You don't acquire an IP to dump it, though. Not vaporware.

And its not link buying a car factory where you can sell it for parts and gut it to make money. The quote I posted above seems to me they are in expanding mode. Unless they lying lol.

Its more than likely the usual PR BS that inevitably surrounds sales and acquisitions, while quietly, or not so quietly, restructuring takes place in the background. It will be interesting to see which games are dropped or sold off in the next few months.image

Not going to say this will make games better. Not like we shouldn't of seen this coming. SOE has been hurting for a long time now and they needed to make some big moves.

I do hope smedly is gone, the guy's time has come and gone. Time to get some new blood in the industry and I hope this move does just that. Only time will tell.

Actually I hope to see that happen too, but I doubt it as long as smedley the asshole is around, we wont. He hates anything to with Brad M. and wont admit it, but it shows.

I think this is where all SoE fans stand. What games if any will die and will any be brought back. Sony may have impacted Vanguard being shut down for all we know.

I think these guys wanted to break into the online gaming market and didn't want to start from scratch. With this deal, they have bought an infrastructure. I dont think they really care about the existing games as much as creating new ones that fit their own vision.

I think this is Sony getting rid of unwanted part of their business.

I would like to say there is chance for all past game to become active again, not just Vanguard, but that would be a long stretch.

From the company statement, there will be no interruption in games or other services provided by the company formerly known as SOE. In the long term, it means more games, more platforms, more genres.

My personal experience with "investment management firms" tells me otherwise.

Sure, they won't lay off any employee, interrupt any game service or product development *right now* (that would be foolish anyway, they need to assess the situation), but I'm curious to see what the outcome will be in 6 months.

These guys give you 1 bag of money the first year and want 2 in return the year after.

I'm kinda worried to see some of the not so profitable projects being ditched, because SOE have a rather varied/interesting portfolio of games and projects.

The quote on Forbes sounds like expansion but at this point everyone has a guess thats valid.

So now they can make weak games with crappy F2P across more platforms.  Mediocrity, huzzah!

What MMORPG (since that's the only thing I'm interested in here at this site) has SOE ever created that was truly good?  They bought EQ, they didn't create it.  EQ2 is/was ok but not spectacular.  SOE has acquired a lot of mediocre MMORPGs over time and done nothing to improve them.  On top of that they have really crappy F2P that just makes games worse.

Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.

Not sure why many read this as SOE being the company with the problem. When it's been Sony corp that has been struggling hard for years now to make a highly profitable quarter. They've lost market presence all over the place.

If anything IMO it shows SOE was one of the few assets they had that was worth selling off ( someone would buy) outside of selling the PS brand. Which is probably the most important branch to them right now.

They did make EQ1, Sony owned the company that became SoE. Many of the same staff still work there that made EQ1. Know your facts. If you dont like SoE now DBG you have that right but the fact remains. They are one of the Grandfathers that made MMOing what it is today!!!!

Only time will tell, but to be honest I think it speaks well for where the company is going.  Investment firms generally don't put money into companies that are ready to go belly up or doing crappy work.  Company's that do generally don't make it very far as an investment firm. :)

Ah, yes they do if their intent is to break it up and sell off the pieces.  In this case sell the games, ip, assets, and knowhow to other studios.

In the short term this should be seen as good news for - what was - SOE. As others have said there must have been "something" that interested the new owners; some potential for making money.

Whether this is good or bad news for individuals - hard to say. Depends in part on what they have paid for SOE and how SOE was structured within Sony. What exactly has been sold?

We know SOE developed games but "who" paid peoples wages; who handled computer support, banking, software licences, catering contracts, office furniture, customer support, legal and more. If SOE handled everything themselves some of those functions might get axed; if big Sony handled them then SOE would "pay" something to big Sony. There would even be a contribution towards the Sony presidents salary. That is how it works. With a new company in charge these type of costs might be totally different. It theory such a change could turn a "non-profitable" organisation into a "profitable" one over night.

And the message internally is that the acquisition will allow SOE to do all the things that they wanted to do but couldn't because big Sony wasn't green lighting  the plans etc.

    That's the short term.

The long term: aaaah who took the safety new away. If things don't work out then this will probably be the end of the road. The only step left would be what EA has done with ex-Mythic; allowed it to go it alone in whatever deal was done. Can't really see any other studio buying the assets, I just don't see the EQ IP turning into a billion dollar figures franchise!

I think they're more interested in H1Z1 and Planetside 2 honestly.

Won't be remotely surprised if you're correct! It's the crony-capitalist way.

Crony capitalism basically means a business trying to be profitable by getting special favors from the government.  I don't see how that's relevant here.

Get ready for the Micro -Transaction forced upon you and probably going to see some Pay2Win becoming obvious.

    Why do I say this?

Because if you look at the Super Bowl Commercials...you did not see Battlefield, COD did you...

    NO

You saw straight up cheap ass rip off mobile games that are making money Hanover Fist style. I imagine that a venture capitalist company that owns exactly 0 games/game devs/ game anything, is looking to buy a company that they can use to churn out chump change games and has been looking at the numbers in the Gaming world, and when you look at those numbers, F2P slop is king. They found that it isn't as easy to lure suckers to vegas anymore, so they use the tried and true gambling lures to sucker suckers on their phones/tablets/PC's and SOE is just slimy enough to go along with it.

It might not be crony capitalism, but its certainly possible to have a form of the more distasteful capitalism.  The kind where a company doesn't  build, sell or design anything.  The kind where it sees more value in  destruction than in creation.

=-) H1Z1 and PS2 share a lot of tech with EQN. But EQN also has Storybricks and Voxel Farms Tech that could change how we game. Even if they dont care about EQN I am sure they want that tech. EQN could change how we game. I really hope their new owners keep their word and leave Daybreak as independent. If they really become Indy, this could really blow the roof off this place.

    QUOTE PLS READ

“Sony Online Entertainment, newly rebranded as Daybreak, is a great addition to our existing portfolio of technology, media and entertainment focused companies. We see tremendous opportunities for growth with the expansion of the company’s game portfolio through multi-platform offerings as well as an exciting portfolio of new quality games,” said Jason Epstein, Senior Partner of Columbus Nova, in a press release. “The recent Early Access launch success of H1Z1 is just one testament to the talent and dedication of the studio’s developers to create great online gaming experiences.”

SOE president John Smedley will remain president at Daybreak.

“We are excited to join Columbus Nova’s impressive roster of companies. They have a proven track record in similar and related industries and we are eager to move forward to see how we can push the boundaries of online gaming,” Smedley said in a statement. “We will continue to focus on delivering exceptional games to players around the world, as well as bringing our portfolio to new platforms, fully embracing the multi-platform world in which we all live.”

What SOE has needed for the last few years is a management overhaul.  I was somewhat excited when I heard the acquisition news, thinking, "Hey, Smed and his puppets are finally going to get the boot and there will be an injection of new blood to jump-start the company".  /sigh

    Ah well.
