I thought the whole point of the game was to own a castle/territory control. I guess not. Maybe there will be other things to accomplish on that continent?
I plan on really never ever visiting Auroria. I'm happy just fishing and farming. If a tradepack sends me up there, that's about the only reason I'd ever go up there.

Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
OP, this is exactly how I feel. I realized after playing AA that everything that it's trying to do with it's meta game and pvp politics and trade run wars is just done MUCH much better in EVE. I went back to EVE and do not regret it one bit. It just feels rather elementary to the player made content that unfolds during corp wars in EVE and territory control.
I was trying sooo hard to get my 15.00 worth that I spent on this game 10 days ago but I just can't stomach playing another day.
My sub expires 10/28 atleast that what it says in RED in the top left corner of my launcher...but I just can't do it.
so I lost 15.00 atleast I didn't lose 150 like some people did.
Another one bites the dust lets see how many popular AAA MMO titles are failing right now
ESO
Wildstar
Archeage
Is their any hope for the MMO genre?

You might want to over to the offical forums and take a gander at what's going on overthere.....folks are gone for the weekend...and the forums are now like craigslist...dont believe me go look...so what if you have issues in game over the weekend is anyone going to help??? nope
You guys need to see this game for what it is...and quick cash grab and run...you can bet by Dec. this game will be DEAD
Nah, you can look at the future of Archeage by looking at other regions. For sure, it's not doing very well (in the end, at best, it's a niche game for the hardcore who can keep up with the gear race with each other and enjoy PvPing each other in a variety of battlefields), but it's still alive and managed to survive for 2 years and going. Saying it'll be dead by December in this region is a bit TOO pessimistic, I think.

you also have to take into account the large percentage of bots making up the playerbase in the other regions (also NA).
the fact that trion GM's for this game are.. well a$$h*les from most of the forum posts i've read from people with issues getting perma banned trying to get help.
people logging into the game, making a character starting the starter zone and getting a message on their screen *You have been disconnected by a GM" or something to that affect and their accounts are locked for no reason whatsoever.
Massive zerg fest, where only the biggest numbered guilds stand a chance of doing anything meaningful.
anyone who isnt already playing is basically screwed as per my experiences in russian ( I leveled up one toon when servers went live, was nice and smooth.... went to the other faction maybe a month later and basically struggled to cap from the constant ganking and being f'ed with) new players wont enjoy that, they wont feel like their time is being spent meaningfully and veteran players arent going to constantly babysit new players to make sure they're not getting killed by patrolling gank squads constantly.
the fact as someone else mentioned that you my not HAVE to do quests, but that can be said about any game... basically any themepark game out now you dont HAVE to do quests, but IT IS the most efficient way to level.
client side based combat - if you dont know why this is an issue, do some research.
Trion cant do anything about it because XL is the developer their hands are tied.
Honestly, at some point Trion might have seen some kind of potential in this game... but soon after that diappeared and it's turned into a desperate cash grab to make as much money as possible as quickly as possible before everyone jumps ship.
Oh yes, I don't expect the game to do well for sure. "Life support", you could call the state of it, eventually, I imagine.
But when someone says "Dead", I usually assume they mean "Shut down". I doubt Trion will pull the plug on Archeage until they've milked it for all they could, and that will likely be significantly longer than a couple months (December)
Originally posted by Mardukk I thought the whole point of the game was to own a castle/territory control. I guess not. Maybe there will be other things to accomplish on that continent?

