Seems like lots of tight paths to follow so they couldn't give that up. In some review videos I see you can actually go off the path which is nice. Some areas do seem locked. I wouldn't be surprised to run into some invisible walls along the way.
Great article, very informative. Liked the highlights of playing on a pc.

I honestly like the idea that all can res. It's much truer to "real" life in that anyone who participates in battle will do whatever they can to assist or bring back fallen comrades. As much as I thought I would hate the no healer thing going in, I have found that it is not a big issue and frees mages up to do other, better, more interesting things.
I just liked having to carefully budget your heals and res spells and protect your healers carefully although I guess it did contribute to how overpowered mages were in DA:O (my usual party was 3 mages and a tank and late game combat was not usually very hard with that setup). I hope they will make the tactical combat interesting and full of tradeoffs in other ways though.
Why won't the author give me the PC specs and monitor they played on? Waaaaaaaaaaah! lol.
My specs are listed at the end of the article on page 2. I play on a 27" Samsung monitor.
I'm curious about exploration and previous claims that DAI was an open world RPG. I don't think I need this answered, he does say that you have tons of explorable areas you can unlock. So it's NOT an open world RPG like Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind etc.
This is one of those persistent misunderstandings about Dragon Age Inquisition. Bioware has never claimed that DAI would be an "open world" akin to Skyrim.
The map is used to unlock enormous areas, each one of those can be explored freely and at will, off the beaten path and so on. DAI does not feel as restrictive as DA2 and is much more open than DAO. Traveling in the DAI world is not much different than the teleportation system in Skyrim. The only difference is that some areas are unlocked via the War Room map. Others are simply found on the overworld map and are huge. In fact, the Hinterlands, just one of many areas, is bigger than the first two games combined and can be explored in any way a player sees fit.
I'm curious about exploration and previous claims that DAI was an open world RPG. I saw something in this video little after mid way (15:40) through that concerns me. Maybe I'm not understanding what I'm seeing here, but the part regarding the war room map makes it appear that you can't roam the open world and that you have to unlock areas by sending an Agent out first..... Is this the case? Can you not openly walk all across Ferelden and Orlais?
** I don't think I need this answered, he does say that you have tons of explorable areas you can unlock. So it's NOT an open world RPG like Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind etc.
It's open world in that you can go off the beaten path, explore, and find adventures out in the open world. In fact, from what I read, a lot of the best stories and adventures come from exploring off the beaten path.
DA: O and DA2 only gave you very small chunks of the world in which to play in due to following a linear story. This game lets you go off and do things on your own, and the world is absolutely massive.
Doesn't get much more open than that, although I'm sure storylines still make it a bit more restrictive than Skyrim.
First, that was a very well written review. Second, there is a 100% chance that I will be buying the deluxe edition. I also love that it will have the MMO-ish multiplayer completely separate from the single player experience. Between this and the Witcher 3 in a few months, we are experiencing a new golden age in RPGs. Here's to many more!
Only thing i find annoying is the fact that the game is only available via ORIGIN. I'm not very fond in EA Origin DRM platform, all my games these days are bought on steam, DA : Inq is one of the rare game that will be exlusive to origin which sucks in my book.

Thank you for the response. I suppose I misunderstood their comments about drawing inspiration from Skyrim. From what little I've seen I have no doubts that this will be a good game, but I don't believe it holds onto the RPG Crown for very long, if/when the next TES game comes out.
I do have another question, has anyone heard if this game will be modable? DAO had a nice following and some decent community created mods/quests, etc. DA2 didn't have any additional quests, but did have some aesthetic improvements created by the community, weapons/armor, etc.
Thank you not only for the article, but following up on the questions. I have been following this game for a while and was knock down happy when EA was giving DAO away for free a few weeks back. I immediately started a new toon and rummaged through my software to find all my DA stuff. I just finished DA2 so that I can import the file and then read about the keep (writing your backstory) and thought what a great concept. I am looking forward to playing this one and cant wait until the end of the semester.

The frostbite engine that DAI runs on is very difficult to mod. Therefore you should not expect the amount of mods that DAO or Skyrim have.
However, whether a game gets modded or not depends mostly on how much time and effort the community for that game wants to spend trying to do it.
Other BioWare games that weren't outright moddable like the Mass Effect series or DA2 did receive a lot of mods in the end. So I'm sure we'll see some tweaks eventually.

How does the coop thing work exactly is it hosted by EA or do I have to find 3 or 4 people to play with ? I was so sad about Destiny being first person since I get terrible headaches from an FPS but this one is third person view and I was hoping to participate with other people you know random match ups and fun to ensue kinda of thing.
I only played the first game which was to put it shortly simple brilliant. Was the second game also coop ? But I avoided it because of the the bad reviews not too sure I would want to play it but this one I am interested in.

No this is the first DA game featuring multiplayer.
You probably just queue up for a game through the lobby and get placed with 3 strangers, or you invite your friends over. ALA Mass Effect 3 multiplayer.

It's funny. Dragon Age didn't get good until the third game, and Mass Effect was good until the third game.
This is obviously your opinion. I loved ME3. I'm sure I'm not alone on that.
I loved ME3 also. They messed up the ending but made up for it with that last DLC of the apartment, mini adventure, and the party.

DA-O...day zero DLC and you couldn't stray 5 feet off the clearly marked path..... PIssed off I was...fooled me once.
DA2....need I say more?...Fool me twice...
DA:I...only thing I can say is....you do your paid job well Ford in helping to generate sales for your deep pocketed advertisers games. Kudos to you I guess but it'll be a cold day in hades before I let EA have my money. Not saying I wont play the game, but if I do, I will make sure it is in a way that doesn't generate profits for EA.
Heh..BIoware reclaims the RPG crown...yeah, in a world of blind people, the one eyed man is king.

I would lay off the drugs man. They are making you paranoid.
After the debacle of DA2 and ME3, Satan will be ice-skating his way to work before I give EA any of my money. Many, many sites gave Dragon Age 2 the same type of glowing reviews / previews, only for myself and many others to discover that the good qualities were exaggerated, and the bad ones were either downplayed, glossed over, or completely ignored. In fact I would even go so far as to state that DA2's reviews stand even today as proof positive that publishers do, in fact, pay for positive press.
I'll stick with The Witcher games for immersive RPGs. They deliver exactly what they promise and earn their good reviews by being good games, rather than by CDProjekt stuffing dollar bills down reviewers' figurative g-strings.
Note: Not accusing this site or Suzie of anything, merely relating my experience and POV in general.

Da:O was a pretty good game, no it's not open world, but that doesn't make an RPG bad in and of itself.
