I dont get the math though, if 3.3 million people bought WoD and that pushed the subs over 10 mil, does that mean that all the rest, 7,5 million subs are still playing Pandaria? I mean, if there's 3.3 million WoD players making the total over 10 mil subs, the rest have to be in Pandaria still, or wut?
I am sure article is talking about the resubs as in new and returning players.
It was sales at launch day. The rest, me included had already paid for the expansion or subs.
edit
and gratz to Blizz, its a nice expansion.
At their last investor meeting, Activision-Blizzard said they'd sold 600k -- that was in October, I think, which means more before actual launch day + the 3.3 sold ON launch day, that pushes it well over 4M. Given WoW was holding around 6.5M subscriptions, that's pretty impressive.
Oh right, I thought Activision had sold 3,3 mil copies of WoD in total at launch day, but if it means 3,3 mil just in the day then we can only guess on the grand total, makes sense then.

Launch day sales figures include everything up to that day. They did not sell 3.3 million copies in a single day.
Everything is more standardized including crafting. On rails experience even more so the next step would be auto nav. But I'm liking the lore so it's interesting from that point of view and I'm quite sure alot of others would feel the same despite the trivalized gameplay.

With all positive reviews from people who actually playing game and thanks to "Wow killers 2014", numbers will only increase, I'm afraid.
Tbh I havent played much WOD since Im still enjoying ArcheAge. Im subbed at both games but I will have to opt by one MMO. Finding it to damn hard to abandon my hard earned lands, the legit way.
From what I have heard the expansion is the best since Wrath of the Liche King and I think WoW is still the benchmark for mmos even if it is years past its best . The thing is its the lower level content that is pretty awful and lacking challenge now so people going back now with the instant level 90s can experience the harder expansion content .
I thought this would bring some people back but I'm surprised they have managed to get it up above 10 million again . I know a lot of people that are enjoying it but I wont be back myself because it would mean having to buy MoP as well as WoD and I have zero intention of ever doing that .
I know a few people that have rejoined to play this expansion and they are enjoying it but these are the days of the mmo nomad people flit from one game to another and once they have gone through all the content most will move onto other games if Blizzard don't put out more regular patches and updates . Perhaps Blizzard have finally recognized they have to up their game and that they have made huge errors of judgement within the last few years with Cata and MOP .
World of Warcraft's previous expansion pack, Mists of Pandaria, also saw a subscription increase over 10 million in 2012, although from a much closer 9.1 million prior to its launch. World of Warcraft's peak for subscribers remains 12 million back in 2010.
Proof that wow is the best and still is - Wow is the best mmorpg of all time. Congratulations WoW and to all of the wow community for being better than the rest.

....and it will still have a higher population than GW2, AOC, TSW, and TESO combined.

haven't played WOW in years and this expac pulled me right back in.
I rate the following expansions as..
WOTLK
WOD
BC
MOP
Cata
I am glad to be back so many years.
Agree for the first on list :-), but for the rest for me they were all great expansions, every single having something unique. Long live quee...., ehkm, gorilla. :-)
WoW is always like this though, numbers go up and then they go down after content is cleared, then up again after an update and down again a month later. Sure they'll still be the biggest MMORPG around but numbers will always shift around.

I think you're getting popularity and quality confused. Sure it's proof that the game is popular, but the best, not so much. McDonald's is probably the most popular restaurant, does it mean it's the best? However, I think your comment is meant to be sarcastic, in which case, I'd agree.

Mc donald is popular because it is cheap. That is it. Is WOW cheap?
And who says popularity and quality can not go hand in hand? and if WOW is not quality than what is? even the most die hard haters would tell you that WOW is one hell of a polished and quality game.
2) I don't pay attention to sub numbers because they lump in the people that pay monthly with those that don't purchase the game and pay by the hour in the East. And they never separate them when giving numbers and so you can't tell what the real trends are in the US or Europe.

there is no doubt blizzard have a good business in this game, ker ching!
it is a pity that the game itself is terrible (imo) though but if people enjoy it that is great for them

good news for blizzard
MOP also made WOW rise to over 10 million subs but with less sales (2.7 m in first week)

For some reason I bet you think its "special" when they lose subs during lull before an xpac though...right?