Maybe if the game population goes way down. With that few castles it is going to be a challenge of epic proportions. That's like having 4 - 6 cities in Darkfall...I can't imagine (and Archeage has 10x the population).
Edit: I think they are in the beginning stages of a lot of this game. I have no doubt they will add more opportunity, as they add zones, in all aspects (territory control/housing etc).
1) The entire game was designed around the concept to monetize Korean players paying for internet per hour in an internet cafe; and
2) They decided this business model did not need be changed even the slightest bit for a western players which is why it sucks so bad.
Think about it, if there is a limit to only 4 guilds having castles, then the only way to overcome that is to stay online all the time with your friends, racking up the per hour costs at your local internet cafe, in order to try and beat them. And the guys who have the castles then need to spend all day online trying to defend them. Versus if they had more territory, you would be happy to claim one, play a little, and then log, which would not keep racking up the bills for metered internet access and defeat the purpose of monetizing this game in Korea.
Along with labor points and many other ridiculous concepts, this game is the perfect example of what happens when you try to force a foreign business model onto a culture where it does not apply at all. It's like the old story about the Chevy Nova when they tried to sell it in South America. They didnt bother to change the name and surprise, it was complete dude. Probably because "no va" means "no go" in Spanish. Someone failed to even do the most basic of localization research. Same here with XL games and trion.
I'm sure there will be a bidding system for keep sieges, and or safe time, which most likely will be the majority of the time.
Originally posted by JDis25 People are really reaching to find reason to hate this game now. It is definitely not for everyone and there are aspects that could be tweaked for the western audience. But it is in no way a "broken" or bad game.
Broken- don't think so.
'Bad' - very subjective.
Perhaps a little too complicated ..for the Simon say's crowd , lots of very subject "Bad" comments are the reflections of folks frustration at not being led by the hand to the next dungeon run
It seems to be quite the opposite actually... many of the "bad" comments are from people who were expecting a "sandbox" but are led by the hand to the next quest hub instead, including the next dungeon...
The only problem with this argument that a sandbox excludes quest or quest hubs. There are many, many who don't follow the quest chain. They do a host of other things, and maybe do a quest here or there. Have a quest system can very easily be attached as a sandbox element when it isn't necessary to do. Thus it just becomes another option for those who want. My idea of a sandbox is that you have as much freedom of choice as possible.
Sounds to me like alot of you out there have no idea what the point of the castles even is. The reason there are only 4 of them, is to promote rivalry and make them contested. If there were hundreds, or even dozens, there wouldnt be the need to constantly compete, you would just take one of the others.
Also, they are not end game. As someone said in this thread, its not "the point of the game". They offer no real benefit, theres no uber buffs, or "protected" lands, or honestly, anything at all. They are purely for bragging rights. Its only meant for the strongest guilds (largest, best skilled, most PVP oriented, ect.) to compete over, just for the sake of saying they own it. Your little 5 man guild is not meant to own a keep, or take part in sieges, get used to it. Dont like it, join a larger guild, or play a different game.
This is not news. Everyone has known for years how this system works. Its only your own fault if you find disappointment in it. As for me, Im happy with it. Im also in one of the largest guilds on my server, and we have plans, along with 2 other guilds on our faction to try to lock down the entire continent (the 4th castle being a free for all). This part of the game is not meant for everyone. If you are interested, seek out the guilds that have the capability to control them. If not, go back to fishing, or whatever it is you do.
On a side note, for those who dont know, you only really need 100 people for a castle, honestly thats really not that large of a guild in the big scheme of MMOs. Some guilds have 800+ members. If you are smaller than 100 people, you are probably struggling in the game anyways, as most of the larger PVP events require more people than that to be effective.
Castle sieges are planned and timed. There are bidding wars for the rights to attack a keep and it can only happen then (theres an item that goes on the auction house). So you dont need to constantly have people patrolling the area, or protecting the land, or defending the walls. The sieges are set times, determined before hand, and are also limited in number (70-100) max participants. Do your research before coming to some random thread and giving out false information, its not that hard. 2 minutes on google would have told you everything you needed to know about castles and sieges.
Whoa, that's even worse news. The castles are not supposed to provide anything other than bragging rights. Well in that case four may do it, as that will be the people that pvp just for the sake of pvp...no benefit. I take back my complaints, they can have the castles and their "bragging rights". Number limits and no benefit, sounds like they may as well instance them and go the GW2 route. My mistake thinking those were the ultimate goal in the game, silly me.
Unfortunately, space games have it easier. Making interesting space is relatively simple compared to making massive land masses that you don't want to look pre-generated or copy and pasted.
yeh we all see how "epic" Eve Online is with that system atm do we ? Nice renter agreements and filling the pockets of the dictators of Eve Online with almost no contend other then a few TiDi battles per year where members are abused as meatshields in a numbers game.
Dont get me wrong as Archeage is kinda similar in a way as you need big guilds / alliances in your faction to gaurd your back when doing traderuns to Freedich. But you have tons of more fun when pvp happens in big scale fights.
And you know what ? even tough Archeage is a korean mmo it offers tons of more fun outside of the raid / group settings to pass the time. So much to do on your own or with a few friends or with a big raid that it makes all those themeparks from the past 5 years look like boring on rails carrot on a stick money grabs.
Sorry to say this but i prefer this "Korean" mmo over any of these themepark crap anyday of the week.

