    The F?

Star Citizen isn't even done yet and they're working on a second MMO?

This does not bode well for either game. Kudos to them if they manage to pull it off successfully, but this has disaster written all over it. It's easy enough for a studio to fail attempting just one MMO. I don't think any have tried to do 2 right out the gate. That just sounds,.... idiotic.

Archeage's housing isn't tied to real money.

Aside from that (major) obstacle do like the setting they're going for. It's not one you find easily among the existing MMOs.

Exactly my thought. Looking at this it sounds like a virtual real estate scam similar to Greed Monger. They are not even trying to hide the fact that they are going to milk the players as long as possible:

AFAIK, Ilfonic only did the combat system for Star Citizen, as a sub contractor. Don't think they are involved in the rest of SC beyond that.

They want every player-owned house to be a landmark and important part of the city scenery, each designed and placed by their professional graphics artists, for the sake of immersion, so maybe a player's house will not be destroyed too easily.

They've also said that safety of a house against a burglar or small groups of intruders will depend on such things as the city's overall economic situation, placement and routines of NPC guards deployed by players who are citizens of the city. The value of real estate will depend on how peaceful or criminal the environment around the house is, which will depend on the city's karma (good or evil) and overall economic wealth or city's resources.

2 more years of development.  Literally nothing that is listed as a feature of their game is set in stone at this point.  Their high level systems will be set, as they are basically features that the game wants to fill a market void of.

This is the perfect time to get in and provide feedback on features if you are interested in the game.  But telling them things like "don't make it action combat", "the game is too dark", "don't make it a fantasy game" are going to fall on deaf ears.  That is just the game they are making, and there is nothing wrong with it.  If you don't like those things, the game will not be for you, and you can quietly go about your day.

Personally, I'll reserve judgment until something more concrete has come out.  In the meantime, I'll just play the game I like right now.  Looks like I have at least 2 more years in which to make a decision.

Right now they are focusing on building the housing system, so it is obvious that they will try to get initial funding for the game through real estate sales.

When the game launches, they will also sell "SP" (standing points) for real money. Players will be able to get SP either by paying or by playing the game. At this early stage devs have mentioned that SP will be used to advance one's status in the game, complete some stories or quests or buy some god blessings for crafting or protection.

The difference between pay-to-play and free-to-play server will be mainly in the presence or absence of the live storytelling team.

I'm going to guess it won't be all that many.

It is not entirely clear what devs are planning but judging by some of their posts on the game's forum it might be something similar to what will happen to ships in Star Citizen. A player who buys a house will have to buy some kind of insurance and if an insured house is destroyed, the insurance will help to get new real estate in another place.

Devs have also mentioned  that players will be able to sell real estate to other players with real money. The real money value of real estate can increase or decrease depending on different factors inside the game.

Since their main focus is on immersion, role-playing, and storytelling, real estate will be pre-designed by their graphics designers and artists. Players will be able to modify their houses with house kits, e.g. replacing an ordinary room with a chimney with a forge.

I wouldn't touch this game with a ten foot MMO!    My wallet is not fat enough.  And griefing is not high on the list of features I want in a game.

Thats a serious waste of some pretty nice graphics though, if those screenshots are to be believed.

You will have lost them by saying 'Next-Gen.'  Many of the community love to pick apart games/people who claim that something is 'Next-Gen.'

Illfonic, what have they done before?

Are they adequately funded to make a AAA game?

    Issues are already clear.

Developer team does not have enough money to finish the game:

They want you to buy Ships, Houses and Founders packages so they can finish the game:

If this doesn't set off enough warning bells in your head, you should let another person manage your money, because one day you are going to get scammed for a lot of money.

This reads like some of those email scams from a Nigerian Prince who needs just a bit more money to get his monet from their bank account and in return you will get this and that.....lots of promises,...all you need to do....is open your wallet......

    How gullible are you.

    More warning bells.

In an interview they compared their payment model to online hookers.

I wish I was making this up.

I was so hoping Star Citizen wasn't starting a "thing"... but it looks like it is a "thing" now.

Illfonic do great work on star citizen though. But it remains t obe seen what kind of game this will be. Im not so fond of pay to win game. Freemium games and pay to win games tend to be more expensive for the player at the end of the day in my experience. The old subscription model is the one i like the best.

Maybe subscriptions with a twist, where you have credits representing one day of gaming that you spend when you actually play the game. That way people would feel they get their moneys worth.

Illfonic isnt scaring me with twitch based gameplay. As long as it wont be a mediveal call of duty, then it wont be for me. I like complexity.

Sites like Kickstarter should be more regulated yes. A few weeks ago, a site appeared with the next version of the STALKER game. With developers and information. The project lead was the directer of the first Stalker...Awesome.

    Looks really legitimate right.

    Nice graphics huh.

They use the Unreal 4 Engine!

Well, it's a scam site and scam project: http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2014/12/12/kickstarter-areal-scam-is-back-with-stalker-apocalypse-on-shady-new-crowdfunding-site/

Those same developers were on kickstarter trying to scam people, and now they're back on another site.

This will be very very ugly. Great game for psychos though.

Depends on the popularity of the game. After all the person that actually earned 1 million $ in SecondLife did so through real estate trading iirc.

The question is how important for so called 'full game experience' those will be and if there, at any point, will be a moment when you have to pay for a ship/house on a pay-to-play server to remain competitive.

Yeah. "Stunning" is one word for the partially dismembered and bloody naked woman on a table in one of their "Early Housing Screenshots"... but a few other words also come to mind.

Good ideas. They need to 1) Implement them well to prevent rampant griefing 2) POLISH. Both 1 and 2 are the reasons why only EVE is a good sandbox nowadays.

Looks like another hyper-active action combat grief engine with some pretty graphics.  I'm pretty sure I'll pass.

Well first of all those screenshots look pretty amazing, too good to be true.I think they are banking on SC success simply selling virtual ships.I see more detail and effort in those shots than anything SC has done on their ships.

Problem here is i see it being all instanced, you cannot have high detail like that in an open world, hence why you don't actually see any open windows just the fake drop light coming through the stained glass.I guess was unfair to use the term fake since there is no real lighting in any game lmao.

BTW SOE has been doing quite well with it's cash shops even though they have a small following, sort of reminds me again of SC.If you can make a ton more money off of fewer players,it is a win win, less overhead larger profit margin.

Do o i think it could succeed,my gut says no because gaming is like fashion and the real world,it is all about popularity. The market it is after is not untapped or niche as Sci space shooters are,so it has to compete head on with other fantasy games.I guess Horror meaning likely Vampires and such idk is a bit untapped but i also feel it would not be a huge seller.

My overall take is they are simply banking on Housing being very popular in ANY game, instance to afford the cost and structure of the game and gorgeous textures /visuals helps aid the eye candy and housing theme.I would assume they could also sell other ideas that people love, who knows maybe automobiles, even fashion could sell if it looks real good,i mean remember the craze we saw with Aion just because people could make their face look like anyone they wanted?

So point is popular ideas sell even if the overall game is not that great.
