You can buy it and play it without spending any additional money. You can buy gems for the store from other players on the in-game exchange if you ever want any of the cosmetics, or the Living Story season 2 quests that you've missed. (which were free unlocks as long as you logged on during that time)

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

Guild Wars 2 is a pretty good game for someone who only plays an hour a day. You will have a lot of content to do taking it that slow, plus you can always PvP and be at equal level in WvW if you just feel like PvP'ing.

I think it is worth it for 25 dollars if you know what you are getting into.

This is a game with a ton of content, but a bit of an identity problem.

Hardcore PvE raiding is absent, WvW has been mishandled terribly.  You can get into PvP if you want, but there is not a large community for that despite ANet's attempts to make it more popular.  The storyline quests of the game are still bug riddled, and living story has been disappointing.  It is clear that ANet has not been hiring writers.

I would say avoid this if you are looking for a raiding game, an immersive world, or any kind of PvP.

Now that the negatives are done, lets talk about what this game gets right:

There is a TON of content to see - it is just in a more casual form.

The events are the best aspect of GW2, giving you different objectives to work on in the same area.

You are  rewarded for exploring with achievements, items, and money.  Exploring in GW2 I would say is head and shoulders above any other MMORPG ever.

Combat is active - you will not find yourself doing spell rotations (however you may make a character build that doesn't require much more than spamming an ability or two).

The talents are well done - I think it would be safe to say that I enjoyed this talent system more than any other.  You get stats, preset abilities, and abilities of your choosing with talents.  It lets you come up with lots of viable builds.

The graphics are lovely with an impressive art style - if this is high on your list GW2 will not disappoint.

Anyways to wrap it all up, GW2 goes for $25 fairly frequently, and if you are intending to play it casually you will have a lot of fun and been entertained for a long time to come.  I think this game really excels for a more casual player, and that most of its problems only become issues when you try to play it with a lot of dedication (whether it be poor design by ANet, lack of players, or content not existing for that play style).

Playing this game is not about getting lost in a fantasy world, elaborate raid dances to get through bosses, or top tier PvP.  It is about enjoying the combat, testing out different builds to find more optimal and enjoyable ones, trying to get 100% on every zone, and having lots of opportunities to play alongside other players easily without worrying about communication.  In GW2, rather than rushing to the end to get gear, the most fun is to be had on the journey itself.  The combat is rock solid, and when playing it one way gets old you can change your talents, skills, and weapons quickly and easily.  You will run into events to do literally everywhere, just constantly happening.  You get to play with other people without dealing with finding a raid group.  Certainly you will still run into the flaws of the game, but when you do just remember: you only paid 25 bucks for it.

Edit: and to answer your question clearly, this game has no monthly fee.

Edit2:  and it is only fair that I should warn you that both myself and everyone I knew that played ended up quitting and being very frustrated with the company making the game - they really seem to have lost the vision they once had, and spend a lot of time focusing on or developing things that it seems nobody wanted.  I think that the core experience for a casual player can still escape their meddling with their own game, though.

So 31 hours a month of entertainment doesn't justify $15 a month?  That's less than 50 cents per hour of entertainment, not a bad buy by any means.

With that said, GW2 is an awesome game for the price, you pay $50 and get an entire game that will last you easily a few months at an hour a day. However, I go back to the fact that lets just say you get GW2 play for 3 months at an hour a day before you tire of the game.  That's roughly $16.66 a month worth of game, now lets say you play WoW for 3 months @ $15 a month but only play 1 hour per day, as you can see it all kind of works out to the same.

So my honest advice would be, if you are tired of WoW and want to try something new, GW2 is a great choice.  With that said, it's six of one a half of dozen of the other.  All games will roughly cost you about $15 a month no matter how you slice and dice it.

You should get it simply because it is very cheap.  30$ when on sale, 50$ when not.

It does have a cashshop, but they are less pushy then the other cash shop games.

About NA or EU version, you can look here: https://www.facebook.com/GuildWars2/posts/425415807474699

I dont know if they have found a solution for those who travel between regions.

I can highly recommend buying the game. I have often myself only played for 1 hour or less per day.

The game is well worth the money. But you have to embrace the game for what it is.

It's a single player interactive movie experience with optional grouping.

