I haven't seen any attributes where one could allocate points.

I'm having no problems with mouse and keyboard. At all.

    others say it's unplayable.

I strongly suspect this has more to do with what one wanted/expected and that they are trying to play "one way" where the game is really designed to be played "another way".

This is not to say it's perfect. There is, for warrior, a slight rooting while you finish your attack. I've gotten used to this. Especially since I discovered that if you hold down "W" while you are attacking you will move (either slightly or by making small "leaps") to continually engage your target.

I have found this with two handed warrior, posted my discovery and another player had discovered the same thing with sword and board warrior. However, he noted that dual wielding rogue has issues sticking with the target.

    Hope that helps.

There are various skill trees where you can put points.

Some skills  are active and some passive. Some skills allow you to put an additional point into them to make them more effective.

You have various trees and it seems you can take advantage of all of them depending on how many points you have.

I've heard of specializations once you reach a certain level but since I keep restarting the game with a different character I have yet to experience these.

It's true that you cannot allocate stats like cunning, dexterity etc. These are updated automatically.  The combat abilities passive and active are coming in trees and you can pick as you like. I like the description of abilities it gives you for example exact amount of damage in percent of weapon damage so it makes it desirable to get as good weapon as possible.

Later in the game you are getting three quests for the specialization from trainers in Skyhold.

You can respec your abilities whenever you want, which is a cool thing.

Actually you CAN allocate points to diffrent stats but not in the way it's usually done...In each PASSIVE skill that you choose there is ALSO a diffrent stat that will go up by +3...So not automatically

Naturally it's just a bit more secure to making the wrong choices, but since you can buy a re spec I doubt anyone would get any problems anyway..

I think, as thark pointed out, you can update your stats but not in the typical way.

As for your question, I don't think it's about limiting but about making more meaningful choices.

Adding +1 for the sake of adding +1 is pretty meaningless.

Additionally, I've seen role playing games that have what seems like "zilliiions" of places to add +1's but the overview of it all seems tedious.

I'm a firm believer in leveling and advancement but I do tend to cringe at games where it's just lists of places to put points.

    I agree.

Character development and advancement is an integral part of RPGs. But the only important things are that you can make meaningful choices and that you can feel the affects of the advancement on how the game plays. How that happens are just details and those details can happen in a thousand different ways.

Other than those two things, everything is optional: stat names, stat numbers, levels... all optional. The differences in how games handle advancement is actually one of the things about new RPGs I enjoy the most: learning and using new systems is a big part of it for me,

DA-I has got the essentials in spades. You can definitely shape your character and feel the changes.

Before you buy just be aware that the game has technical problems, Crashing for many people, very low fps and other problems, hopefully they come out with a patch soon

Well the truth is that games evolve. If you want the original DAO experience then you need to follow Pillars of Eternity and other games that are clearly molded after the BG series, like DAO was. Once you learn the controls, using a M&KB is no issue at all. I actually like the hybrid action/tactical system. The combat has a lot of weight to it. You don't feel like your slicing through a piece of paper like in Skyrim. You hear and feel the loud bass THUD when you slam that 2H weapon down. When a mage casts certain fire spells, you get a true firestorm. As someone who has played all the RPGs going back to the 80s, I can honestly say that this is my new favorite SP/MP RPG and only TW3 has a shot to dethrone it.
