Her name is Princess, not pixy. And although she was definitely tougher than an average mob of her level, it never took 10 players to kill her. 2 or 3 at most, and could be soloed if you were a level or 2 above her. The toughest part was that she had the 2 bodyguards with her back in the day, which eventually was reduced to 1.
WoW catered to solo players from day one. To pretend that it didnt' is just revisionist history. Yes it caters to solo players more now than it did on launch, but it was still very very solo friendly.
Agreed.
I never bought WoW but did trial as long as 8 years ago and it was pretty solo play friendly back then too. The trial has a level 20 cap and I was there in less than a week without even as much as talking to anyone.
I played WoW for 3 month after launch for 2 years solidly and on and off for the next 2 years. I soloed my first character and duo'd my second (3rd and 4th were also solo). You only need to group for dungeons the rest you can do on your own. The only things that have changed is it's easier now, mounts you get lower and are a lot cheaper. A level 60 mount used to be almost impossible to afford. Anyone who thinks it was infinitely better back in the day should take off the rose tinted spectacles.
One of the many things that i liked about GW2, was that you didn't need to waste time looking for more people. People naturally congregate around the group content.
That ended up being a solo experience too. People would gather for a moment, nobody says a word, quest is done everyone leave in different directions.
... soloing solo content when they could be duoing them or quintdoing (new word!) them with people of every type of personality disorder... the ADHD "hurry the f**k up" types... the "baby is crying" constant afkers... the "dude your DPS sucks" recounters...
... sheesh how dare they when they could be grouped!

Tell me about it. While I was was rolling in the gold Pre-BC due to Skinning and Enchanting; coming up with the 400g train, and then 60g mount (I think those were the original prices) was tough without a tradeskill. I had enough gold to afford the riding epic riding skill and the mount, and still had enough gold to help pay for the skill/mount for some friends.

Why does no one ever talk about that? People act like WoW day 1 was completely centers around the solo player.
The Truth: you still needed a group to kill Hogger, one of the first bosses in the open world portion of the game. A tank to hold his damage, a caster or DPS to deal damage, and someone else to get the adds.
Yet people act like WoWs success came from being a 100% solo game, like it totes now. Back when I first played groups were a damn necessity to get that "extra content". Hell there was even that level 6 frost troll in the dwarf starting area, you know the one up on that mountain with the bloody bones out in front of the cave. Unless you were way higher level you absolutely could not solo that thing, and the quest reward was awesome just for getting a couple other adventurers together to kill it.
Don't get me wrong, WoWs mega-success came from the continued solo-aimed developement, but it still reached the number 1 spot with a hefty amount of group content. And again it wasnt "forced" it was always out in the deep woods or In a dark cave somewhere waiting for someone to accept the danger and challenge it. That's what it really was, it was a challenge, that felt rewarding if you accepts it.
You seem to forget that regardless of group content at launch it was still light years more casual and solo friendly then every alternative at the time. So though it may seem group focused to us now it wasn't even remotely so back then. not to mention as the game got more casual subs increased until Cataclysm and beyond.

i always..always end up writing "pixy the princess pig" and also 1st time i encountered her i perfectly remember, i was level 7 and there were about 12 of us who had very hard time killing her, 5 players including me died, she was a boss mob, indeed a badass boss back then. it was horrible, glad those days are gone.

Good, ol' Hogger. :-) And many elite zones with elite mobs in middle of normal. However there is no other way than make game solo friendly. At that time was actually no problem to find help in any zone a lot of players willing to help. But with so many expansions and wast new areas even having more subs can not compensate. Would not be fun to wait 1 hour for Hogger to find somebody there on same quest or always bothering guildies. Good combination is to have QUESTING solo friendly game which imo is a must, but have also a lot of instances who wish. My work schedule does not permit me a lot of planning when i will be able to play so I want to be able to play and enjoy at any moment I have time. And for sure was not fun LFG-ing for WEEKS(!) to get into instance for warlock mount quest. That was nightmare. At the end purchased regular mount and got gratis warlocks when becomed available. I also always deeply hated doing good quest chain that ended with elite boss requiring a group. That was never available when i had time to play. Very frustrating.
So i'm absolutely pro solo content when questing. Or to have group but not mondatory to continue some chain.

because it was? there was actually far less to do as a group in vanilla than there was in any expansion after it. the only thing vanilla had that isn't currently in game (and this is just my personal opinion) is good open world pvp.
wow has slowly gotten easier since vanilla but it's always been a solo-centric mmo.