For the time you have available to you, I'd definitely recommend it.  It's a casual player's dream.  There is no rush to get to endgame, and plenty to do on the way to level cap.  One of the better-created game worlds to explore as well.  It wasn't my cup of tea, but I'd definitely recommend it to any casual player as I think it's worth the price for those that can't invest a ton of time in an MMO.  And yes, once you buy the game, you won't have to spend a dime to enjoy it from then on.

GW2 is just a straight up solid mmorpg.  You can get bored with it sometimes but it's a one time fee for a massive amount of content for as long as the game lasts.  I find myself playing it for a month or so and then getting kinda burnt out so I'll hop to another game for awhile yet I always end up back on GW2 because it's always there and paid for.

I just bought the game.  Have been playing for 2 days and I have to agree with Ludwik's statement entirely!

GW2 was not what I thought it would be.  I played FFXIV before GW2 because I once loved FFXI and had hoped for something like an FFXI improved.  But besides the added male cat race I didn't like FFXIV - it felt small.  GW2 feels more like a follow up to FFXI.  It's big (esp if you promise yourself not to teleport).  Something about it seems more relaxing and not nerve racking.  Of course, I'm a Sylvari so maybe it's my race that's laid back?  I am happy with GW2 but I love cutsceney type games.

GW2 plays good on my old Windows Vista and it is rare to find a newer game for an old PC these days.

As a person whose played gw2 since day one I can tell you with great confidence that gw2 is well worth the price of admission, especially for a causal player because, I too am also a causal player. There are 4 different game modes in gw2 that you should be aware of followed by tons of other sub game modes:

    Main game modes:

    Open world PVE:
    Map completion
    Dynamic events
    Mini Dungeons
    Guild events:
              Guild Puzzles
              Guild missions
              Guild bounties
              Guild treks
    Jumping puzzles
    World bosses
    Achievement hunting
    And more

    Dungeons:
    Story mode dungeons
    Exploreable dungeons
    Fractal dungeons

    Arena PVP:
    Hot join pvp
    Tournament pvp
    Custom arena
                2v2, 3v3, 1v1

    World vs World vs World:
    Solo roaming
Havoc squads (Small groups of players that attack keeps and capture points. Or distracts zergs while the main zerg takes over keeps with much smaller resistance)
    Zerg battles
    Map completion
Organized Guild vs Guild team death matches
Obsidian Sanctum (open world pvp jumping puzzle)
World vs world vs world seasonal tournaments

    Sub game modes:
    Mini games
    Crafting
Living world content every two weeks
    Dailies and monthlies
    Achievement hunting
    And soo much more

I personally stick to dungeons and arena pvp the most. But as you can tell guild wars 2 is a fantastic game for the one time price they give you. And obviously if you’ve played gw1 you would know there are tons of things they have yet to add to the game like the two other continents Cantha and Elona for example. Cantha has closed off its boarders to the rest of the world while they try to solve their own problems, while Elona has gone silent due to an ancient evil who supposedly can’t be killed. I also suggest looking at the video I just posted. It’s a bit long but its great for introducing new players to the game:

For a casual player, you'll have a very hard time finding anything even close to GW2 let alone better. Tastes can differ, but it's really good.

You will play it and get bored of it in less than a week. Save your money. Archeage releases on 9/16.
  • sketocafesketocafe Member UncommonPosts: 950
You'll have people tell you to buy it because of all the ways it is good, but let me speak for those who never bought GW2. I haven't bought it and this has worked out pretty well for me so far. I've tried it during a trial weekend, and let me tell you, I would have been disappointed had I spent money on this game. You're not missing much as someone who doesn't own GW2, at least not so much you can't wait for another trial.

If what what the OP enjoy is leveling and moving around the world, at 1 hour per day, you will have many months in front of you.

    Currently playing: GW2
Going cardboard starter kit: Ticket to ride, Pandemic, Carcassonne, Dominion, 7 Wonders

  • AlbatroesAlbatroes Member LegendaryPosts: 7,671
OP, you should just buy it. One time payment and play it whenever you have the time.

Yup go for it if you are genuinely looking for a game that offers challenge and fun in a relaxed gorgeous MMO. If you still hanker for the x*ilevel increase in power every week and being able to drastically out gear people in pvp I would avoid it.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

This now turns out to be hilarious advice.  You only have 1 hour a day to play but it takes 5+ hours to log into Archeage, so give it a miss and stick to GW2.
