Not entirely sure what you're expecting, this happens every expansion for their populated servers. When you have mass amount of players flooding back on top of the new and consistent players on the server, there is going to be trouble. There is no design that can compensate or even know where people will play.
Add in the DDoS opportunists then the problem compounds and Blizzard has done better than most companies in handling the issue.
As for the communication, what do you want? updates on the hour every hour? They've made official posts statements, there isn't much left to be said. There is nothing else they can tell the angry mob that will appease them.

For all Blizzards twaddle about only launching games when they are ready, no matter how long it takes, every single launch this company does is a train wreck. The initial WoW launch was epic in its pure badness, but they had the excuse that it was new.
They now have 10 years of experience, sub numbers, numbers on how many people bought the xpac and they still act like they got jumped in a back alley. More maint tomorrow and, most likely, it will be extended. but hey, they appriciate our patience.

Exatly what I'm planning on doing. I wanted to hear feedback first on the expansion before jumping in. So far so good, lag/queues/dc's aside. looking forward to playing WOD come Jan.
I'm always a little boggled when I see any veteran poster complaining about typical launch problems, IE queues, lag, DC, etc..etc..etc.. I can't remember the last game I purchased day one (the last non F2P I played at launch was TOR and it was a gift), it's simply asking for disappointment. The more popular the offering the worse it's going to be.
Attacks.. no attacks.. it doesn't matter, there are bound to be problems, when systems get bogged down, they do odd things, or flat-out buckle. All the IT experts in the world have been hard pressed to do much to change it. Some companies have managed to sustain a decent experience, none have sustained a great experience at launch. I still say those examples are rare, they're in no way normal, and most were left with a bunch of empty realms a few months later. What's worse really? Does WOW really need a bunch of new servers? I'd much rather deal with a week or two of issues, than have to be uprooted and all that comes with a merge.
Any vet should know the weeks surrounding launch are going to be ripe with issues and are best to be missed.. They can have a nasty habit of spoiling the entire experience, how hard is it to wait a couple weeks?

I mail ordered my exp pack. I won't get it till Tuesday, with that said I am not happy with the wait times to log into my main server or the alt servers I play on. This is the 4th? exp pack and the game is 10 years old? I would have expected better from Blizzard
Me too. I'm only on here cause I took a break to poo. There was a queue when I logged in tonight. Was about 30 itchymins. I just played on my tab s until I got in. This shit happens with just about every game on la inch and people still bitch away. It's a launch with millions of players. This isn't wildstar with its 50-60 players on peak lol. Things aren't gonna go perfectly.
I bought a pair of under armor shoes the other day. Paid good money for them too. They arrived defective with jacked up stiching. HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN from a multi-million dollar shoe company! It's sposta be perfect! Shit happens folks. Wear a helmet.

I agree this launch is beyond unacceptable. There is no excuse a billion dollar corporation with 10 years almost on this game alone , the resources and beta tester to stress test in the millions. ( it is not a server pop issue). Low pops are locked and down as well. I don't believe this is DDos either it's a continuing trend of their lazyness.

However the QUeues are getting out of hand, the DDOS attacks are also getting worse instead of improving things, and since the game is that good more and more people keep returning, making the problems even worse, in the end it will all be okay

Sadly the whole game is down right now in EU, with blizzards websites unreachable, so no clue why

As a tester for this expansion can say I submitted almost 2 k bugs, well closer to 1900 to be fair.
Problem is very few game devs even look at tester bug reports these days, if they do not find the bug with the in-house testers then it won't get on the fix list.
When studios decided to make test phases about nothing but hyping the game they kind of shot themselves in the leg.
Most testers are worthless, but a few still take it very serious and complete quality bug reports if the game devs would actually read them.

What is the scary thing in my book is how stupid game developers really are. Talk to them at cons and conventions, ask them some technical or coder questions about their jobs, and they are quickly looking at you with glazed over eyes saying. " We do it because it's pretty. "
Most of them are simply tech school grads that have zero idea how to actually code anything, all they know how to do is use toolsets they are provided.
So when conflicts and bugs do arise, who the hell runs the code and writes the fix?
On top of this studio management tends to think all gamers are stupid as well, which considering how much money we throw away on craptastic games and expansions maybe we are.
Sadly considering us stupid they tend to think it ok to toss us one lie after another thinking we are too stupid or lazy to ever check the facts.
You know, one of the most striking revelations that I experienced from my recent foray into single player games was that when you buy a highly anticipated single player game, you can actually go home and play it day one. You aren't having to sit in login queues and you really don't even have to sort through massive amounts of bugs and performance problems (unless you're playing Assassin's Creed Unity).
World of Warcraft is one of the most popular games on the planet. This isn't like an expansion for EverQuest II where 3,000 more players might populate the servers for a couple months. Millions have purchased Warlords of Draenor as millions do any time WoW releases an expansion.
If anything, Blizzard's handling of the Diablo 3 launch disaster should show all of us that they're not interested in the consumer as much as they're interested in the dollars they can suck from us. They know there's no point in guarding against a DDoS attack (as those have occurred across several MMOs recently) or upgrading server infrastructure because in about a week or so, when the hype dies down, anger will subside and we'll continue to fork over our money to grind away like hamsters on a treadmill.
well since you mention EQ2, this whole thread just make me miss the good old days of expansion releases - EQ2 always had massive issues on release day, so would be on teamspeak all evening, with a slim to no chance getting in. So sitting here wonder if people just havent had enough expansion experience :P atleast EQ2 only once used the DDoS exuce, not to claim either companies lie about it, just SOE never said this is the reason.

Queues are bad. The dc's and excessive maintenance to fix the problems are frustrating, particularly for those of us that took off work to play.
