The Final Fantasy XIV forum has been updated with the digest version from the latest Letter from the Producer LIVE that took place earlier this month. Among other things, Yoshi-P answered questions regarding time consuming systems, whether or not more information is ready to be revealed about a new race and if there are plans for more cross-game collaboration events.
Q: Is there anything you can tell us about the expansion?
A: Well, we've finalized the title and the art is coming along nicely. The team has created mock-ups of the fields using rough polygons so we can check movement and make sure the areas are spacious enough for when we create quests, as well as FATEs where there are large monsters. If there are no problems with this, then the BG team will produce it and the art team will create the art alongside them. The mock-ups have been completed for all of the fields and the work on the maps is moving along at a very rapid pace. We've also completed architectural checks for some of the dungeons as well. We'd like to share details with players globally at the same time, so please wait for Fan Festival to hear details about the expansion.

I doubt you would get Shadows or anything powerful because the combat design is just too limited. If it happens i would imagine it would be a very high level ability to coincide with new content that would probably just aoe and remove them all anyhow.I see Ninja just being like they have done every other class which is sort of copy FFXI but mixing old classes with old ideas,so perhaps a Samurai like single shadow ability with Rogue like invisible or sneak ideas.
I actually just Googled it and see the Ninja will be a Rogue like class,so ya i figured so and the Mudras or whatever is called is likely the same idea as the old Ninja elemental wheel effects perhaps opening up 50 potency damage based on the elements.
Also the talk of just more maps and more quests is exactly why i am no longer playing,i never liked Wow and i still don't,i much rather prefer vanilla FFXI 2.0.This design encourages boring solo play.Grouping will remain an instance idea of repeating dungeons again just like Wow.
As far as time consuming content.i would expect just like FFXI that they would speed up leveling to make sure any new player will be in line to buy the xpac sooooo perhaps opening up more dailies limits and perhaps no longer the need to return to the npc.Whatever they do they will make sure any new player will want to get the xpac instead of having to wait to catch up,i guess Ninja may in fact accomplish that anyhow.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
During last free week event, I logged in and did all (short) event content then just stared at the screen for a while thinking about what to do... Finally I logged off and never went back. This game could have been so much better.
I really want to play FF14 (I love my character there), but end-game content is just... I've done it so many times in other MMOs. *le sigh*
They should just add a class that uses mech suits. Hey, that got me into Aion... for a while. :P
Cheers.
We are going to have to act, if we want to live in a different world.
Interesting interview. It was interesting to read a bit about the early process of how they design new play field, etc. I enjoy learning about that kind of "behind the scenes" type stuff. so any little tidbit is nice.
As has become normal (for me) since ARR's release, there's always at least one answer given by Yoshi-P and/or his partner, that makes me scratch my head, thinking "Huh?"
In this case, it's this bit:
A: Kasuga: If Yoshida would like to do this then we'll think about it. However, after patch 2.35 North Shroud has been congested, and there are concerns that the same conditions would occur in other areas as well if we implemented open-world dungeons.
Yoshida: Right now, due to the fact that North Shroud serves as the entrance point for the Second Coil of Bahamut as well as the location of the Ixali base it's extremely crowded. When it comes to field areas, we need to consider congestion when creating content. It wouldn't be impossible to design such a dungeon, but the really difficult part is reward balancing. Also, it would very likely be content you couldn't complete with a small amount of people, and conversely, it would be completed quite easily if more than the necessary amount of people were to attempt it. If we were to implement this, just one wouldn't be enough and we would have to implement multiple dungeons at the same time. This kind of content would turn into a massive raid with even more participants than the Crystal Tower, and, similar to the 80-player raids of first generation MMORPGs, it would be easy to find people when it's implemented, but after a while it would be really tough to get the right amount of people together.
When we started developing FFXIV: ARR, there was the question of whether or not we would make dungeons using open-world areas, but we decided to consider it at a later date since that kind of content wouldn't last two seconds if we implemented it without balanced rewards and participation.
