If you find something good let us know. Seems most games today are themeparks like WoW or hardcore PVP gankfests.

it depends on what are you looking for in mmorpg, how important is graphics for you, how important is big community etc.
I've tried/tested almost every MMO released in the past few years and I still think WoW is the best MMO out currently. It has so much content & stuff to do, you can't really go wrong picking it in my opinion.
Or you can support Kickstarter & Steam games that are bad, full of bugs, usually always ending up unfinished, ect, ect.
So.. yah.
When all is said and done, more is always said than done.
I would suggest Lord of the Rings Online which has a tremendous amount of content and systems to explore or EverQuest 2 which is also filled with things to do. They are both similar to your previous experiences, and are mature games with most of launch issued ironed out.
'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.

Suggestions ... play D3, marvel heores, and games like that. I "grew out of" classical MMOs long time ago.

You won't find anything other than fetching or killing because that is about all you can do aside from side content but point is the majority of game play revolves around those two ideas.
I don't like labelled gaming but Themepark fits since you don't play the game yourself,you play as intended by the developer,which imo is an anti rpg.
The alternative is to kill stuff,imo much more fun than running between npc's always vee-lining for the next yellow marker.
There is yet one more facet and that is killing stuff in GROUPS,go figure grouping in a MMO,too bad Blizzard never realized the concept.
I am an older gamer and i found FFXI to be my fave but things have changed in that game and like all older games is nothing but an end game push to which i am not interested in.
SO now i am enjoying Project Gorgon,totally free to play since it is in Alpha stage and by a true Indie developer with literally no money and no namer employees.Reason i like the game is it's direction,ZERO hand holding,no such thing as fetch me Themepark albeit has quests if you so desire but no yellow markers to vee-line to.It is a totally free to wander wherever game ,you play EVERY class on the same player and lots of skills to learn including some unique/funny ideas.One funny idea is early on in the noobie dungeon you can be cursed by a Cow and turned into a Cow and you get special Cow abilities and even talk like a Cow often saying MOO in place of other words lol.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Project Gorgon might be your choice. Its got a classic MMO feel, although its in very early early stages and who knows where it might go or end up, or not end up.

Give SWTOR a try if you haven't yet. Playstyle-wise it's very similar to WoW, so you'll get into that right away, but the questing approach is very different. It's a much more story driven MMO. And it has plenty of older players too.
I just saw a topic of two retired guys looking for a guild a few days ago, I'll link it if I manage to find it again. And one of the guilds I used to be in had someone who was in their sixties too.
It's free anyway, so nothing to lose in giving it a try.

I'm currently enjoying Elder Scrolls Online. The game has a lot of depth for me and though I'm only 50, I've run into plenty of folks around your age in this game. It has a pretty good community and at 68 you won't be the oldest person playing it by far.
While I haven't personally gotten to play it, I feel like Wakfu might be something you might like (Assuming you can get it to work, it won't work for me . If graphics don't overly matter and depth is what you're looking for, Wakfu sounds amazing to me. It also has the added benefit of being strategy turn-based, which is better as you age compared to twitch-based gaming (No offense intended, it's just that generally reaction time slows as you age). It's also supposed to be pretty sandboxy.

It got/gets bashed a lot, but for Quests/Questing, The Secret World has some of the best of any game I've ever played, by far, & I've been playing MMO's since Runescape launched. Definitely NOT your run-of-the-mill 'Kill 'X' , Fetch, Escort stuff.
The game is worth a look JUST for that (& for the best, funniest, most inventive cutscenes in the business). It's F2P with a non-P2W cash shop.
I am 54 and I think SWTOR is very good because the story is very well done so the quests are interesting voiced and some of the class stories are superb.
I would recommend FFXIV ARR as the main story quest is very well done and the classes are fun and the dungeons challenging as you go higher and higher and mechanics vary and are quite entertaining for a healer if you enjoy that class.
Just waiting for the day when I retire and can devote my life to dominating all of 0.0 space.
I agree every MMO player should try EVE and WoW at least once just for reference. and being retired he has the time to get involved in the 0.0 politics if he wants to .
66 here and I agree with a lot of the posts I've read. Lord of the Rings Online has a great community and a lot of content. I've been playing it on and off since beta. I'm on the Brandywine server which is one of the populated servers. You can start out F2P to see if you like it.
Another I play, and sub to right now, is SWTOR. It too is F2P so you can get a feel for the game.
I'd also add Guild Wars 2 and Everquest 2 to the list. All are good games.
I played WoW but for me I would never go back to it.
Albion Online has a $50 opt-in for founding players. It is an interesting intersect of games and very crafty. Worth watching some YouTube videos about to see if it fits you. I'm enjoying playing through right now. I also hop into Project Gorgon off and on, but I'm not won over by it like some.
It all really depends on what type of game your looking for. I have been on a search for a new mmo myself and found one a lot like Asherons Call. It's called:
Project:Gorgon
It is a indie mmo in development by Eric Heimburg and his wife, which were both devs on Asherons Call 1 & 2. It is a lot like AC1, and I must admit I am having a lot of fun playing it. The game has seen a large influx of players since some threads and videos have popped up here and it would be one I would suggest to anyone looking for a old school MMORPG feel.
It is currently in alpha and is F2P. You can go to http://projectgorgon.com and go to the Play Now section, download the game and start playing. It doesn't require you to register but it does offer it to you when in game. It is an easy process in game and you don't have to verify email or anything like that.
Game Features:
Horizontal Progression (leveling skills)
No Hand-Holding, exploration is key (There are quests to improve NPC faction for different things but that's it)
Open World Dungeons
4 zones with more upcoming
9 combat skills, 11 non-combat skills, and a huge crafting system (don't recall the number but I believe around 20) With more of each to be released during development
PVE focused but optional PVP and optional hardcore death mechanics
3 races with the ability to be cursed by boss mobs to transform into 5 other forms that you can play as (werewolf, cow, pig and more)

Check out Achaea - very deep roleplay community, friendly guilds you can auto-join as a newbie, "honors" quests that require some deep thought to solve, not just "kill X and bring me Y".

I would second the suggestion of Project Gorgon. As a mature gamer (55) that one has peaked my interest, although it remains a work in progress.
In the meantime,I have to throw out my favorite underrated game, Fallen Earth. I have been playing it almost 2 years now and the only MMO that has kept my interest for that long, was my first MMO: Earth and Beyond.
It has pretty good depth of gameplay if you ask me. But for the older crowd like us, the thing I like is that it seems to have a good pace to it. It doesn't lead you by the hand, it more or less leaves you to level as you see fit. And you create your character by assigning stat points to various skills, rather than just leveling so how you create your character is up to you. I would classify the community as mainly helpful and friendly. Every game has its share of undesirables ( and beggars) but this game has a community I like, personally. Best of all it is completely free to try , and practically free to play also.
Not a perfect game but worth a look.
