[Review] The Banner Saga: A Gorgeous Handcrafted Game

The Banner Saga began its life as a Kickstarter created by Stoic, a new company founded by former employees of Bioware Austin. That lineage is unsurprising; The Banner Saga is a story-driven, branching dialogue tactical RPG in the great Bioware tradition. After being very successfully funded in April of 2012, it was released on PC and Mac in early 2014 and was released for iOS devices in early October. Stoic has mentioned in Kickstarter updates that the Android release is imminent, but for the time being we took the opportunity to review the iOS version and evaluate what kind of fit this already critically successful RPG is on mobile devices.

The Banner Saga is a great game and one of the ones I point to when the anti Kickstarter crowd start harping on.

    Very much a fan.

I agree. It is one of my favorite games made in the past few years.

    +1

Amazing game that sucks you in and makes you actually really become attached to the story and characters.

I just saw on Steam they are pushing a new version called The Banner Saga: Factions which is a online F2P game.  Shame they would besmirch a good game making a F2P version.

Its the same company and game just the multiplayer part of it.

Kinda smart imo since it get people to try the combat segment of the game, if they like it the may buy the singleplayer version aswell.

This game was great for what it is. It doesn't have depth in anything but the story is wonderful and the combat is reminiscent of old turn based combat games.

They are worse than useless because you want to believe them. They will defend you against critiques that are valid. They will seduce you into believing you are done learning, or into thinking that your work is better than it actually is." ~Raph Koster

Factions was released while the main game was still in development. It was a way to test the game's combat system on a larger scale before release. Additionally, the in game store was a way to support the small dev team after their kickstarter campaign closed. Personally, I think it was done rather tastefully.
