For those wondering...

https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/105801626-General-Guild-Wars-2-Heart-of-Thorns-Questions

Q: Is the expansion “buy to play”?

A: Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns is a paid expansion to Guild Wars 2, but once you buy it, there are no subscription fees. This means that you can continue playing and access future updates for Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns with no subscription fee.

Q: Do I have to own Guild Wars 2 to play the expansion?

A: Yes. Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns is an expansion to Guild Wars 2 and not a stand-alone campaign, and therefore it requires the base game to play.

Q: How much will the expansion cost?

A: We have not announced pricing yet.

Q: Will this expansion only be available digitally, or will there be a boxed edition as well?

A: Both. Once Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns is available, you’ll be able to buy it digitally or get boxed editions at retail stores.

I doubt there's anyone who's ever played GW2 that would expect expansions to be free. After all, the game has no subscription and all updates have been free. I have no problem with paying for an expansion whatsoever. It's the right move for ArenaNet.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I would have been much more worried if they announced it was going to be free.

Not to mention that having a physical edition will increase sales of the game.

GW1s sales spiked when they released Factions and Nightfall so it is a smart way to get new people to notice the game as well.

Also worth noting Anet stated in the beginning im pretty sure the Expansions would be handled in Guild Wars 2 the same as they were in Guild Wars. The only difference will maybe be the price(unless i over-looked it already posted). The price was $19.99 for Guild Wars Expansion but could easily jump to $49-$59 depending on new additions and the current way gaming expansions are prices vs way back when GW was doing the $20 expansions.

All this is speculation on my part and my $20 expansions for the original game may have been a reduced price as i started playing later after that game was already out a while.

To my knowledge the orriginal GW1 expansions (which where not expansiosn but full games on itselves cost the price of a full game at release..

maybe you joined the game later, and didnt pay the expansions at release...

I paid $35 for Nightfall when it was new, but it might just be that it was more expensive over here (Sweden). Edit: or reading Lord Bachus post I might have gotten it cheap.

I would expect them to release the expansion for something like that and a box with the original game and expansion for 50 or so. But it is just a guess, and I honestly don't care that much because I will buy it as long as it is under $100. I need it, badly...

I was somewhat expecting HoT to include the base game for new players, having to buy the original aand an expansion is kind of a big barrier.

No - That is what expansions are. GW1 had 3 separate games (Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall) and one expansion (Eye of the North). The latter needed Prophecies.

The same can be said for Wow - all the expansions are built on the original game. They are not stand alone.

That is possible, EQ2 have done this in the past (sometimes but not always) but most games don't. They do usually sell a box with all included though for a higher price than just the expansions but most games don't start with that until their second expansion.

How exactly GW2 will do is still unknown.

Well for $10 you can get GW2 today.

Probably the price of the base game will drop permanently once the expansion is released, at least in online retailers.

We don't know if there will be a "ultimate edition" that brings the expansion+base game.

    Currently playing: GW2
Going cardboard starter kit: Ticket to ride, Pandemic, Carcassonne, Dominion, 7 Wonders

There is a reason the game is dirt cheap atm. It's to help alleviate that barrier for newer players interested in the expansion.

I believe you can get the base game ~15$ currently? (lasts through the weekend). I'm not sure if they will do similar sales for the other events (i.e PAX east) or not. Either way, you're not likely to get a more fair deal on a brand new release with other games.

I agree as well. Also, it gives us more legitimacy to expect significant content changes (as seems to be the case).

Some were, some were less so and the price generally reflected this.

The retail release implies a more substantial price which implies a more substantial expansion. Otherwise NCsoft will get a lot of bad PR. So good news!

Next question: there will be the expansion; a re-release of the core game and , the question, a combo pack?  If they opt for a combo - which may depend on whether they are moving to a series of expansions like GW1 - then this will impact the price as well.

GW's expansions were $40 at launch - e.g. factions, nightfall, gwen. They were defintiely not $20.

GW1 had standalone expansions but they were still expansions. Eye of the north required one of the three - Prophecies, Factions or Nightfall. Dlld's expectations that the expansion will include the original game was unreasonable.

Honestly given it doesn't have a sub fee its expected. Granted you could complain due to the fact it does have a cash shop that has an impact on gameplay (buying in game cash with the game focusing less on gear and more on utilities) its not that unexpected for expansions to cost cash. The big issue I'd say would be the actual cost. Given it does use a cash shop that has an effect on gameplay, I'd hope the expansion would be reasonably priced. So long as its $30 or below its a fair price. $40 or so it could be alright though it starts getting to the point of being 'iffy' to me.

    Missed Dild's comment earlier.

The combo pack I referred to above - if they opt to release one - would be the core game + the expansion and the price would reflect this e.g. an xpac might be $40; core game $60; combo $80 or whatever. Same deal as with TV boxed sets say for e.g. Game of Thrones; they will release the last season and a more expensive combo.
