Which MMOs don't have random/rare spawns of material or mobs?
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

I know he wasn't really random but the most memorable had to be meeting Stitches for the first time in WOW. I remember I was a Mage and I was just heading towards the half way point towards Darkshire. I looked left as I saw a herb node only then to notice the two cross swords at the top indicating I was in combat.
I looked back towards the road only to see this massive abomination hurtling towards me. I seriously was not far off c*aping myself. Needless to say I died quickly and for a few moments after that had to stand and catch my breath.
Awesome moment.
WoW was great for mobs like that. First one I met was that scorpion in the Valley of Trials that would trash newbies who didn't see him coming. The second one to catch me off guard was Son of Arugal in the Undead area. Then there were the Outrider patrols and all sorts of other named and patrolling mobs. WoW was really good at having lots of them spread out around the game world.

Nothing like an RE to make your day. There were weeks I would get 2 or 3, then months that I would get none.
If you can map it's location, it's not random.
If it's on a timer, it's not random.
If killing the same exact mob or farming a specific area results in a drop, it's not random.
Random implies you can't predict where, when, or how. If there's a wiki page on it, you can guarantee it's not random.
I miss them. It made the world feel much more alive.
I don't know if the number of random encounters has dropped so much though. It just feels like MMOs are tweaked to the direction where everything is so easy that random encounters aren't thrilling like that any more, and where older MMOs placed those difficult encounters so that you'd have to watch out for their aggro newer MMOs take steps to make sure you won't get into fight with them unless you choose it. It makes it a lot less exciting.
@Sunandshadow: I don't think the OP meant that kind of random encounters where monsters appear out of nowhere for every n steps you take. I think he meant rare strong mobs, events, etc. that you can see while exploring and try to either engage or avoid.
RE are great in pen and paper dnd. But that is a different medium than a mmorpg. Many people would find that distracting. Think about it.
Player1: We setup camp for the night with a hot fire and 3 watches.
DM: Ok, who is on each watch?
Player 2: <lists who is on each watch>
DM: Rolls dice (maybe he doesn't ::wink wink::). On the second watch, player 3 and player 4, you hear some deep voices mumbling in the distance in a language you can't understand. What do you do?
That doesn't work in a mmorpg so well.
Also, you might have them while travelling. Party is walking along the road when (DM rolls dice) a group of men on horseback rapidly approach. Are they bad guys? Are they guards patrolling for the local lord? Both?

John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."

Yes , i mean that kind of encounter.
I don't say they complete disappear , but like you said , the number become less and less to the point it don't interest anymore.
The random create some moment of jackpot or oh_crap! which make things become interest (in good or bad way)
