Maybe this will remove some, or preferably, all of the FPS crowd who have migrated to MMORPGs demanding that they play like FPS games. Wishful thinking I know, but we can hope.
Those are some really impressive numbers. I'm not really into first person shooters myself, but if it's as polished and plays as smoothly as they say it does, I'm sure the audience for that kind of game wll appreciate the game.
Paying for their development on day one of launch is something that very few game can pull off.

Nah, WoW has ensured that there will always be an MMO. People see the money Blizzard has made off that game and dream to reach it.
It's in first place of the Most money made by a video game by a landslide. 2nd place is like $2 billion. WoW made more than that in 2009 alone
How much did WoW make when it was first released
Not too much, they only had like 700k subscribers in the first year, but it only costed about $60 million. Destiny costed $500 million, it should do better initial for that much lol.
I don't see what all the hype is about. Borderlands 2 is more fun. The one thing Destiny does have though is the graphics. They are very good looking. As for gameplay though, I like Firefall or Borderlands 2 for that.

Not really, because MMORPG developers will just continue to chase after them.
Pretty much expected. Halo was xbox alone and had numbers approaching this. The entire Halo fanbase will be on top of this game too and it also is releasing on more platforms.
No surprise. No shock. This is expected averages.
This is not an mmo. If it were it would sell less because the core game play would be too watered down to attract the audience it is targeting.

Not true at all.
Bungie got funding approval from Activision 2 and half years ago. So not hard to figure out then how long they worked on the actual production of the game.
For that amount of time, it´s impressive what they have delivered.
But people just like to complain, talk eachother down into depressesion and are no longer able to see the positives in a game. Just the negatives.
I mean....Last night I was roaming around in Old Russia map again and suddenly a big enemy drop ship jumped out of Warp right on top of me. Dropped cluster grenades on my ass, making me jump in my chair, scramble and run for cover!
Then the ship released drones and enemies jumped out of the drop ship above me, sailing down steel cables.
I mean..... how friggin´cool is that? Instead of the usual boring spawning of mobs out of tin air on same position over and over, we still see in MMO´s today.
It´s just all those details that make Destiny an incredibly fun game. Bungie took a lot of attention on details and put a lot of effort in it.
But again.... People are just unwilling to see it, just focus on the negatives and whine. And that´s all these People will do the rest of their lives, as they will never find a game that meet their unrealstic expectations.
Originally posted by Gregor999 I have no doubt this game will sell. Unfortunatly I don't see this obvious Borderlands ripoff lasting more then a month or two. To even call this game an MMORPG is a gross exaggeration.
No one ever said it was.
Not that I disagree, but .......whatttt??? I believe a few people here are of that belief or we would not be talking about it.
The argument was largely over whether it could be considered an MMO game at all which is made problematic by the fact that even among folks who would agree on excluding League of Legends, World of Tanks, Diablo 3 &c. from that category there is no consensus on a cut off point for a game being "massively multiplayer" or not (and I've not been following Destiny closely enough to have an opinion on whether it fits my own eccentric definition or not).
The publishers preferred not to call it an MMO probably on the basis that a significant or at least vocal section of their target market (console shooter players) have similar opinions about "MMOs" and their players to those we frequently see expressed here on the subject of console shooters and their players.
Also as has been pointed out the figure quoted is copies shipped to retailers, & there is no guarantee these will all sell. This game is being sold in supermarkets that don't normally carry console games, for instance.

Great, its really good that it happened and that you enjoyed it, but it is nothing new, Tabula Rasa had that too, and look how that ended.

Ding Ding, we have a winner.
A creative person is motivated by the desire to achieve, not the desire to beat others.
I own Destiny on my PS4 and its a gorgeous game but the "huge" success of Destiny is more or less grounded on the fact that there are no other "good" game (or the lack of it) for next gen consoles, right now.
No doubt Destiny would have been a success on any circumstances but this huge success is surprising, IMO.
I like some pew pew once in a while too. But this is like everyone going Lady Gaga over the latest generic themepark MMO making 500 million in one day.
We've got plenty of generic themeparks. Destiny and Borderlands are the only solid, big-budget co-op shooters with RP elements on consoles, with Borderlands not available on current-gen consoles. So no, the situation is nothing alike.
Of course, they didn't exactly make those 500 million in one day, either, but there are good reasons for Destiny's popularity. In addition to it probably being a good game.
It probably did make a lot of money with all them pre-orders.
The issue I usually have with all those millions thrown around (both in terms of cost and profits) is that you never really know how much a game actually costs or makes.
I mean: look at your own income. You have taxes to pay, money to save, loans to pay,...
From that $500 million, what is the cost involved? How much flows back into the further development of the product or the pockets of the investors?

No, 10 years is how long they plan for the franchise to succeed http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2013-06/18/destinys-destiny
They started development of Destiny 5 years ago

PR mambo-jumbo that is there in order to fuel sales.
They have not sold 500$ mln games yet. Delivered = not sold.
Nothing to talk about.
