - Eat
12:30 - 5:30 Play and watch video games.
5:30 Shoot some ball or play video games longer.
6:30 Eat
7:00 - 11:00 PM Play video games
11:00 PM - Eat
11:30 - 4/5 AM - Watch videos and play games.
Dedicated? Yes.
