[Column] Dawngate: Why Losing Dawngate is a Shame

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

Yesterday, EA announced that Dawngate, its first foray into the MOBA genre, would be shutting down in 90 days. I sometimes find myself surprised at how cynical I’ve become in my years writing about videogames, but this news honestly came as a surprise to me.  Was I naïve to think that Dawngate had a snowball’s chance in hell at survival?

I never ever heard about this game until now! No wonder the game is shutting down...

Oh and typical EA, post upcoming patch notes on the same day they announce shutting down the game. Classy!

The only surprise that came to me was... What the **** is Dawngate?  Apparently it came and went without nil a notice from me.

Everything is enabled for free for all players for the remaining 90 days of the game's service. I think if you're a MOBA fan you'd do yourself a disservice to not check it out before it goes. It's got some great ideas and strong execution. Unfortunately, I don't think that's enough these days unless you've got some big 'WOW!' factor that is easy to notice.

Dawngate is a MOBA player's game, not so much a new-to-MOBA players game. If you weren't captured by League of Legends and looked at Dawngate and saw the same, you probably wouldn't care. But if you're a MOBA fan, you're likely to appreciate a lot of the cool things they're doing to set itself apart. Also, I love, love, love the characters and universe Waystone created. Fun characters, interesting designs. Sad to see it go!

The game isn't shut down yet and so why should they rob players of work the team has done and ready? EA is also refunding players on all purchases made throughout the beta, which is pretty classy if you ask me.

The team behind Dawngate should have known striking a deal with the devil would have resulted in this.

    How true.

I will say this, although I am not a big MOBA fan, I liked this game a lot more than LOL.

I have already played 1000+ LoL and Dota 2 games, 200+ Smite games. All I can say is that maybe I played only 10 games of Dawngate but  there is no way Dawngate could compete with those mentioned titles :-)...Its really hard for new MOBAs because we already have all we need, LoL, Dota and Smite

How is it EA's "fault" though?

Never heard about this game either, like ever. So it's likely that was the problem.

Love the game and hope Waystone Games will find a way to get back the rights of the game and somehow keep it alive.

Been following the game since early closed beta over a year ago. The devs had a very up front and community driven approach during all development. Never seen a studio stream their game so much, and that early in its development. Those guys were really proud of their game and it was a lot fun to play too.

... And the game did receive a little bit of coverage. But indeed, EA didn't seem to bother advertising it that much, sad...

Do yourself a favor and try it out before the servers go down .. 90 days to go !

Never really looked into Dawngate. I didn't like the top down perspective of LoL and Infin Crisis when I decided to give MOBAs a try. Smite is really the only one that worked for me. I did see Dawngate out there but it struck me as pretty much the same as LoL. I couldn't really discern anything about it that would make it different. It sounds like it did have some need game play concepts but that didn't really come across to me when I looked at it. That may be why it died. People are just not seeing the point of going to smaller moba if it doesn't have a draw, like smite with the over the shoulder, mmo like perspective.

But then again, it seems like everything that EA touches, that isn't named "Madden", turns to s%^*.

Its a shame, but for EA they have the expectation of insane numbers with little money spent. Such little advertisement  for the game didn't help it at all. Its not like it didn't have players, the issue stands it just didn't get enough to live up to EA standards. If they only figured out "Derp, maybe we should give money to advertise the game" they could of gotten more numbers to get at least closer to their unreasonable expectations.

Personally, I found the mechanics in this game stronger then wow, its format for a match for me just felt better. My favorite MOBA as of late to be blunt, I feel a step up in the genre in taking the format and making it better.

Dawngate had nothing unique or innovating going on. Tried it , 5 minutes later uninstalled it.

Forgettable LoL clones that do nothing but bring a tiny hi-ccup of a twist are nothing more than cannon fodder in this genre.

I do not believe aside from Dota that any of those other attempts ahve craved out a community of any meaningful size. What i do believe si that each installment has a carry over of LOL or Dota players that just want to try more than one offering, however when comes to the top of the competitive scene they will still goto LOL or Dota.I even believe that Dota is also carrying most likely 90% of the LOL players,so my point is that it is all the same players.

This is no different than the rpg scene,if not for f2p most would be holed up in Wow still not willing to try other games if a large initial cost was there.

Personally i don't find one any better than the other, just so happens that LOL garnered the large crowd first with Dota a close second no different than Wow grabbing the majority of the NEW online gamer back in it's day.I have tried LOL several times thinking that perhaps a different feeling from one day to the next would change my mind but i always quit within an hour vowing to never try it again.

Such is the case for all new ideas,be first or be a distant second.

Ok, EA needs to die, in pain.

They turn every franchise  with big potential they get their hands on into shit or oblivion.

The last big dissappointment i had was with the shutdown of Rusty hearts, and now this.

I cannot understand how crapier games can stay on the surface while some little treasures sunk in no time, really.

I just can't get into the MOBA thing. But it's always said when any game shuts down. We took for granted as kids our games could always be played forever and ever. They were ours to own until we broke it, threw it out, or traded it in.

Now, with more and more games being online and requiring this connection to be played at all its changing what it means to play a game.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE online gaming and most particularly MMORPGs and I'm fortunate that the majority of the ones I've treasured since 1996 are still running.

It's a little saddening that a game at least someone cherished will never be played again.

Not that I'm a fan of MOBAs, but I have never heard of this game before today. Guess it sucks if someone was still enjoying it.
