It all depends on what you like really. Do you look for a MMORPG with a SciFi theme, fantasy theme, mystery theme? Scifi you might like SWToR or if you are more into spaceships it will be EVE, also if you like to do more then just fighting EVE might be your go to place.
Do you like fantasy then you got a whole bunch of MMORPG's that might fit what you like. You say you think GW2 is the best one out there. True next gen and full of inovation? What would be true next gen? I wouldn't say GW2 is next gen at all. Its pretty much like any other MMORPG only difference is that you don't have to run to a NPC and back again to get quests. You kill the mobs at a location and get a PM that your quest is over. Wauw such impresive inovation, really next gen. The combat is also like others and some done it even better and taking it to the next step. However that is my personal opinion so you can see that no one can really awsner the question. GW2 fans will say it truelly is the next step, others will say its not.
I don't really think there is a best MMORPG, cause there are so many different ones that will be the best if that is what you look for in a MMORPG. People always want to compare these days. SWToR would be a fail cause its to much like WoW. Sure, mechanic wise it is, but it aims for people who like Star Wars and a SciFi theme. It doesn't focus on the WoW players. ESO is a fantasy theme, but that still doesn't make it the same like WoW or GW2.
Just play the game you think will suit you best. Not because its next gen or inovative. What do those words mean these days in the game industry anyway? Sorry but the game industry of today is populated by noobs with no knowledge about games. I was born in the 80's, i been playing games since the 80's. I have to hear how inovative things are. Good example, CoD Ghost..we got fish that swim away from you. It was one of their focus points in the trailers about how next gen that shooter was gonna be.....except...fish already swam away from you in Mario 64. The terms are used so easy and every game that comes out has the same BS lines in its advertisment "Never seen before game mechanics" execpt in all other games, "The AI is amazing, next stept in gaming history" except the AI in FEAR is still one of the best to date, no other shooter or anywhere done it better yet that used these advertisement lines. In the MMORPG genre "players can do what they want for the first time" no they don't, you could do that in MMORPG's 15 years ago already, and even better then the so called sandbox games of today who are mostly just wannabe sandbox games with to much themepark in them still.
Really just play what you wanna play. Don't play a game cause someone says its the best. Cause other people will say any other game is the best. If GW2 seems appealing to you, then play that.
I don't raid or PvP. Maybe I'm missing out on the purpose of MMOs, but I just don't like what happens to people when they get serious about raiding or PvP. Playing the game turns into a job. I prefer to keep it low-key, soloing or doing dungeons with random strangers.
If you play MMOs the way I do -- I don't think you can justify paying a subscription, so WoW, Wildstar, ESO etc. are out. My current favorite is Neverwinter Online. It has good gameplay and a friendly business model -- all content is free. Marvel Heroes is also an excellent game, although not quite as deep. I haven't tried GW2. I have played LOTRO, SWTOR, and the Secret World, and I don't think the rich story in those games makes up for the gameplay.
Hey! In my opinion it's - World of Warcraft, with its new Warlords of Draenor expansion. I'm having a blast at the moment, the zones, quests and storyline overall is insanely well implemented! It even gives me a goosebumps...
None of the MMOs (ESO, WS, FFXIV at the moment try to move the genre forward and stay with the classic formula to make the game more accessible. Weirdly, MMOs became more solo-oriented while sologame became more "social" with online interactions, to the point where you can hardly call the current MMOs "massively".
I'm still waiting for what's coming in 2015 (Black Desert, Everquest, Blade & Soul, Bless, Camelot Unchained, ...). I'm trying not to overhype myself, but I'm happy to see that developpers try to bring more strong player-interactions n MMOs.
Right now I only find myself playing 3. These games I have played and come back to after taking a break. Secret World, Guild Wars 1 and 2; no other mmo's have kept my interest.
its the only mmo that seems to have any kind of real ambition while other mmos are generally
very similar, eve pushes the limits of content, originality and visual fidelity.
I think its the best because its limitless.
while with other mmo's, you reach the level cap, spam the same content over and over until your braindead,
and then have nothing left to do other than do the same thing with an alt.
Every login is different in eve and its complexity which everyone knows is fun to learn rather than frustrating.
games can become stale when you know eveything, while discovering things and learning game mechanics is fun.
after playing games like wow for many years, you realise its just going to be the same copy/paste format every expansion, and nothing ever truly meaningful gets introduced.
there is no kind of life in some games like wow either. People dont talk to each other and there is no RPG in the ga,e anymore.
While eve online has the perfect basis for this.
not only that but ccp are a very nice, open and generous company and while somewhat smaller than other mmo developers, seem to push out far more interesting, meaningful and rich updates/expansions to the game.
As said, we have no way to judge the population of ESO since we have no official numbers, and the megaserver tricks the layer into thinking there are always players.
I don't think the game is dying, but in my opinion, the population is slightly declining. There are certainly not more than 1 million players or we'd know it.
The best MMORPG is Eve Online. It's the only game in the genre that really encompasses everything that a MMORPG should be and does it extremely well.
Sadly, I myself can't get into the entire spaceships thing, so for me, my personal favorite at the moment is Final Fantasy XIV. It's your standard themepark, certainly, but it does it quite well, while also managing to add lots of fun, robust systems like their crafting, gathering, housing, and chocobo training. The main story is fun, though not groundbreaking, but for the storytelling part, Hildibrand and company steal the show.
EQ, DAoC, WoW, EQ2, LoTRo, DDO, DCuO, Rift, SWTOR, TSW, GW2 Neverwinter and ESO all have quallities that set them appart...
If you combined the best features of these 13 games in a wise manner and threw them into a steampunk fantasy setting, you would have the best MMO around...
If i had to choose from the list above, i think i would go for Lotro, it has some remarkable mechanics, great stories, the best communities and my favourite class of them all (warden). Its the one game where i keep feeling at home every time i return to it..
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Originally posted by bcbully ESO. Over the next 2 years it will be ESO, WoW and everything else. I honestly believe ESO's NA and EU population will eclipse WoW's during this time frame.
Lol. Another great post by BCbully.
There's actually no hard evidence that ESO's population is really doing well or poorly right now, Zenimax still hasn't released official subscription numbers, which generally would indicate they are under-performing at this point.
If it was really something they were proud of, they'd be shouting it from the rooftops.
Its a great game, and i think Bully might even be right about it, if they add the abbility to play really evil characters, and a worl reacting on that, and keep pushing content after console release, it is the game to go to in the future...currently its fun... and i am still playing it off and on

