Although I have been quite critical of the business model, the vision and the graphics and game play, I'm somewhat excited to put a few days into the game... Now that it counts for something.
It has been a tough sell to bring others into the game, and I'm hopeful that the game will progress and eventually catch up to where other MMOs in alpha stand.
Played: E&B, SWG, Eve, WoW, COH, WAR, POTBS, AOC, LOTRO, AUTO.A, AO, FE, TR, WWII, MWO, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, NWO, WoP, RUST, LIF, SOA, MORTAL, DFUW, AA, TF, PFO, ALBO, and many many others....
I'm interested in folks experience rather than their expectation, I'm realistic knowing where the game is in its life cycle so don't expect the same as others, year two of five is going to be an interesting experience and I /salute those pioneering the project, it's those I would like to hear from.

What does that all mean exactly? If you have time, maybe some pros and cons of actually gameplay from someone that's playing would be very helpful.
So far, it's been fun. I'm playing one toon as a PVE/gatherer, and leaving my Destiny's Twin character alone until much later in the game (when PvP is more developed and Paladins are in). So I have a 2d level Cleric running around killing stuff and gathering.
1. Graphics and combat animations are still really low end--long way to go in that.
2. Monster and enironment variety has a long way to go.
3. The challenge of building your character, and also matching that build to your equipment and slotted feats is enjoyable. I like understanding how I'm building my particular character from a wealth of options. It will be a challenge though for complete noobs--there are so many options it would be very easy to make choices that don't work with each other.
4. I'm getting my first recipe drops along with crafting materials, and that's fun. My settlement's people are all scattered around the map, but in a few days when we are like level 5 or so we will all run up to our settlement, and then I can give my items to buddies that want to craft. That's the fun part. That was kind of fun in Alpha, but since it wasn't permanent you are kinda like "meh."
5. That's the big difference. Testing in Alpha, when you know there will be a wipe, is work. It was rarely fun, and a lot of work. This is fun, because helping my settlmenet get crafting going, towers, better trainers etc. has stakes. That part is cool.
I took the plunge late afternoon and purchased the EE, from the few hours I have played I agree with everything you have said. I am also very pleased with my purchase and look forward to supporting the project and participating in its progression/development!
Have not installed yet due to the holiday... (gotta say strange time to launch..)
Two questions:
1. How is the population? Are we talking Dozens? Hundreds? Thousands?
2. Am I correctly reading the announcements to mean that I can not start my character for 29 days from launch, login, get backdated XP for main and DT characters, and have my subscription start on THAT day and now get backdated as well?
PS: Someone really has to sit these guys down and explain the concept of simplifying things for their customers. This whole set of hoops you have to jump through to setup your DT character seems very like the crazy Fulfillment procedures they had for the Kickstarter, Not to mention giving a mere 48 hours notice for launch on a holiday...

I can answer question 1, after creating my character I saw about 10 different people in the starter village so I would suggest its 100s rather than dozens or thousands. This is evidently going to be a slow burner but don't forget how early in production it is, for the majority I imagine it's a wait and see where as I personally love the concept, hence me now supporting!
Every town I've come across has had a handful of players, and traveling the vast expanses between towns, I've ran into several people. Given the size, scope, and the fact that not everyone spawns at the same town when they create a char, I'd say we are having a pretty healthy turn out.
Bluddwolf how many people are actively playing in EE from your guild and how many are actively playing from your settlement?
Your posts on the Paizo forums sound reasonable... if I decided to activate one of my accounts in a few weeks how would I go about seeking admission to Aragon?

We have an unquantifiable number at this time. I say that because there are too many unknowns at the moment. Our "guild" has over 70 members, but they are not all active in PFO at this time. When our settlement was competing in the land Rush, we took 9th place out of 33 with about 64 pledged settlers.
since EE is staggering enrollees, it is hard to tell in which month (1 or 2) most of our members / citizens will join during. Many of our other guild mates are not part of EE at all, but are prepared to join during OE.
There is also no incentive at this time to leave the starter towns. So, Aragon may be empty but many of it's citizens are in nearby Marchmont.
Also since EE, we have added 4 new members, so to give a an answer is a bit difficult. I believe is is safe to say we will have between 20 - 30 members active during EE, if GW can maintain our interest. If PFO really shapes up well, come OE, I imagine that 70ish number will be more accurate.
Played: E&B, SWG, Eve, WoW, COH, WAR, POTBS, AOC, LOTRO, AUTO.A, AO, FE, TR, WWII, MWO, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, NWO, WoP, RUST, LIF, SOA, MORTAL, DFUW, AA, TF, PFO, ALBO, and many many others....
After three weeks in (still having fun and playing daily) I would say there are between 750-1000 regular players, on and off during the day. Since there is only one server the population at any one time is still pretty low. The majority of the players are in the US, so the peak hours are probably 11PM-4AM GMT, give or take an hour. I represent Forgeholm, home of the Dwarves in the River Kingdoms, and we have a number of US players (15 or so regular), a couple in Puerto Rico, a couple in Russia, and at least one in Australia. We hope to get more Europeans onboard to stretch our coverage, but it will be a while (there are a few folks that pledged for the Kickstarter 2 years ago, but they have not signed in yet, and might have donated for the pdfs and minis only).
Getting to level 8 in a crafting specialty will burn about 27 days of XP gains. And there are 20 levels! So specialization is critical, and it means you must work with other players to create and higher level goods. We are still crafting Tier 1 gear, just now getting into Tier 2, and Tier 2 is where the crafting system will really start to shine.
There are a few things I'd like to see expanded in the crafting system. Some crafting skills are almost worthless, as the end product of say, Jeweler, are so low impact it seems a waste to invest any XPs in the skill. The paperdoll has your weapon, armor, implement (spell book, holy symbol, etc) and secondary weapon (cleric battle focus, mage's wand), but the slots for cloak, rings, shoes/boots, hat, do not have anything worthwhile to slot. I might change my tune later if I am mistaken about this, but no one is really advancing these peripheral skills in the early game.

The sub comes in after your EE package runs out, I have 3 months left. Cost of sub, I don't know, guess around the 15 dollar mark.
