Beamdog, the studio behind Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, has announced on its blog that a new game, "Project Y", is currently in development that will bridge the gap between Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition. In addition, the team will be revealing "Project: Beartrap" this summer, a completely new game from the ground up.
This year, the eagerly anticipated Adventure Y will finally navigate the dark underground caverns of development and venture out into the Sword Coast. We’ve mentioned before that Adventure Y will be an addition to the Baldur’s Gate line using the Infinity engine, bridging the gap between Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition. Keep an eye on the Beamblog in late spring for announcements regarding the content and release date of Adventure Y. We have an exciting release planned for this game, something bigger than we’ve ever done before. If you’re looking for more information on Adventure Y, check out these pictures which were mysteriously leaked to the forums.
The blog is coy about what Project: Beartrap is, though on some sites, the speculation is Baldur's Gate III. What do you think?

"bridging the gap between Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition."
Sounds cool. Count me in (even if I have only the BG: EE, not the second one)
Baldur's gate 1 & 2 are among my favourites of all time, but I was not impressed with enhanced editions. Very little new content was added, mostly just tweaking to run on modern hardware. Enhanced editions seem like half arsed rereleases with a few mods thrown in. BG graphics are 17 years old but apparently not worth "enhancing".
Not sure I have much confidence in beamdog being able to deliver Baldur's gate 3. Beamdog seems to be mostly distribution platform with a few overhauls of old games.
My concern is how much content there will be in the game. I played both originals but I don't remember the story enough to recall how much time was between the two stories or how much land was traveled from end of first to start of second. It just sounds like a short game/expansion type deal.
Wait and see though. I loved BG/IWD/NWN games.
They deny working on BGIII right there on the block. What leads you to assume that Project Beartrap is BGIII then?
They also deny working on *any* 5th edition game - but not any other edition or D&D per se (besides BG 1.5)
So it depends on how you define things. They *are* working on the third Baldur's Gate game after all, but not on the next numbered installment..
Doesn't mean they are not working on *another* BG (or IWD/NWN) game..
I'll wait to the day's end when the moon is high
And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll
Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde
And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore
All it seems like they are doing is piggy backing on the Baldur's Gate name and fame to sell copies of their "enhanced editions".
I did not consider it worth to buy their EEs (I still have the original BG 1+2 CDs from around a decade back that I got with the collector's pack by the way, as I like this saga that much) as those just seem like the same game with a few minor mods thrown into the mix. And as for bringing the game upto works with today's rigs, I already have the proper mods to run the games with 1600 x 900 resolution on my system with no stutter so I dont need any compatibility versions marketed as enhanced editions.
If this Project Y is simply an interlude that shows what the Bhallspawn PC encountered between BG1's finale and Irenicus' dungeon at the start of BG2, then it better be worth a full act or two and not a couple of maps strung together and then called an "edition" to sell copies. And if it is an expansion of sorts for BG1, then it should compete with BG2:ToB AND Watcher's Keep dungeon because that is where the bar is set at.

Now after release, repeating the very same words from back then would be like preaching to the choir on this site.
Second, it's a mass market product, I'm sure people who buy mass market PC games aren't all into modding so having a increased resolution that's playble and some online modes is perfectly acceptable for a rerelease.
My only problem has and always will be, the price. These EE should cost 10 dollars Max.
The news clearly states "other sites" are thinking BGIII. No opinion here yet, especially in light of the blog's statement that that's -not- what they're working on.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I played their BG1 EE... and if their additions are the quality to expect from this company thing I will certainly pass on anything that is their own creation as it was shallow and mediocre at best. This was seen in the new characters they introduced.
Like an above poster said, Beamdog is riding on the fame of past legacy titles where there own skills are left wanting.
However I would love to be proved wrong as I miss the games of BG/IWD era, to me it was the all time high point in computer gaming. Would love to see their style of gaming return.
I believe it was several years together, considering that in the Baldur's Gate original you have just become of age, so I think you were 18. In BG2 I am pretty certain you are in your 30's maybe 40's? It's been a while myself, but I always remember the story from BG1 all the way to ToB was a story of a complete life.
