Guild Wars 2: Stronghold PvP Mode Detailed

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

PCGamer has an extensive preview of the forthcoming Guild Wars 2 "Stronghold" PvP mode that will arrive with the Heart of Thorns expansion. In Stronghold, teams are given a fortress, each with a lord nestled deep within. Teams have two objectives: To protect the Stronghold and Lord; and to invade and kill the opposing team's Lord.

To do so, players will be able to gather resources to bring two different types of NPCs into the match to assist in the battle:

  • Archers that can do massive harass and damage the opposing team's NPCs. Archers do little damage to the gates of the opposition's Stronghold

  • Doorbreakers can do massive damage to the opposition's Stronghold gates but can be taken down in a single shot by Guards

Teams will also have access to a trebuchet used to throw boulders at any strategic point on the map.  While they can be destroyed, trebuchets can be rebuilt almost instantly if supplies are available.

According to the article, PvP players should be reasonably well-acquainted with these mechanics as they were secondary objectives on existing Conquest maps.

As the new system has been tested, the team has noticed players organically falling into roles: High DPS clearing lanes for the NPCs, evasive builds utilizing their skills for delivery of supplies, and support builds manning trebuchets and picking off NPCs coming within range.

Lastly, at certain points in the fight a "Hero" will arrive on the battlefield, a mercenary of sorts, that can be recruited by either team through the use of a 10-second channel. From what developers said, the Hero becomes the focal point for an all out brawl between the two teams trying to recruit him/her.

This game is doing some good things, I wish I liked the combat more, how do I force myself to like this combat more? I need to look at it with a new angle, any ideas?

Personally, for me, it's always been about the classes. I prefer my heavies to the more light and medium classes.  The Guardian and Warrior just suit my style more. It's possible the combat's not for you, but maybe it's just you don't like the classes?

Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.

Look at it from sensationality point of view. Find the skills that give you the most satisfying experience and exhaust all avenues of viability using those skills. For me my favorite weapon skill is banish which is guardians hammer 4 skill. its not surprise then i main guardian and use hammer medi build as well as hammer frontline in WvW skill grouping.

choose a class/profession that fits your style and play it the way it is supposed to be played? i found Warrior to be boring but Elementalist and Mesmer are fun to me. throwing around elemental weapons for others to use or making portals and carrying golems around etc.

    my top MMOs: UO,DAOC,WoW,GW2

most of my posts are just my opinions they are not facts,it is the same for you too.

Instead of too little too late (in a free to play game). I would go go for 'they lost me a long time ago' or maybe 'I will never trust them again. '

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

Looks interesting.  Though I prefer WvW, I still might have to give this a try or two.

That's part of it, I have tried them all, I identified most with the warrior, the problem is that leap ability and I'm calling it combat, there is something about that ability that just needs fixed, and you're right, I don't like any of the other classes. same in wildstar, the only class I like just has that one thing, coincidentally also the leap ability that does not work for me. I guess the wow warrior leap has spoiled me, but at least it works as I intended it to in my mind before I pressed the leap button, in gw2 and wildstar I end up leaping past my oppontent, when that happens, I get discouraged and end up blaming the entire combat system. Leaping past my target just defies any reasonable logic in my mind, it's really that simple I think.

Do we know if it is going to be 5v5? Could be interesting with more players too: 8 - 12.

For me this has the best combat in any game I have played.  I feel so spoiled that when I play something else I am wishing for GW2 combat. If the combat doesn't do it for you ,  I don't expect you would want to continue playing.

game needs to allow addons and UI changes

some major gameplay gripes about this game could easily be solved by the above

Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women...

Anet said that the mode is most fitting for 5v5 to avoid having zergy fights. However, they also mentioned that the final decisions will be taken after the beta and things can change. If anything, we have seen that Anet is ready to change alot of things if the players really want a change. We have seen that during GW2's original beta and we will probably see it again.

Hopefully, we won't have any system scratched though. Cause during the beta, due to player feedback, Anet scratched entire systems from the game.

Looking forward to more pvp game modes, I love this game's combat system it really clicks for me. Guild Wars had one of the better if not best mmorpg pvp on the market atm. Adding in another class and new weapon skills/traits will expand upon it greatly in spvp and WvW. This expansion is much needed even if it isn't a huge amount of content it's all steps in the right direction.

Search for the ICM mod for Guild Wars 2.. makes the combat much more actiony. It's easy to set up.

.. and you don't need to use the leap ability you've mentioned. Use a different weapon set and skills.

This is starting to feel like this is not going to amount to more than 3 living stories and a balance update.

It will be interesting to see what they want to charge for it.

Will be great if they can balance it for 8v8. This will be the best pvp feature since release.

Edit; This is a great idea mazut! This is some very interesting stuff! After experiencing GW1's intense pvp community, it's nice to see an update to this. I really enjoyed the gw2's spvp for some time and will now return to see what's up. I've heard really good things.

Thanks Vanor, I will try the icm mod out, as far as the leap, I will just have to success it up and get used to it, my play style requires a sword shield and a decent gap closer

Well that seems kind of irrational.  you are letting one ability dictate your enjoyment of 2 games.  have you tried practicing the ability and adjusting to the new parameters?

These abilities are skillshots.  The are intended to be aimed.  Also have you tried using bull rush on the warrior?

btw im really excited to play this mode. ??
