So is this a spaceship sales simulator?
  • forcelimaforcelima Member UncommonPosts: 232

This is officially out of control. What is next when people get tired of buying ships... Probably project cancelled.

It is looking more and more like thats all it is, and with each new ship 'sale' announced, the less likely i feel it is, that the game will ever release, at best, we're probably looking at several years, and at worst, it may never be actually finished. Hope i am wrong though as its a game i am waiting for along with Elite; Dangerous, which at the moment, is the only one i have any real faith in reaching completion. image

This is beyond my ability to comprehend. So glad I'm not the target audience for these sales...

lulz. Man I can't wait for this game to go live, the forums will be faaaaaaantastic. "omg gaiz, I bought three ships during alpha/beta and spent $2000, and I just uninstalled cause this game sucks."

Of course, I have no clue if the game will suck or not, I do not have a crystal ball, but this is getting a touch out of hand.

So like, when do they start selling limited edition "That's no moon..." ships for thousands?  Tens of thousands?  A limited edition ship that there's only one of that sells for a hundred-thousand?  Maybe I should start taking notes...

Maybe they should start changing the saying "If you believe that, I got a bridge to sell you" to "I got a spaceship to sell you."

yea but look how sexy it is....

i mean look at that long flat shiny deck...

and the city in teh back ground....that's real painted fog you know...i can smell the money from here...

on a serious note, i'm seriously thinking  that this game is nothing but a digital money laundering operation now.

I actually just sent this entire story to the florida attorney general. Hopefully I explained it all well enough in non geekese that they can understand why I feel there may be a Rico violation taking place with this company.

I guess the previous ship sale was a success and now they are capitalizing on this new ship. I am following the development of this game with a bag of popcorn.

This honestly makes me sick.  Not even if the game is vaporware, at least then a valuable lesson will be learned by players and there may be some extra rules put in place to prevent such "sales" in the future..  But if the game is actually released, and turns out to be mediocre or less..  Other investors will see the cash made through hype and exclusivity alone, and we'll see it more and more.

I read the thread on the official forums, so many folks talking about their wallets needing a break, they're already in the red, etc.  But oh well, gotta have it!  It's fairly sad, and the developers of this game are eating it up, going bigger and bigger.  And folks shelling out car payments' worth of dollars for something they can't even use, and honestly have no real proof they will ever be able to use.  If they do, it's only in a video game where it literally carries no substantive value.  At best.

Exactly. NO ONE has been forced into anything with this. Its all a matter of choice. If people want to spend their money to support the game, thats their choice.  Given that this is Chris Roberts, I've little doubt this is on the up and up.  I'm quite looking forward to the game myself.

Bernie Madoff looked like he was on the up and up too and look how that turned out. Just saying... Oh and by the way no one was forced to give him money either.

They should have called it 980 because for that money you can choose between a ship for a game that will be released in some years ('16-'17 from what I read) or a nvidia 980. These prices get really crazy. But hey, if people want to spend that much for it then go for it but if people keep buying ships it gets into regions that I see as investment  for which I'd want a monetary return, not some freaking ship.

Btw. did they release how much % of the money they spend on creating ships vs content?

While it's true that no one forced them to pay this, where else is it legal for folks to take half a grand from people based on promises and concept art?  Hell, even the MLB clubs refund playoff tickets if their team drops outta the playoffs in the last few games.  If they attempted to get away with refusing those refunds..  Class actions would fall from the sky.  You think anyone will get a refund of $600 a pop if this game ends up in the dumps?  From what I've gathered, these ships offer functionality that make them unique beyond just an exclusive ship skin.  If it releases only after an overhaul that reduces the scope of the game to the point where this exclusive ship amounts to little more than a $600 3D model and skin?  Will the players be reimbursed in any way?  I find it hard to believe.

Hell, the best 3D animation companies in the world get paid less for a single 3D model and skin in blockbuster movies.

Exactly. The price to labor is very questionable. Sell 1000 of these is more than half a million dollars.

I posted this at the $350 ship sale; produce a game and THEN see if players want to drop this kind of dough on virtual ships.

If this is the type of marketing that we can look forward to BEFORE the game is released, then I'll be interested to see what's going to happen when the game is actually playable. I can see it now, a ship sale ticker-tape banner at the top of the cockpit screen flashing ship sales and enhancements. Dogs fights cut short so that players can wait in line and be the first to drop more cash on the latest and greatest. It'll be wonderful! Consumerism at its finest! The game will be rebranded "Star Consumer"!!

    Game?

    What game?

Unless you mean the game the developers are playing with the fan-base.
