For me $15 for a monthly sub in WOW (February) and there is a strong indication this will remain my total spending for the year. As a hardcore gamer and a veteran MMORPG gamer I've successfully managed to adapt to the current state of gaming and entertain myself with other games/activities that cost me $0.00.
For me it comes down to entertainment value and $ it costs me. I calculate that ratio. If a free game/activity offers me for example entertainment rating of 7/10 and another game/activity that costs $ and offers me entertainment rating of 7/10 or 8/10 I always choose the free option. Usually, I choose to spend $ when a game/activity that costs me $ becomes significantly more entertaining to me than the free option. Example, a game/activity that has an entertainment value of 9/10 or 10/10, while the free game/activity is 7/10 at best. $ has never been an issue for me for affordability. I have sufficient $ to afford and enjoy any product that comes out.
In some of the years in the past I've made bad decisions and had regrets with how I've chosen to spend my $. 2014 for me has been definitely a successful year, enjoying a lot of games/activities while spending far less in the process. I hope this was also the case with the most here. At the end as a consumer/customer my $ is my opinion, my vote that actually counts and what kind of future I envision/seek/demand to be willing to spend $ on. I'm aware that I'm only one individual out of millions out there and that my vote has very small/insignificant impact on the industry as a whole, but just knowing that I've done my share and contributed for a brighter, better future for us the gamers and it gives me some peace, pride and joy that I've evolved and become somewhat better than before.
At the end, this was all also possible thanks to the tools and technology we have in 2014, the expanded market that's become more competitive to deliver something better (both in quality and price) than what we have available and the ever growing number of experienced/veteran players like me as time goes by. I'm just glad to see that I'm not alone or a "niche audience/market" anymore as some would argue here or in the past. Fact is, if I did not have the experience I do today, I would've seen myself spend far more $ in 2014. Many games today I find myself playing are the games I've been fortunate to experience in the last 1-2 decades.
I hope and look forward to spend more $ in 2015. I sincerely hope we all get to have something worthy that we would enjoy spending our $ one day. If not, I will continue to enjoy another year winning the battle against those who failed to take $ off me with their products.

5 months of wow sub (jun-may) + RoS + WildStar (box only as for sub i used credd) = 115 euros for me until now.
My next and last buy for 2014 will be Dragon Age Inquisition. As for sub games i m done for good with them.

$50 on path of exile because it rocks and it's F2P and the devs deserve it.
Around $120 on steam sales.
$0 on MMOs. It seems that after being the victim of hype so many times in the past I have finally learned my lesson. My friends are still crying for the money they wasted on ESO and WIldstar.

I'm probably in the $1000 area when all is said and done. That's between PC Games, Steam, Console games, and subs.

I've spent 300 rl creds this year because that's all my goverment allows me to. Also my brother who lives in the US bought for me a full year SOE all access and paid for my wow sub so I'm happy.
I was a bit shocked by this comment "As a hardcore gamer and a veteran MMORPG gamer I've successfully managed to adapt to the current state of gaming and entertain myself with other games/activities that cost me $0.00" As a gamer with a small wallet I enjoy playing free games, But also I'm aware that if you don't support the companies with money, those games will be no more. Maybe you just see the "game" I see the people behind them, and they need monies to buy the latest iphone too, and eat and all that shtako.... Is as simple as "If you like someone's work, Show support"
Fortunately for the gaming industry there are still a few more "me's" than "you's"
Oh and this year's bad decision: Wildstar, Hands down. Which is a pity cause I really was riding that hype train so hard.
I like to set aside $50 per month towards online gaming. I don't always use all of it. But, I try never to exceed it. Except on days where I feel I am allowed to treat myself (like my birthday or christmas or some other arbitrary date). But, I rarely go past $20 (beyond what I budget myself) when I do. So, probably around $650.00 USD over the course of the coming year.
Which is considerably more frugal then what I used to spend on online gaming during the course of a year (if I go back say 3-4 years). It wasn't out of the question for me to end up spending in excess of $2000.00 USD. I wouldn't say I have dropped it down significantly out of a lack of faith in MMOG or anything. More like I have matured a fair bit in respects to my fiscal responsibilities and I started paying attention to how much I was actually spending and realized I could get my entertainment for a lot less if I was not as... care-free about it.
I have also realized that my dollars register my interest. And, so sometimes even if I am not of a mind to play a game a lot myself. I may gift it to a friend who might be interested in it. If I feel that the content is of a quality that I would like to see more of in general.

