City of Titans, the spiritual successor to City of Heroes raised more than $650,000, with a goal I believe at $300,000 or less, the fact it doesn't even get a mention is a disgrace.
Sadly none of those games are even on my radar. I don't know about some of them but it looks like most are so PvP centric that it will never garner the support of mainstream gamers such as myself.

Call of Duty and LOL prove the mainstream is PVP. Their numbers dwarf any MMO even WOW. The numbers are plain to see.
What I suggest is that you may be a mainstream MMO themepark gamer. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
All it takes is for one of these PVP games to become popular with the mainstream for the entire paradigm to shift.
I am not a PVP guy either, I hate LOL, despise Call of Duty, and I haven't played a RTS since Warcraft3 came out. I actually mostly play strategy games like Civ5 these days. I still stop by this website now and then to get the MMO news.
I hope one of these new games announced can provide something different than what I have played before. Some do sound interesting and promising. I'm not going to hold my breath though. I'm also not going to write a game off out of hand just because it expects me to compete with other players.
( Note to self-Don't say anything bad about Drizzt.)

So CoD proves that PvP is mainstream, but Civ 5 doesn't prove the opposite?

The difference between CoD PvP and Civ 5 PvP is Civ 5's PvP has a consequence. CoD you lose a match? Oh well. Next round. Civ 5 you lose a battle? You might now have left your flank open to another attack. Invading your neighbor may cause your nemesis to launch nukes. Attacking your nemesis might make your ally see the opening and begin invading your borders.
This type of PvP hurts mainstream's idea of PvP. It isn't instantly gratifying and you can't win in one round. You can win one game of Civ 5 to be utterly dominated the second. And it takes hours if not days to complete a real Civ 5 game. Not 15 minutes.
You need to do a companion piece to this... "The 5 Most Successful MMO Kickstarter's That Have Released"
Where are the success stories... all I keep seeing is requests for handouts.
If people wanted games made by Cryptic, I doubt they'd be kickstarting projects, they'd just play NW, STO or CO, proper MMORPG development usually lasts more than two years...

Originally posted by SavageHorizon Yeah give us a successful kickstarter story where the game has actually released, oh wait you can't. This thread is just another stealth Crowfall hype thread. Where was this type of thread before Cf.
There is at least one article per month on SotA. There have been regular updates on Pathfinder. Camelot Unchained has had a number of articles when they were releasing interesting information and now that they are about to kick off their alpha I'm sure you'll see more.
The man/lady asked for RELEASED. Not "alpha","beta", or "gamma quadrant".
So apparently he/she is right. You can't.
I think he was referring to the last bit about it being a Crowfall hype thread, and where are the articles on other projects before CF...

I won't admit what I've dropped on Star Citizen already. I have been a WoW subscriber since 2010 and have spent more on Chris Roberts' unreleased space sim than I have on Blizzard's flagship. And that includes the mounts and pets I've purchased in the store. I sure hope SC delivers. It will ruin crowdfunding for me forever if it doesn't.
Originally posted by Chaserz Star Citizen: bought into the million dollar+ hype and bought a ship as a buy in. For all their website hype all you can do is walk around an empty hanger and fly around in your ship outside of it. The website is more interesting. So I disputed my purchase and after lots of back and forth eventually got my money refunded. Pass.
In the future, it would help if you read the website of the game you're buying before you buy it. The "Project Status" page shows exactly what is available to do in game right now and it has been available for quite a while.
As fascinating as this all sounds, we still don't have any concrete fully launched games, MMORPGs at least, to look at as a precedent. I refuse to give any money until I start seeing results. So far, after getting a trial invite for a friend for Pathfinder online, I'm glad I'm waiting. Far too much polish is needed in that game for me to get excited at this point. I'm not going to go and say, ewww this game sucks, because it IS still in Alpha, but man, does it have a looong way to go to get to a character feedback feel that I enjoy.
That being said, I will watch and wait and plunk downmoney after I've gotten a chance to research or play a launched version of these games.
Not really liking the whole knowing about a game years before launch aspect either. I prefer it the way Firaxis handled Sid Meiers Beyond Earth, announced last year and boom, it's out already and a mini expansion is coming out end of the month for it that was just announced a few months ago. That's what I like, not this waiting years to be disappointed crap, lol.

I could easily state that Skyrim and Dragonage Inquisition 20+ million box sales prove my point but I won't because It's not proving my original point in that I won't play none of those games on this list.

The Repopulation was on Kickstarter long before any of those games. Its been on your hype-meter for over 2 years. Most of the time in the Top 7. Development has been progressing nicely and you dont even mention it?
Oh I see. It wasnt one of the Big $$$ Makers.

I'm done with Kickstarters. Companies used to have to earn money by actually making good games. Remember those days?
All they have to do now is promise a good game and people throw money at them. It's pathetic. How many times and how many people have gotten burned by a Kickstarter - a game that changes half way through, doesn't get released, Alpha/Beta tests for years on end, or just gets abandoned by everyone at the helm.
The ones that do move on to release use Kickstarter as "pre order" gimmicks to boost sales while still not actually proving that the game earned its credit.
Wait, didn`t they confuse the first 2 places? How can CU be as low as 2nd?
On a serious note, interesting that they choose Shards and Pathfinder ahead of couple others (say, SotA comes to mind first) - including Crowfall, in case these 5 were ranked by numbers!? The feeling is that the list was made ad hoc, just to put something in the vid.
Ok this is just a personal preferense but you could at least mention City of Titans. Not in the list but as a honorable mention. Just for the sake of the superhero MMO genre wich feels so empty after the shutdown of the great City of Heroes. Just my 2 cents....
I'd really like to know this rude awakening. There are no plans to not allow people to host their own world. Nor has there been any change to the promised features outlined in the kickstarter.

To be fair, there are very few success stories at all in MMOs right now. Even the ones that don't come from Kickstarter usually flop pretty quickly.

I agree, gone are the days of late nights and loyalty to an MMO. I've gone back to single player games (Dragon Age Inquisition atm).
