Looks like the devs got so caught up in hyping their game, they forgot one crucial piece of info for everyone on the Early Access Release date - the $19.99 price tag.
Seriously, go through all the pre-release sites, Steam, and even here and you will see no where a mention of having to pay for Early Access. This seems like a pretty major oversight, considering the game is labeled "Free to Play" They remembered they wanted a Free to Play game, but *forgot* to tell people they had to pay for the Alpha test.

The price was announced a while ago. I certainly knew what it was going to be before today.
edit. In fact it was here on this site over a month ago:

You must be new to the steam early access thing, and there was a disclaimer about how you were paying for an unfinished product on the H1Z1 steam entry page before today so you might just be blind
I love all these "well no one told ME" complaints

― CD PROJEKT RED
You see the comments saying they didn't realize they had to pay for the game to play it today?
Yeah... these damn texting and tweeting youngsters got no reading skills.

I guess it is common knowledge now to be looking for actual cost when you see FREE..../sigh.Yes let's blame the gamer's for the LAME gimmick's ,let's ignore the lame publisher/developer.
That is the ridiculous sad state of gaming, everywhere we see FREE but nothing is FREE.
Early access old news, yes i guess it is and has been happening even before the FREE to play labeling system ,does not make it right though.
If SOE cannot respect the gamer and market their game appropriately, they get no respect from me.Call your game a CASH SHOP game and a PAY to enter early access game, quit bantering around the word FREE .That is what gets me,they are so easy and casual about tossing around the word free but never once will say pay to play or cash shop or rmt,it is because they know the true reality of their gimmick is to do nothing more than mislead people and misrepresent their product.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
actually it was you had to hit the link "READ MORE" to get all the details about early access been up there for awhile, just have to ..... read
I knew it wasn't going to be free due to a blurb mentioned on a site about paying for it. Any of you whiners care to copy and paste the actual WEB SITE link that shows the price prior to January 15th? Reddit is not an official forum for any company, let alone Sony. There is and was actually no official announcement on a Sony sponsored site such as H1Z1.com about the cost of Early Access. There was nothing on Steam... the vendor of the game, about the cost of the Early Access.
Anyone doing any normal research, a normal person would do before buying a game had no clue what this game would cost, when it would cost, or if it would cost. The only official word on the cost of this game was "Free to Play" on both the H1Z1 site and on Steam.
12/8/14 - The site you are on and posting to that no info was given....

6/6/14 but no clue when they updated it.

Reddit is the official forum, was the 13th user to sub to it actually and pretty sure the $19.99 price was given within the first month if not less of its announcement. Can't remember if it was on Reddit directly or one of the first streams, but wasn't a secret.
Edit: Found "official" comment from Smed himself back in April.

You'll also have all the information you need when you start Early Access for $19.99.
While they did just create official official forums here:
https://forums.station.sony.com/h1z1/index.php?threads/welcome-to-the-h1z1-forums.13/#post-13
It says:
We maintain a large portion of our 1-on-1 conversations over on our Reddit page. If you have an awesome suggestion for H1Z1, that would be your destination to get it in front of us.
We will be using the forums here on H1Z1.com mainly as a service tool
Here's someone asking 5 months ago why it would cost $19.99, lets assume they didn't pull the number out of the air.

Not sure the issue or surprise that they are charging for EA. Don't know of any EA that are free.
H1Z1 will be F2P at launch. Just not EA's launch.
H1Z1 site at one time only had 1 link to Reddit. Has been recently totally remade though, but price and what not was also announced at the same time.
I guess I get your "normal" person POV, but EA's aren't exactly for "normal" people. $20 is pretty insignificant and anyone looking to play/buy a game shouldn't be too surprised.
Could you provide links to the site you learned about the game? Bet I can find a link with the price in there for you. Or if you heard it from a friend, maybe we can ask them if they knew?
Provided that you know how to read and read every line not just every 4th line, one must have lived alone in a cave without internet access to not find or hear about payable early access before.
But that's just how I feel.
Well consider it a learning experience.. Now you guys know Steam's "Early Access" costs money, which is nice way for devs to raise some capital to develop the game more, because these things are not free to develop even if you expect them to be free to play.. unless the game is something that looks like a high schooler dev'd it
You what the moment they said there would be early access they said it would have a cost and i think $19.99 was mentioned back last year as when they first announced it.