Additionally, the congestion in North Shroud is quite rough, so we're currently looking into whether we should implement a system that has been adopted by other MMORPGs for making multiple instances of the same open-world area. The preparations have already been made and we've implemented this into the Chinese version of the game, so we do have some operative results. We'll be testing things up until the last minute to be sure that the concept of multiple open-world instances is clear for players who aren't used to this kind of system.
MMORPGs have had open-world dungeons for over 10 years now. FFXI had open world dungeons. 1.0 had open world dungeons. One of his favorite MMOs, Dark Age of Camelot, has/had open world dungeons. EQ1 and 2... open world dungeons. How the hell can he seriously say that they can't figure out how to implement them? There's over a decade of references for them to draw from, including one of their own MMOs (namely XI), for crying out loud.
Worried about congestion in a single area? Implement more than one. Make it massive, split up into different regions, a la the current cities, and have multiple entrances from different zones.... I have to wonder if the "congestion" issue is a result of short-sightedness in how they designed the new infrastructure, because again... there are many MMOs with open world dungeons, and they don't seem to suffer that kind of problem.
He's made these kind of "I can't think of a way to do that" comments a number of times before, and in every case, there's already been a plethora of examples to draw from of how other devs did it.
It's like he's developing the game in a bubble sometimes.
OK, so, if I were to return to the game, and refocus on my Bard/Carpenter, and if I were to eventually create the:
Mischievous Moggle Mogbow
And if I were able to Over-meld it for DPS, can that DPS come relatively close to:
High Allagan Composite Bow
While I realize the question isn't really on topic, all this other stuff they have done in the game since release doesn't really make me want to come back. Not until they restore the ability for my crafting class to have a place in endgame. If they were going to limit the ability to craft at endgame, they should never have set up crafting as their own independent classes, but rather added crafting as a skill just like all other theme parks. IMO, they took the Theme park with the best crafting system I've ever seen and threw it out the window.
I'm not sure how the dps would compare but it would definitely be one of the best bows in the game. It would also be one of the most highly sought after bows in the game. Most of the players with high allagan weapons would kill for one of those. Very rare and very valuable.
Thanks,
I am not concerned with how difficult it is, and the fact that I'd probably never achieve it, isn't what my issue was. My issue was that it was impossible before. but as long as it's possible to compete via crafting, means SE hasn't written it off..........(I'll be clear on this) The way I'd want to play. This game has no Cash Shop.....YET. That's another major plus for me. Something to think about.
The amount of people playing this game is much larger than those of 10 years ago. FFXI servers had maybe 4,000 people on them at peak time. FFXIV is probably double that easily.
Couple that with the fact that FFXI had claim systems that locked everyone but the group who pulled the open world NMs and that helped mitigate the number of people that would show up in an area. This simply won't work with the way FFXIV is designed. Otherwise we'll end up with what we're currently getting now with the S rank NMs and the whole server shows up to zerg them down.
I've already spent too much time on this forum typing to FFXI fans, 1.0 fans, etc. If you don't like modern MMOs, or don't like this game, there's really no point of these insanely stupid paragraphs comparing ARR to either of those games. You people fail to understand what kind of game it is, and what works in modern MMOs. 99% of the content that you people suggest would just get zerged down, break balance, etc.

That Moogle bow will NEVER reach the level of the High Allagan Bow in terms of the DPS it will output. The only thing good about it is that it is rare and looks awesome, so people with the High Allagan will likely just use it as a costume piece.
By comparison, the Moogle bow is iLevel95 (42 dmg) vs the High Allagan which is iLevel115 (48 dmg).
The closest thing you can do is to "craft" your Novus weapon which will end up being iLevel110 (46 dmg) with stats you want.
Look into the Relic/Animus/Novus weapon quest lines for more info, not exactly crafting, but it's a longish/grindish/costly questline to get an i110 weapon which is super glowy and customized with the stats (det/crit) that you want which comes very close in DPS output to the i115 high allagan weapons (which may not have the stats you want)
