How close would i be with this list, for November 2014
1) WoW
2) ESO
3) GW2
4) SWTOR
5) FFXIV
6) RIFT
Would this be far off the truth, ... not counting in archeage because its still in its release population
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Comments
1- World of Warcraft
2- Final Fantasy XIV
3- Star Wars The Old Republic
4- Guild Wars 2
5- Eve Online
I think the others aren't even close.
Raptr is the closest you can get to most played MMO's in the west, and not counting the game that was released within 3 months the lists have been been.
1. WoW
2-4. Swtor, FF14, GW2 (position depending if they just launched some new content.)
ESO and Wildstar was second around its release, but after a few months they dropped, and for october Archeage was second and its likely it will drop in popularity as well.
WoW and all others in a distant second
AA is dying so badly so fast it isn't even relevant anyway
Since you're limiting the comparison to the Western world it wouldn't surprise me if FFXIV was below Rift.
Half of the playerbase is from Japan. Or today it may even be closer to 33% Japan / 33% China / 33% NA+EU.
Pretty sure the OP is talking about MMORPG's, since every game he listed is one. If the thread was about the most played MOBA's, then yes, LoL would be top.
1) WoW
2) Everyone else combined
But he then went on to list only MMORPG's. So we can make a fairly logical conclusion that he specifically intended to talk about MMORPG's. But I see that it didn't take you very long to get back to your usual redundant discussion topic.
I tend to agree with this estimate, and the statement following them. I think its particularly telling that none of the others have released player figures, whether that is a legal requirement or not, its such a negative publicity point that to not do so, means that it would probably be even worse in terms of negative publicity if they did
a multiplayer online game is not the same as a MMO, i don't know why people keep trying to lump moba's in as part of the MMO genre, when their clearly not, it just seems like a poorly constructed effort to confuse an already 'muddy' issue.
Everyone else combined have more people playing than WoW, whats your point?
The top 5 will be:
1) WoW
2) SWTOR (12xp bonus + Revan xpac)
3) FFXIV
4) ESO
5) Archeage
My guess would be:
1) WoW
2) SWTOR
3) Archeage
4) Wizard 101
5) ESO or FF XIV
I wouldn't put Eve on that list.
Multi-boxing is a common practice.
Whatever you think the population is divide that number by a third.
I have 3 accounts I play at the same time myself and I am one of the space poor players.
What is a Massive Multi-player Online?????
This is all pure speculation only the companies like NC Soft, Blizzard, EA and others who are compelled in their public reports to reveal earnings and such can you trust any numbers they put up. Stuff made up by untrusted data should not be considered as evidence of anything. At best this thread will provide some fun times as each game fan comes with their own list.
1.wow
2.swtor
3:gw2
4:eso
The rest could be in any order I would think, it's almost impossible to say for sure since none have given up to date numbers, or any numbers at all.
The clue is in the 'Massive' whereas Multiplayer online might be only 50 or 60 concurrent players, Massively Multiplayer is usually in the 100's+ if not 1000's which is totally beyond the capabilities, if not scope of a Moba.
That Moba's are included in the games here on this forum it is because the scope of the forum has now expanded to include more than just MMO's, which some might find confusing perhaps?
I was just pointing out that those 3 words all describe something but that the subject is missing because typing a g at the end apparently is extremely hard and taxing on people.
You just missed it.
I should have been more clear:
1) All eastern MMOs combined
2) WoW
3) All other western MMOs combined
But the OP asked about western MMOs so my original list of two still stands...
First question is why the debate should be limited this to "western world" - which makes speculation far harder.
And how should "most played" be measured? Bioware, for example, announced that SWTOR has 1M unique players in a month. This could be 1M players spending 1 day in the game = 1M days played. Probably isn't but what if it is would SWTOR be "more played" than a game that had 50k people playing every day for 30 days? Are we counting days played or unique players? It is very easy to download a f2p game, create an account - making you a unique player - and then decide yuk this is not for you.
That said ny take would be:
1.WoW. Even allowing for non-western players. There are other games that would be number 1 depending on your definition of mmo. The landscape has changed but without going down that path number 1: WoW.
2 & 3. SWTOR and GW2.
GW2. In the west GW2 sold the odd million more at launch (bar WoW) than any of the other games. And it is still selling. Cash shop income is flat but that is no guide - see SWTOR.
SWTOR. Again cash shop income well down on 12 months ago - which simply shows why it is no guide since they have announced 1M players in a month again. (They just spend less, maybe play less etc).
4-6. Rift, FFXIV, TESO. Any order.
Very hard to know what Rift is doing. It is f2p. It is an old game. Is being promoted with new content etc.
FFXIV has a Japanese angle. Does this count as western? If yes it could be ahead of TESO if not maybe not. I could see either or both of them being ahead of Rift because they are newer games. We have some numbers - 2M+ total but only 500k or whatever new since AAR and we can assume some of those have left in the last year as new games launch.
TESO. Maybe it will have 20M subs by the end of the year Nah. We don't know but nothing Zenimax have said suggests it garnered huge numbers. If the early guesstimates of sales etc. were accurate then 500k+ over 6 months ago. And as with FFXIV (and every other game) people move on.
AHEM....
I believe that Farmville can be counted by the same classifications so its #1 at 80 million
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/20/farmville-community-surpasses-80-million-players/
The biggest number I could find for LoL was 67 million
http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2014/01/27/riots-league-of-legends-reveals-astonishing-27-million-daily-players-67-million-monthly/
Both these numbers are out of date
OP: I know you meant MMORPG in spirit
