In terms of the poll I voted western...since it hasn't been done and would be neat.
However, if done properly a mmo based upon Rifts by Palladium Books would be amazing. The game would need to be ridiculously large though.
For those who don't know and are too lazy to read the wikipedia article I linked, Rifts is a pen and paper rpg set in a post apocolyptic earth (psychic and magic apocolypse started with the killing of millions by a nuclear attack) that blends tons of genres together into one hell of a melting pot.
The whole idea of a superhero MMO was idiotic to begin with. Generally one hero saves the day from multiple villains. Maybe the super hero has a partner or on the rare occasion a couple team up like the avengers. But having a MMO where you bump into a hundred heroes in every direction completely waters down the concept. Aka if everyone is special, no one is.
Superhero MMO's need to die a most deserved death in favor of smaller scale console games.
Because bumping to countless wizards, rogues, warriors, hunters, any other fantasy trope, works....

I'm not sure if you played City of Heroes, but the setting design worked really well. You had essentially about a quarter of the world's population who had superpowers of some variety. So not only did you have a superhero force the size of the NYPD, but even many of your run of the mill gang members were packing super powers as well, giving it a sort of balance.
While I enjoyed City of Heroes, I do have to agree with him and say that Superhero MMO's are just not a good idea. Superheroes are better suited to solo ventures or as part of a small team, Spiderman or the Avengers for example. When you make them the norm they lose their excitement factor and become.. well.. the norm.
The draw of superheroes is the single guy/gal against the rising criminal element and, ultimately, super powered villains that only they can deal with. Again, as an example, Spiderman facing off against Sandman. If you had 50 super heroes battling this one bad guy, it waters down the whole effect. It just doesn't work. That's how I view Superhero MMOs.
Because when Frodo battled Smaug he did it with hundreds of wizards, thousands of archers, hundreds of healers and warriors........

It was actually Bilbo and he didn't battle Smaug. He hid from him with a powerful magic ring. The Archer Bard actually killed him on advice from a talking bird. He told him of a small patch on his breast that didn't have scales to protect him.
I don't think we are all heroes in an MMO. We are just the common people out for a little adventure.

We'll see how much draw this genre brings in Cyberpunk 2077, solo rpg from the same studio as Witcher 3, hopefully sometime over the next year +1/2. I'll be playing it, because I was really into the pnp Cyberpunk 20+ years ago, but I'm not sure what kind of following it will have otherwise.

To make it clear that Bard was not possibly on drugs, technically he understood the speech of those types of birds, it wasn't a singular talking bird. Its just that the Dalish men had learned to understand the speech of thrushes and had a longstanding relatonship with said form of bird.
Anyway the dwarves fought off the early form of non-flying fire breathing dragons. But none but the great Eagles of Manwe could truly stand against the winged fire dragons. But even so Glaurang basically fucked up anyone and anything that came at him (until Turin) and cleared out the entire city of Nargothrond, which was a Noldor city and filled with complete badasses. The Noldor elves of the First Age were super strong. Fingolfin the High King fought Sauron's boss, Morgoth, in single combat and crippeld him permanently.
Even the Men of the First Age were complete badasses; Hurin, Turin's father, fought in a battle as the last man standing against Gothmog's entire bodyguard of trolls killng 70 trolls and with each death cried out "Day will come" until we was finally exhausted and grappled by orcs and taken hostage and forced to watch the runination of his children.
The real problem here is that the game game developers can't stop themselves from making inappropriate matchups because dragons are like big and mean, bro.
You want a good match up, do your game with Ecthelion Vs Gotmog. Captain of Gondolin vs Captain of the Balrogs.
You want a dumb match up send 100 people against a dragon that can simply fly into the air and leave any time it wants and make the guy who hits for the most damage use daggers that can't possibly even penetrate the skin of an elephant much less a dragon. Unless you give them an Anti-aircraft battery. And maybe a surface to air missile.
Anyway if you want to be a hero and use Tolkien as a reference point read the Silmarillion and see where it gets you. Apparently your dad gets abducted by trolls lead by a satanic super power and locked onto a chair for decades and forced to watch while you forget who you are, kill many of your own friends, sleep with your sister, kill a gigantic dragon single handly, and then run off a cliff when the dragon makes you remember that chick you slept with was your sister.
Personly I would like a soldier type MMO, I'm just not sure it would work as an MMO. My main problem is I like trinity type games, and for that you realy need some fantasy elements. Honestly healers doesn't make sense unless you aply some fantasy.
Trinity type game imo need a fantasy setting to some extent. Even a sci-fi game like SWTOR had some. I mean, healing someone by shooting kolto at them with a big cannon doesn't make sense unless you add a little fantasy.
So, make a fantasy trooper type game. Lots of guns of different shapes and sizes.

I know the FF mmo's have a decent steampunk component to them... especially 14... but they aren't full fledged steampunk games.

That comment only does anything if you're into LotR ... which I am not.
For example, in LotR, ordinary people do not have any way at all to become a wizard. If you're born as some sort of god, as Gandalf was, then you're a wizard. Otherwise, nope.
Theres tons of fantasy material that is not as low on magic as the LotR setting and appeal to me much more.

As much as I love The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings I'd rather play in Forgotten Realms or Dragonlance myself. Those are probably my two favorite settings due to books I've read about characters in them. It's part of why I don't like the LOTRO MMORPG. It was just so dull in terms of classes and class abilities IMO. Once you experience all the utility available to many classes in D&D 1st and 2nd edition it's hard to go back. The only downside was melee classes weren't fun to play.
I would like to see a cyber-punk MMO like Deus-Ex, Syndicate, Blade-Runner or a pirate one done a lot better than PotBS. By better I mean bigger port towns with various elements for trade and activities, bigger scale ocean with the ability to sail to the Orient and Mediterranean, and ship combat that limits your view to the deck of your ship. Assassin's Creed Black Flag did a good job with that, though of course typical MMO players will want a hotbar to fire off special abilities.
Because when Frodo battled Smaug he did it with hundreds of wizards, thousands of archers, hundreds of healers and warriors........
If you want to compare Lord of the Rings to your typical MMO style combat, then look at the start of the first movie. An entire army and Sauron was swinging his mace through the lot of them, sending bodies flying in all directions. Wizards didn't really exist in Lord of the Rings, outside of the Maiar, who were pretty much Gods, so wizards don't really add into the equation.
I voted other because I was torn between two of the choices.
1. Horror - I would love to see a MMO based on the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. A Call of Cuthulu based game. If done properly I could see myself playing it for a long time.
2. Sci FI - This genre I have two votes for/. The first is a game set in Dr Who universe. Fights with ships, multiple worlds and alternate universes to explore. I have been a Whovian since I was a kid. I watched Pertwee and Baker episodes with my parents, and I watch the current show with my kids.
My second vote for the Sci FI genre would be a new Phantasy Star. I do not think that PSO 2 will be coming to the west. I think it would be cool if they made a MMO that was more similar to their old games, turn based combat and all.

I voted for another Sci Fi since EVE is just spaceships and SWG was pretty lame. I'd like a plausible scifi world to live in, get immersed in.
Yes, I'd like a Western, for sure, but that can wait.

GAMEPLAY genre is what's important. actually different game mechanics.
not a new coat of paint with the same ole same ole mechanics.
a Western themed WoW is still another in a long line of clones.
this is why MMOs are so shit. everyone's worried about the theme and not the gameplay.