First off to the OP, I actually like your idea better than Archeage's. However the game is what it is and I doubt we'll see any significant changes any time soon if at all.
Now to explain why Oldschoolpunk is full of shit .. only joking. I completely agree. The more diverse a game is the more people you can get to play. The more people that play the more resources there are to keep the game growing.
This doesn't really follow with the point you made, but this is my outlook on the whole thing. The best part of an open PVP game is having victims. As I told a gamer last night in Archeage, the best part of being a wolf is being able to hunt sheep. Without a PVE or as some call it, a "carebear" element to a game, you just end up with the same tired assholes PKing each other pretty much just for the sake of doing so. Big fucking whoop. Might as well just stick to games with canned battle arenas.
Now back to the OP's idea. After playing awhile I actually think that the little safe zone farm plots were a very bad game mechanic. I feel they should have just made those areas semi-limited public farm areas and made the whole player base have to band together and create large "villages" as it were out in the wild frontier. Properties that have to be protected, could be raided, could be captured or destroyed, or at least diminished. I think on the whole that would have made Archeage a much more exciting game. As it stands, at least for me, sitting on my little snuggly wuggly safe zone farm is about as exciting as watching paint dry. I've actually started secret unsafe farming just for the sheer excitement of the element of risk. And yeah I know that there are adrenalin rush giving trade pack runs, but for me those just aren't enough to keep me interested. Without that element of risk, crafting, which you have to admit is a big part of this game, doesn't do much for me so Its an element I'll bypass doing as much as I possibly can.

To each his own offcourse
Why be sorry that you like something? :P
But yeah I agree with you there is a lot of things to do in ArcheAge, and you do need people to watch your back.
Idk if I prefer it over any other game right now, but I am trying to get my first toon to 50, so I've mostly been focused on playing this game over Guild Wars 2.
And after playing Themepark MMOs with dungeon finders and instanced pvp it's kind of refreshing to play a game where you can fight (or gank) other players in the open world.
Some of us knew this would happen. Mega-guilds will control the server, and all the lowly peons will suffer. If you're not going to join a mega-guild, then you will be at a disadvantage. I'm not talking about a guild with 100 members either. I'm talking about guilds that span across several MMOs, with thousands of members. Alliances of smaller guilds will not matter either.

I'm still not getting the issue but I suspect that the issue is one that I see as a "non-issue".
So, to be clear, I'm not part of the group of people who think that just because I play a game that I an entitled to every aspect of that game simply because I play it. I do believe that if the game offers things that need to be earned then they should be earned.
so, if there are 4 castles (or 6) and only the best can get them then that's fine.
Having said that, if there can only be two participants for each siege one attacker one defender, then I'll agree that there is a problem.
So if the highest bidder gets to siege and that cuts out everyone else then yes that is an issue. The caveat to that would be that since it is based on an economic barrier (I believe the guild needs to purchase the "right" to siege) then guilds are going to have to make sure they compete on an economic level. on one hand that makes sense as crafting and selling is a huge part of this game.
But again, after a while that could get old if there can only be a few sieges per month. If however, anyone can siege as long as they can pay their way in, then that's different.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

Very well said, I agree with everything you said 110%.
The whole thing is soo funny to me...a company williing to hurt its own image and brand reputation for some game that failed horribly in its own home-market.
I won't be buying or paying Trion for anything anytime soon, probably never. Didn't play AA, but knew it was fail wayyy before it got released. I feel sorry for the innocent non-hackers that got suckered in this mess.
But I also think this game is important, because it gets the word sandbox flung around amongst gamers, and it means more people will be playing EQN.

LOL...I love the new sig btw!

LOL! Thanks! I can't take credit for it though. I just found it on the internet and resized it.
