WOW vanilla: - right place, right time, right product.
Ya WoW was amazing back then though I wouldn't raid again now like I did.
Star wars Galaxies - tie with WoW pre bad changes and all that stuff.
My vote goes to ESO now until Star Citizen or EQ Next or any other amazing well-rounded sandbox
Special mention to Planetside2, the development kind of struggle because they went f2p from day one and It ain't a simple game but there's none other like it. After getting into it other FPSs feel blank.
Wow was great once upon a time. Probably the best back then.
As for now, I think there are probably better ones out there but just with less following because wow got lucky with its timing.
I think next year will change everything though since a load of next gen mmos are comoing out and I think wow wont be able to compete.
Ive already seen a couple of my friend drop their wow subs even after wod. It seems like it gets shorter every year but if I had to say the most successful mmo rpg of all time, I would say wow.
If I had to say the best mmo rpg in 2009, Id say wow.
If I had to say the best today, I would probably think most mmos are better but don't have as many subs cuz wow fans have carried over from its start.
1) XI: Preabysea, was a much better EQ to me. Was a game you could play 10hrs a week or 60hrs a week for 8yrs strait and never run out of things to do. Yea was grindy and oldschool but it was a master peice.
2) EQ1, the basis for WoW enough said. Was the king of its time.
3) WoW: Pre-Cata, Was a great game droped down on my list due to cartoony graphics. Great guild based game though.
4) FFXIV (A subpar WoW) Might put WoW-WoD here as well.. need to experiance endgame first playing it casually atm alot of +s and -s in the new wow game.
5) WoW: Cata/Panda land
6) Rift Pre-Cashshop (started strong but game went downhill after the conversion to f2p)
7) EQ2 & Linage 2 I guess would be a close here
8) FFXI: Current (Shadow of its former self, SE killed the game)
9) Rift current and Aion I would put here. Both games fail to meet the potential they could of been
10) Archeage... Expected this to be good. Original Alpha was the most fun I had in whie, until XL and Trion killed it.
11) GW2... The whole concept of no trinity and free for all everything is just blah for longevity.
12) SWToR... Solo player mmo
13) ESO... SEE 11 (Skyrim with co-op would of been better)
MMOs are on a horrible downward slop in my eyes. I guess I am just not growing up with the rest of the genre, I still have alot of free time and the games are made for casual playtime only now.
Trions incompretence + plex dupe abuse + pay to win + 30 hours maintenance on weekend + ...

No 1 must be:
Archage
And no 2
Well Archage ofc
and finally...
No 3...
It has to be Archage!!!
Yeeeeey!

It would have been fun to play an MMO with ES theme... something like Skyrim Online, that would have been fun!
Who am I to object this? :-) Everyone has right to think as he wish, for many this can be still Pacman, Prince of Persia (2D) or Hello Kitty. :-)
I do not have any doubt this is Wow, followed by SWTOR, then .... well then for long nothing and then not sure, Rift, AOC, .... and few others.
Why? Because Wow and Swtor are simply most polished, functional, ... all-inclusive packages ever created. Incredible feeling for combat, constant and quality updates, expansion packs, very few bugs (ok, Wod was first expansion being somehow turbolent, being on BDF I did not have wait times problems, for the rest nothing really cripling), .... Top of the top.
The best MMO ever made is WoW, it changed the entire genre and made it mainstream. If not for WoW most of the other titles would not exist or would of had tiny budgets.
No other MMO has had anything like the impact WoW had, most of the people that come to this site would of never played an mmo if not for what WoW did.
The best MMORPG ever created is the one you've been playing for over a decade.

WoW vanilla, unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to try SWG before NGE - from what I read on forums it sounds great
WOW
No particular order as both cater to a different crowd. Wow has become solo friendly to the point of being borderline anti-social.
EVE actually has a more harsh life for the solo player so the whole "massive multiplayer" is better represented in EVE.

That's already ending now though so its ok.
WoW. Duh.
Wow / TBC - I hope to add WOD to this list going to buy it later
SWG - I hope the Repopulation feels this huge void I have had since the NGE
EQ - I loved EQ until the POP expansion.
My favorite type of ironic typo.
I see a lot of Kids replying here..hehe. It;s ok, they don't know any better.
When you put the word "ever" in a topic and you are under the age of 25, you have no clue.
Meridian 59 (1996)
Ultima Online(1997)
Everquest 1 (1999)
Best 3 MMOs ever made. No contest.
FYI: Without Everquest, WoW would not exist today.

If I just said it based on nostalgia for the game and nice memories I would say early years of Lineage 2, up to C4 and Prologue.
Best of times!
EvE Online

i made a dozen friends that i later met in real life, still in contact with many of them
