Intel pulls ads after Gamasutra calls gamers losers.

Gamasutra article http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/224400/Gamers_dont_have_to_be_your_audience_Gamers_are_over.php:

"‘'Game culture’ as we know it is kind of embarrassing.

It’s young men queuing with plush mushroom hats and backpacks and jutting promo poster rolls. Queuing passionately for hours, at events around the world, to see the things that marketers want them to see. To find out whether they should buy things or not. They don’t know how to dress or behave.

‘Games culture’ is a petri dish of people who know so little about how human social interaction and professional life works that they can concoct online ‘wars’ about social justice or ‘game journalism ethics,’ straight-faced, and cause genuine human consequences.

Suddenly a generation of lonely basement kids had marketers whispering in their ears that they were the most important commercial demographic of all time.

That’s why they’re so mad."

I thought it was pretty entertaining. I don't think she understands who gamers are, who game journalists are, and who game developers are. That spiel is pretty much directed at other journalists and developers since at most of those events, the general public cannot enter.

She has a point, and thats the shift to indie development with a more diverse audiences. The problem is the people she is insulting represent a $45 Billion market. What kind of idiot would ignore them because they are butt hurt over social media comments?

  • CalmOceansCalmOceans Member UncommonPosts: 2,437

I don't get the insulting myself, it would be like an MMO site saying P2P players need to get a life and get out of their basement....throw in a laundry list of insults...and expect an MMO company to put their name next to an article that says MMO players are losers, basically.

What did they even think to accomplish with this. I'm sure Intel was one of their largest sponsors and I'm sure they've lost more than just a bit of their revenue.

  • CleffyCleffy Member RarePosts: 6,413
I think Intel pulled the ad very logically. Its like its Super Bowl Sunday and them cutting to someone on the field. The person says, "I don't understand why the NFL is catering to these bloated, low-IQ, beer chugging fans who watch pretty much the same thing happen every 10 seconds." Then an ad comes up saying "This segment was sponsored by Samsung."
  • BrenelaelBrenelael Member UncommonPosts: 3,821

It's not just Intel and it's not just Gamasutra either. Many sites ran similar articles when their viewership started to tank during the height of Gamergate. These included Polygon, Kotaku, Rock Paper Shotgun and many others. This was an act of desperation when their page views started to seriously tank. Intel is just the biggest name to pull their advertising as there were many others that have pulled their ads as well. These are pretty much the sites that started the whole Gamergate fiasco and now they are going down because of it.

to be clear 'gamer culture' actually represents the minority in money spent. My grandmother playing farmville isnt exactly gamer culture. Gamer culture are just more outspoken but the over all gaming economy does not revolve around them.

Having said that, this obvious attack on women is embarassing and i dont want to be a part of gaming cluture if they are into that kind of thing.

You really need to go and see what Gamergate is and come on back because if you think it's about attacking Women you are way off base. Maybe you should go and get a clue.

Oh I know what it is.

Its a bunch of people who do not understand how sex works.

first fail is that they assume what her boyfriend said is true...fail

second they think women have some kind of super natural power that after sleeping with a man it means they can command a man to write anything she asks him to

    and..

they fail to notice the news room is filled with almost all men.

    its kinda funny

oh wait it even gets better.

on top of all that they think the REASON some journalists are raging out is because they want to get laid and write whatever the spell casting woman wants..

Wow... just wow... As I said before you really need to get a clue as you don't have any idea of what you speak. You do realize that many of the people involved in the Gamergate movement are in fact women... right? The Zoe Quinn incident may have been a triggering factor but it moved quickly past that. It was the massive attempt at a coverup that followed by the gaming press that caused Gamergate. Most people involved couldn't care less who Zoe Quinn may or may not have slept with as it was never the main point. As I said... go and educate yourself and come on back.

The simple fact that their viewership went into the toilet soon after because of the loss of trust between them and their readers. The fact that they saw their ad revenues completely tank soon after due to that same loss of trust. Their is a lot more going on here than you realize. It was the fact that the Zoe Quinn scandal trust their deceitful and deplorable lack of professional ethics into the spotlight.

P.S. Wikipedia probably isn't the best place to get your information from as it's written by it's readers.

    There are several problems here.

    1. wikipedia requires references. two sources for every claim posted I think it is. So if you take issue with the author you are also taking issue with the sources.

