Too bad when a game has this much hype it can be the worst game ever and still bank. Which in turn leads to more hyped games.

This game has pretty bad reviews yet people defend it to death.

Reviews are not the judge of a game. Reviews are one person's experience. Many people don't like WoW, but it is far from a bad game. To me, ArcheAge is a terrible game, but look how popular it is at the moment. If enough people are enjoying a game, something about it is good.

Except that it is not just one reviewer. Its a good majority of the professional gaming media.

Bungie even lost their 2.5 million dollar bonus for failing to get good reviews. If the game did not bank it would die here.

All the reviews I am reading are saying the same things, IE Missing it's own identity, story is incomplete, no exceptional features, ETC. They, for the most part, are also say the most important thing of all, it is extremely fun. I have no idea about a bonus or anything like that. All I know is the game is a blast and tons of people are playing. How can a game that is so fun and so populated be a bad game?

No doubt the success of destiny will produce attempts to replicate it.

Destiny is not an MMO, so if all games follow the same path it will be the death of MMO's. I don't see that happening myself. I still think there's a market for Massively Multiplayer games, where hundreds of players can interact in the same game space, something that Destiny doesn't provide.

Half  a billion in sales so far.  Is this what all MMOs will look like?  A lot of people say many MMOs look like WoW because of WoW's success.

    No.

Half a billion of boxes SOLD TO RETAILERS.

Half a billion players didn't buy Destiny.

Those sales are not counted as revenue until a customer buys it off the shelf.

Yeah, the news story is $500 million in sales.  I should've put a dollar sign in there.  Now the news is $350 million in the first 5 days.  IDK.

Get this Bungie didn't want to call Destiny an MMO because they were afraid it would scare away players.  They call it

"persistent world massively multiplayer third-person shooter."

    B) There is no 3rd person shooting what so ever in Destiny....I think you should find a better source :P

On a side note, that article never once says that Bungie labled Destiny a  "persistent world massively multiplayer third-person shooter."

According to that article, here is what "Bungie" has said about Destiny up to that point:

"Up to now, Destiny has been described as a "shared-world shooter," "sci-fi open-world game," "MMO," or just plainly an "action game" on the official site. So, which one is it? But more importantly, should you even care?"

According to that article (the spot you told me to look at), here is what other companies have turned to calling their own games:

"Some game makers are beginning to refuse to define their games and be associated with genre tropes. Instead, they're leaving us with nonsensical non-descriptors like "persistent world massively multiplayer third-person shooter.""

So again, never once in that artice does it say that Bungie described Destiny as a "persistent world massively multiplayer third-person shooter." Also considering that Destiny has no 3rd person shooting, its quite clear that Bungie did not, let alone anyone else, describe Destiny as such. You either read it wrong, or are delibritly trying to make Bungie look crazy...which is it?

I know this goes against the modern gamer but 'third person shooter' to me alone is the stupidest thing ever. Granted my prediction on that fad from more than a decade ago is clearly wrong.

I dunno why you think "3rd person shooters are stupid"....Socom and Gears of War are 2 of the most entertaining franchises of the last 10 years.

well in all fairness its a seperate conversation. I just saw that and felt like mentioning it.

Yup I have hated 3rd person view since the very first time I saw it more than a decade ago.

1st person view is way better

That is just your personal preference. Given the success of games with other view points, obviously not every gamers strongly prefer 1st person.

For example, I doubt D3 combat will be as much fun if you do it in 1st person. You lose a lot of the situation awareness.

Now, it is not that I don't play FPS ... but I don't see why games need to have only one viewpoint.

the problem is the repetitiveness and lack of long-term interest leading to shorter life-spans and desperate searches for new business models rather than new gameplay mechanics.

I'm assuming you already knew all this, though.

People are asking for repetitiveness (specifically sandbox, UO type game, EQ type game ....) everyday here.

And what is wrong with shorter game as long as there are a lot of them? Just play the next one after you finish one.

I thought I made that clear when I used words like 'I know I dont represent the majorty' and 'to me'..I know its my preference and I know I am in the minorty I was just making a casual observation how I overlook games that say '3rd person'

Considering it got average to poor reviews, and isn't an MMO...

    safe to say "No."

Besides, most of those sales came from the marketing campaign and buzz, which had a budget that almost dwarfed the game.
