Sociological...Why I play every mmo.

delete5230delete5230 Member EpicPosts: 7,081

I feel that I have a unique ability to be rigorously honest with myself is all aspects in life including my video game experience.

In other words, If I'm getting fat I know it.  If someone yells at me for something I did or say I usually come around within 24 hour to realize it's truly my fault....This happens a lot, unfortunately I cant seem to shut up in real life :)....I know me !

ANYWAY :

I'm an ability junkie, I found out the first time I ever logged into Vanilla World of Warcraft back in 2004.  I found if I go back to my trainer every two levels I get something new.  Then often I have to re-think how I play if I get something cool.  This is one of my driving forces to play mmo's.

A FAST STORY :

I travel a lot.  Often with about five or so people.  We gather in the lobby, visit each others rooms in the evening and so on. Well, I made this friend that refused to play Vanilla WoW.  Couldn't persuade him to play for the life of me. So I tricked him.

I logged into the game pre-created a level 1 Horde Warlock and called him over.  I had him sit down, irritated and reluctantly he did ( that's what I do.  Irritate people ).  I showed him the w,s,a,d keys, and had him kill a few bats for a quest.....Next thing you know " BAM " he leveled a few times.  I took him to the trainer for a few new abilities and he was hooked for two years :)

A few months ago, another friend and I were playing Vanilla WoW.  He told me his wife often looks over his shoulder.  She loves watching him play but she FLAT OUT REFUSES TO PLAY......So I told him to trick her :).....Same thing, like potato chips a few new abilities, now she can't stop playing.

CONCLUSION :

MMOs seem to give the feeling of the unknown a little more than other video games.

This is why I have to play every new mmo no matter how bad they SUCK after just a few weeks.  And as of late they do SUCK in less than a month.......But, developers are cashing in on our feeling of unknown.

I'm late for work.....see ya !!!!

Are you sure it's about the unknown and not about reward response?

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

It is a lot about unknown (exploring the unknown) because as soon as everything is known and familiar no matter how big of a carrot/reward  the interest is gone.

    LOL!

Though I do have to admit that discovering new abilities, and choosing whether to use them or not is part of the fun of playing an MMO.

Although if the leveling process bores me, it's not enough of a carrot to keep me around and I'll be gone around level 10 or something (if not sooner than that if the game's really boring to me).

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

Good story OP, I liked both of them.

Not only mmos give you the feeling of unknown, others do as well. I haven't played Arx Fatalis in about 10 years and picked it up on Steam for $4.99. I still get that feeling of the unkown crawling through the dungeons of a classic rpg from the past. That "whats around the next corner" keeps me up way too late sometimes!

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Arx Fatalis! How I love this game. If you liked it, try:

    - "Dark messiah of might and magic": combat is awesome and sections can be completed in different ways.

    - "Call of Chtuhlu - Dark corners of the earth"

    - "Vampire the masquerade"

Sorry for hijacking a bit, but these single players games just had that amazing discovery/unknown feeling for me.