I was curious and plugged in the numbers to an averages calculator. this took some fudging as some comments gave a range rather then a close thereabouts. For those replies I just used the median sum for the ranges given. And one of the comments isn't accounted for. As I don't know how much a credit is worth in USD, or a full year of SOE offhand (for the country that person lives in, which to factor that in would need to be named, or more specific information about what it translates to in USD given).
Anyway...So far, forumites spend an average of about $914.00 USD annually (by their own estimations) on Online Gaming. Which translates to an average of $76.16 USD. per month. Or $2.53 USD. per day of entertainment in an average month.
Just thought that might be interesting to see for some here. If we keep this thread going a while. Maybe we can see what the long tally looks like compared to the short.
@OP
I would suggest editing this thread (if possible) include a poll... something along the lines of:
"I spend in the following range per year for Online Gaming (choose the one that best suits you)."
$0-$100
$110-$200
$220-$400
$500-$800
$1000-$2000
$3000-$5000
more
Of course the range could be adjusted to what appears to be more representative of the price brackets. But, so far it seems to me when estimating range the higher the end possible spending is. The wider people estimate their range to be. I think this would be good because not every one will be comfortable talking about what they spend. I am sure for some here it would mean admitting that they spend an amount that they think is far too much or too little for what they get, or that they are on an *cough* allowance*cough* So, a poll would allow more people to contribute to the thread with a degree of anonymity.
This year I've spent about $20 on gaming. No steam sales, no subs, and not a dime spent on f2p games. I instead went out to my local small game shop and rummaged through their "oldies" to see what I could find. Picked up the Collectors Edition of Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2.
I have a ton of other games kicking around the house that I never got around to finishing, so I am now sitting down and giving them a proper try. Still a couple months to go before the year is out but as it stands nothing else will get any of my money.
As it stands, the MMO genre has lost it's appeal at this point in time. I still check in to see what's being developed and where everything is headed but I find I care less and less.
Time will tell...
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
you might like this site: http://gamefabrique.com/ (if you don't know of it already). Free classic plastic in PC form. All inclusive too. No need to run ROM's (or have several Diferent ROM's and key mappers, or anything annoying like that). Classic games as small stand alone apps. Easy and lightning quick to download, install, play, and then delete when your over them. There is a lot of simple joy in going back once in a while. And I can empathize with the sentiment.
I bought a founders pack for Archeage at around £100, but that so far has got me 4+ months of play plus a stack of other goodies and I haven't had to spend another penny.
Looking at the game and what I have, I actually don't see me having to going forward either tbh...
So, 2014 spend for MMORPGs? £100.
Founders Pack AA $150.00
ESO Imperial Edition $ 80.00
EVE Online $200.00
So roughly $430.00 in software costs this year.
New gaming laptop $2500.00
New High Speed FIOS modem $ 100.00
Yeah, this isn't a very cheap hobby, but hey, less than golf.

I am wondering if it is fair to include equipment or services. Not calling into question the value of such in enhancing the experience. But are we setting the scope this wide; Or should the focus be more on 'when you get out the card for a game related purchase'? I think it may be more easily accountable for any practical purposes if we keep the scope rather narrow.
Outside of my monthly FFXIV sub, nothing really. So about 100 euro this year on MMO.
You can play Golf for a lot cheaper than that. Public Golf is $30 for 18 holes, you could Golf every other day for that money and still come out far below the cost of that. Golf material can be bought rather cheaply.
Yea not much here either. I bought GTA 5 for the 360 for half price. That is about it this year. Main games now are Fallen Earth and Project Gorgon both completely free.
Still have Swotor and Lotor on my drive but haven't played in a while. And still haven't finished Skyrim.
Just don't have a good reason to spend right now. Perhaps if something really big come that turns out to be good and has a sub I might sign up.
But really there is plenty out there for free IMO. And plenty I still haven't finished.

Excluding hardware and associated costs, I've spent a little over $1000 (USD) so far this year; so about $100/month.
Money wisely spent: FFXIV and Marvel Heroes
Money not so wisely spent: ESO and a PS4
I don't know what I was thinking buying a PS4. Maybe I'll be able to do something useful with it at some point, like install Linux.
