I hope you are correct. I don't share your optimism though, not at this point.

Not optimism but common sense? Cancel EQNEXT and then do what? make apps for android? makes no sense to cancel the most anticipated title.

Ha look we agree! I too believe it will go on. Go on in a more progressive direction.
I have a feeling that EQ next is dead in the water, however, if it does go on, it will be released a rushed mess meant to appease the bottom line/ red tape guys. /RIP SOE
It's sad to see David depart from what is likely my favorite franchise. Even though I didn't care for his over-selling of EQNext, its still hard to imagine the brand without him.
I see EQNext going on, but I see it in name only. For a game that is likely in very very very early Alpha (if that, using Landmark as reference), I don't see them going in the same direction.
Maybe EQNext Mobile.
It's an investment firm, after all. They'll go where the money is.
To be honest, Jeff Butlers involvement with the project means more to me than Georgeson. For those who don't know, Butler is a long time EQ guy going back to the old days with McQuaid and the original "vision". He was also involved in Vanguard. While Georgeson might be the modern EQ guy, I'd be much more worried if they lost Butler, someone who was actually involved in EQ when it mattered.
This is really good news. The direction EQ Next going is horrible in that it is to similar to GW2 with a bit of minecraft one the side. Georgeson in my opinion is a nobody that didn't deserve to work with the EQ franchise. EQ has a large fan base and I don't think you should up and change the formula. If your wanting change everything even lore then make a new game. Lets move this back to the original "social" EQ that could be amazing with the Story Brick Tech and get away from this voxel trash.
Fire butler while your at it as he seem to be a strong supporter. I could be wrong here maybe he's just trying to earn a pay check by developing what he's told. He was once great.
EQ CLASSIC REBOOT.........please....... lets Kickstart this shit Daybreak
I wonder if EQN will take a new direction. I hope back to EQ roots, tab targeting. Less about action combat and return of the trinity? Or will it be business as always?
Right now I have only seen confirmation from Community Managers (Brasse, Grodbin and maybe Amnerys) and Dave to have been layoff...and Dave was way more a PR guy than a developer.
considering that we have seen almost zerp from next recently and that they wree letting the landmark players create the next world, this cant be a bad thing

Of all the people to let go, I feel like he was one of the worst choices. He's always seemed more genuinely passionate about Everquest than anyone before. I don't know if this means EQN will be canceled (I hope not), but this doesn't really give much hope as to how "Everquest" it will be.

No one said shit about EQN being canceled. You can definitely bet that its direction will be different from henceforth however.

They aren't going to change the direction, the game is too advanced for that and any change would cost way too much money and with the layoff they just did they clearly aren't interested in investing more than they need.
I played EQ from launch 1999. I dont want the above screen to be anything for EQN. As for the screen you are looking at for EQN, the build quality has gone way up. That pic is some player standing in front of a shack.
Even if I don't like the direction EQN has went (with graphic and gameplay) I feel little bit sad that Linda and David will not be there any more. I hope both of them will find a new job soon.
Now I hope they will put Landmark on ice and only focus on EQ Next, so they do some progress or even better redo EQ Next entirely as I am not so sure the FPS like direction of EQ Next will make the game any better. However I doubt they will do it as they have already invested lots of cash in EQN.

The direction will be changing. It'll be less about creating a virtual world where players can help create content via landmark and more focused on how to monetize it like Trion ended up doing with Archeage.

SOE usually release their games rushed in a mess. In 2004 most people thought EQ 2 would be the next big thing but it's state was so crappy at release that it wouldn't have been that even if Wow hadn't released 6 weeks after.
Vanguard... Yeah, not just their fault but they could have fixed it up and the game would still be running today.
SWG was in many ways a great game but it was still rushed and incredible buggy at launch.
You honestly thought that EQN would be well polished and bug free before hearing about this?
Nah, if Daybreak is smart they actually release this game as a winner instead of a half finnished mess as usual. If they are dumbed they just close it down but it would be a waste.
I do wish David the best and I blame Smed for the whole early release thing, I wish they fired him instead.

Is he leaving the company all together or is he just stepping away from Everquest?
Either way it is a great loss imo.

Him and Linda and who knows how many are now no longer part of DGC.
Right now I have only seen confirmation from Community Managers (Brasse, Grodbin and maybe Amnerys) and Dave to have been layoff...and Dave was way more a PR guy than a developer.
Eric Smith @F4Felgon
Layoffs aren't fun, but that's business. Loved working on Landmark, and I hope EQN turns out well. I'll be around!
What EQ players wanted with EQN -