Responding to the OP's first two posts in this thread; the answer for me hasn't changed in over 11 years. It's in my signature.

Cop out, but I'm going to say World of Warcraft. GW2 would get my next vote followed by SWTOR. There are so many to choose from and I hate to single one out at being the best, but for the money WoW still holds the most polished content imho.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
I'm currently playing The Repopulation early access (Alpha 4). It is by far the best MMORPG I have ever played. It's has the story line feel of Anarchy Online having 3 factions (1 Police State-like faction, 1 Rebel-like faction and 1 Neutral Faction) and the sandbox/gameplay feel like pre-CU SWG and UO. It uses the HERO engine and has decent graphics on both low and high settings. The game could use more voice-overs for quests (but it's still in Alpha), but beyond that it has great PvE, PvP, Crafting and RP features. It truly is a game for all play-styles. You can buy early access on STEAM now. Check it out.
When the Repopulation servers are down, I play SWTOR or TSW, which are by far the two best games in the already released genre IMO.

I can only say what's best for me, and that is SoA and ESO.
in terms of numbers and polish WoW
In terms of my personal opinion/preference WoW and GW2.
I would count ESO only if ZoS removes the crap targeting from the combat.

i my opinion the best MMORPG at is the EVE online, it has great depth, in terms of crafting/pvp/economy and even role play !
i dont consider WoW as MMORPG, i see it only as a massively themepark without any part of RPG there ...
but my favorite mmorpg at the moment is GW2, as a casual gamer ...
None.

ArcheAge.
The only current fantasy mmo that give the feel of playing in a living world.
Eve online.

Right now for me nothing.
Currently waiting for EQ Next and Albion Online.
I'm switching to sandbox type games.
I am sick of the whole grind to end game just to raid type games.
Best? Depends on which angle you're talking from.
If it's sheer number of subs alone, WoW would be "the best"
If we're talking about consistent staying power and proven community outside of the WoW-beast, then it would probably be EVE
If we're talking about strong up-and-comer with great direction and growing community, it would probably be ESO
Otherwise... clearly it's Destiny durrrr

I'd say EVE. Since EQ 1 went down the tubes, it's the only one left.
I don't hold with the idea that Vanilla WoW was good. Better than the current iteration, sure, but not good.
