PvE Sandbox

Dear mmorpg community,

Well, I doubt what I want even exists, but I figure I will ask and see what you guys/gals think is the closest.

I want something that is exciting and/or at least VERY imersive. I really enjoyed DF 1.0 for the little time that I played it, but my only issue with DF in general is that it is VERY PVP centric. I want something that has that danger, but I want to just be able to go off, chop some wood, make a house and fish for a living...travel back into town, sell my fish and do that... I want a world, with day/night, seasons, weather. I used to love WoWs real time system, immersive, BUT the rest of the game is not so much..  I am currently trying out Ryzom, which I really enjoyed years ago, but stopped playing due to instability. EVE is supposed to be great, but I'm not a huge space kind of guy, I'm more DF era kind of guy. I also don't mind older graphics, DF looks amazing IMO, UO is definitely a bit dated, but would be willing to give it a real go if it were worth it. I was reading recently that some of the private servers are pretty nice....although I definitely would rather something more like DF in the graphics depo.

The most fun i've ever had in games were, my time in DF 1.0 spending hours chopping wood getting ready to make my little boat and set sail around the world...worried I'd be killed at any moment.  Um....runescapes old wilderness was also amazing with friends....hmmm....San Andreas Multiplayer RPG servers were also SUPER fun about 3-5 years ago. I also LOVED modding and playing Minecraft, but go bored since it was just a randomly generated world and was really just me and my brother...playing an MMO is great, world feels a lot more alive with others. Also really enjoyed Terraria/Starbound. I really find most AAA games pretty darn boring...especially too much story driven/playing a movie type of game...bores me to tears.

Again, I know my perfect game doesn't exist , but just wanted to know what you thought was probably closest.

Thanks,

- OP

Life is Feudal is probably your best bet, however there is PvP.

Many of the newer games you hear about on MMORPG are PVP centric. Pantheon:Rise of the Fallen might qualify as a PvE sandbox, not sure.  The game is still in the development stage and we don't know much about the game yet.  Current games?   In a thread similar to this I remember a couple of people suggesting Runescape. Of course it is an older game, but it underwent a facelift not too long ago. I played the game years ago and had some fun but just too old for me at this point. It is definetly PvE focused with optional PvP.  I also would love to play a modern PvE sandbox but really there is nothing. I love LOTRO and GW2, which, I understand , are far from sandbox games but the communities are great and their is a focus on PvE. Lately I've also been playing Project Gorgon , early alpha game, developed by former member of Asheron's Call team.  Very early in the game at the moment but having fun.  If he every gets more money I see this game being lots of fun. Free to play in alpha, no entry fee, so might as well check it out.

Life is Feudal looks a lot like what I would want...when the mmo version is released. Even with just the private server version, I may try it out. The other mmo I forgot to mention was WURM, I absolutely loved this game, but I didn't/dont' have enough time to dedicate to it. I may try to see if I can make time again, because it was just so good.

    Have you tried Mortal Online?

I'm surprised DMKano didn't suggest Archeage. It's exactly the kind of game you describe. It's got PvP when you want it but when you don't, there are plenty of safe areas for exploring, farming, sailing, trading, housing you can furnish, fishing, mining, questing and lots more.

Im feeling Archeage even though it does have it's lists of complaints its a sandbox mmorpg non the less and still holds it's ground

Fallen Earth has a lot of PvE and is somewhat sandboxy. It's crafting system is its strongest point though.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

I would say Landmark once the dungeoneering tools are in and people start fleshing out full MMO content. The building is like MC but more detailed as the voxels are much smaller and can be manipulated to make circles, arches, lattices, etc. People have created some fantastic structures so far.

It is technically a PvE sandbox now as it has combat, itemization, and mobs but there are only five different mobs at the moment in the overworld and caverns. Once the mob tools are in and players can place them on their claim and script content gameplay will broaden considerably.

Everquest Next is our only shot a pure PvE sandbox and we need to be vocal about making sure it gets finished.  There is a huge gap in styles within this genre and there hasn't been a pure PvE sandbox made since Asheron's Call and its about DAMN time developers take heed of this missing style.  Project Gorgon is another alternative but it is so early in development and just recently got greenlit that it's going to take a few years before it comes to fruition so keep plugging away for EQN, regardless of its payment model, it's combat system, and it's art style cause at the end of the freaking day none of those define what or how a PvE sandbox game is let alone influence how it should be created.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

Yes there is Wurm Online has a pure PVE server and is a true sandbox mmo.

You might take a look at Project Gorgon.  It's a small studio and very incomplete.  But it's PvE, and intended to be an open world type sandbox.  Even if it's too far from a finished project now, keep an eye on it for the future.  Oh, and it's free.  So might as well look.

    Hope that helps some.

You'll be disappointed. For most crafting you will need to acquire certain crafting components that can only be had on the AH for gold or by running packs to certain pvp areas. And don't get me started on the small, little area you pharm tokens for weapons. All in all it's fun...for 3 months, like all PVP centric games. And if anyone tells you it's NOT PVP centric, then they are just kidding themselves. Oh sure, you can do 95% of the quests without PVP issues but kill this, go here and do that questing has a very short enjoyment factor and the entire quest line can be completed in a few hours. The big thing is housing, running packs/crafting and the cool stuff can only be made by getting items only had in PVP areas. Any game that forces me into PVP...im passing on, period. Sometimes I want to engage in PVP but sometimes I don't and my game experience should not be reduced because I don't.

I was pretty interested in ArcheAge for a few years now, but when I played it...it felt like they tried super hard to have a controlled sandbox, which in turn didn't feel like a sandbox to me. The way housing is done really turns me off, just feels like a working mill. A lot of the features and ideas sound amazing on paper, but when playing it....nothing really got me going at all. I tried Fallen Earth for alittle bit, but I really didn't like what I experienced, and as far as Mortal Online, pretty sure that is heavy PVP if I remember not to mention nothing but bad reviews last time I checked. I really hope I can get into EQN when it arrives, even though I'm not a fan of voxel graphics at all. I just feel like I JUST missed the 'good' mmo days with vanilla UO, EQ 1 and even vanilla WoW. Anyways, at this point I am really looking at LiF, WURM, EQN, will keep an eye of Project Gordon and that's about it I guess.