    2. What EXACTLY is the scandal? That Zoe is claimed to have slept with the entire staff? So the fuck what...what EXACTLY does that claim mean? was the claim prooven to be true? did she in fact have super powers that enabled her to command men to write what she wanted after sleeping with them if she in fact did? and even more importantly what EXACTLY is her agenda? to have more female lead roles?

what a bunch of full blown wankers.

Willow, I am very concerned for you. This is much more complicated than Zoe Quinn being a hypocrite, although as a woman who has gamed since I was small, I find that in and of itself is bad enough and it shows that she is a charlatan who SHOULD be exposed as such.

Since you are on the internet there is really no excuse for you to remain so ignorant of the events that have transpired and what it all means.  Big name companies pulling their advertisements, gaming outlets publishing stranger and stranger articles, people being chased off twitter, and on and on the list goes... that should tell you right there that something is going on.

The core of the issue here is that corruption between review/opinion websites, developers, judges of tournaments, and so on is getting more and more exposure - yet most discussion is shut down and completely innocent people are actually suffering for it in a multitude of ways. Frankly, I resent the hell out of being insulted and told to shut the fuck up and I'm a piece of shit. I've got a big problem with that. It's supposedly being done in my name, by social pariahs of my own gender? Nice.

P.S- By the way, and this is not specifically Gamergate related, but apparently there have been shake-ups regarding wikipedia that have been causing some issues. Mostly relating to government things, but it hasn't been solved. Ive seen it missing some information or getting a few things wrong. Anytime there is a popular issue, just stay away from Wikipedia.

    I stopped reading right there.

    1. how do you know the allegations are even true, turns out they were false.
    2. what does sleeping with someone have to do with pushing an agenda...like at all whatsoever.

    what a massive fail.

so...given that the Zoe thing turned out all to be false. what SPECIFIC journalistic incident can #Gamergate point to as part of their message. Be SPECIFIC...not abstract

    http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-London/2014/09/21/GameJournoPros-we-reveal-every-journalist-on-the-list

A secret journal group that includes game journalists and people within game companies, and former game developers and many ppl involved in indie development.

If you don't think there is an issue with a large group of influential game journalists and developers being in a secret group with email communication showing they have a specific agenda. Some of the emails saying "we should give game X a higher score to even it out"...and some saying "what's wrong wtih sleeping with developers #amirite"...then leave my thread, because you're unwilling to accept there's a problem and there's no point for you to stick around.

Yeah there is kind of a huge problem with a so called claim when said claim doesnt even mention the game in question but instead say Game X...what is that to protect national security?

    lol....

well one thing is for sure, you guys need to call up #GamerGate and help them out with their message because as a message group they have got to be the absolute worst. How do you fuck up a message so badly as this?

QUESTION: so are you saying that #GamerGate is clearly not about Zoe because that all prooved to be false so what its really all about is this one case you just linked?

How do you fuck up a message so badly as this?

The problem with Wikipedia is that unlike encyclopedia like encyclopedia britannica, the article aren't peer reviewed by an independent commitee.

In fact, the motivation and incentive to post on Wikipedia is often the direct result of inherent bias on the subject.

The fact the wikipedia article has been locked and doesn't allow changes, and seems to have been hijacked by mods should tell you about the quality of a wikipedia article.

    Just as an example:

I tried to change a medical article once regarding ATG16L1, which is an autophagy gene often mutated in people with intestinal disease. My motivation to correct it was because of my knowledge on the subject. But there was a wikipedia mod, who claimed he was a doctor, who kept reverting the article.

It was not until I spent hours telling Wikipedia that a mod who claimed to be a doctor was manipulating article, that they finally....intervened and kicked him out. That's the kind of ppl in control of Wikipedia. Turns out he was not a doctor, just an online troublemaker kid.

    Just as an example:

first off I am not even talking about Wikipedia specifically despite their requirements for sources.

What I am talking about is how is it a group that formed before the article linked is actually all about that one incident and not at all about Zoe. How did that message, regardless of the venue, get so unmesasurably fucked up.

on top of that how does a group call itself against something in plural when they are refering to ONE not multiple incidents?

CalmOceans - It's pretty obvious he has a pro Zoe Quinn agenda at this point. Since that isn't the point of Gamergate or this thread arguing with him is pretty pointless as he's closed his mind to any resemblance of truth. You should just let his replies go unanswered as I've done at this point. Don't feed him.
