Is it an MMORPG?

DauntisDauntis Member UncommonPosts: 600

... or is it just a MOBA?

I mean if I am going to play an MMORPG I want to be able to make my own character not pick one of a line. I get that there will be skills to assign and what not, but it is nice to be able to have some look choices etc.

The devs are calling it an MMORPG and a Strategy Game. It's not really a MOBA since the servers are entire persistent worlds. I suppose the campaigns may see MOBA like in that they are PvP focused with rules & win conditions but they last much much longer and have no set number of teammates like MOBA's. There is also a player driven economy, points of interest to capture and an Eternal Kingdom that is persistent. Offline passive skill training (think EVE), character progression, disciplines, and promotion classes also separate it from MOBAs. So it is an MMORPG but a different flavor than what I can say that I've seen before.

Do you guys use some secret bittervet madlibs webpage to come up with reasons you don't like games? This stuff gets weirder and weirder with each title that gets announced.

Of course there is! That is why some of my posts make less sense than other posts :D

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

To put into context how strange the question is worded.  I'll try an analogy.

Is this a burger or a sandwich? I mean, it doesn't have a tomato in it.

You're talking about a feature that could be in either, or neither genre.

I don't think my question was so weird or out of line... or why anyone needs to be a dick about it.

I asked because it is similar to some arena pvp games, in that you are choosing a character and entering pocket words to engage in pvp combat. Yes this has some extended campaign elements.

My biggest question was more like, do you make your own character or is it really just choosing a character out of a group of characters like you do in say... LoL or HotS?

    Rephrasing for everyone's sanity...

Why doesn't this game have more character customization?

And to answer that question for anyone who draws conclusions before posting:

Because it is in pre-alpha and they couldn't care less about character models at this stage.  Character customization is coming, but that comes MUCH later in the development process.

Weren't they going to show off character creation soon? Or did they do that already and was it just underwhelming?

"PVP match + Persistent character in procedural map"  I don't know what this means.

"focus in PVP+ Lobby" I haven't seen anything lobby-like about Crowfall yet.  Unless that is the interpretation of the world resetting.

+1.  it certainly is getting to be weirder and weirder and is giving me a headache.   I sometimes feel like I am reading this:

Tom Tucker: Any thoughts on the fight, Floyd?
Floyd Wetherton: I.I.. I think that they are they're gonna have they are gonna be be fightin', D...Deidre's last fight in the contrast to the later one, is gonna be be-better than usually.
Tom Tucker: And how do you think this helps her chances in the fight?
Floyd Wetherton: Well, the match lastin' about up until the particular inaccuracy, particular unusually, that should be the ultimate determining factor in about the 12 round experience, heart of a champion, margarine hat.
Tom Tucker: Well, we'll be watching for that. Well be checking in with you throughout the night, Floyd, and happy 23rd birthday.
    Floyd Wetherton: You're welcome.

Every post I read makes me wonder more and more why I get sucked into these threads.

The OPs question was perfectly sensible despite the odd way it was approached.  Lack of character customization is a legitimate reason for a person to be disappointed.   Some of the core mechanics these developers are looking to implement can be compared directly to a game like league of legends.  To not connect these dots means you have no place to respond, didn't bother to read the OP, or are just exploiting an opportunity to behave aggressively.

The Internet is the best place to display aggression.  There's (usually) little to no consequence.  :P

I have some interest in this game but I haven't done a whole lot of research on it.  I hope they do have a robust character creation system in the works.  I like being able to make many different characters and have them all look completely different, even if they're the same race.

For me, one of the defining characteristics of an MMORPG is that it never "ends" so to say. This game will reboot in set intervals so I guess you could compare it to a long MOBA-match. It's gonna be interesting to see how it works practice.

Talking about MOBAs, some Crowfall campaigns will last much longer than the whole average  MMO attention span (persistent worlds...? image)

I guess you missed all the dev interviews and articles written by mmorpg.com staff. Why not go ahead and take a look at them?

You get a lot of angry internet people in this world, try to ignore them.If they like a game and you make ANY indication you don't like even one thing, they bark out at you like your an idiot.

I'll help you out...They can get mad at me instead.

The game is obviously hiding a lot from us for a good reason. What i see so far look like a BUDGET game design, exactly what i expected from this team.

When they are ready to show us more,i will give it a more FAIR assessment .Hey i have not told them to hide anything from me or anyone else, they are obviously keeping some stuff a secret for a reason.

When i see some large open maps and content that is not just pvp related, then it might warrant some favorable review.

I can tell you this much, offline skills is an automatic -3 in my books,so the game is already at maximum of 7/10.Personally it is worse than that,i would not play a game with automated skills i gave Eve the same D rating because of it.IMo a developer that even thinks along those lines is one i don't want developing a game for me.

Seriously where is the plausible logic?I know we all go to bed every night and wake up rocket scientist,so ya it's plausible i guess.pffft.

There will be character customization. You can change appearance and th archetype can be looked at as a base class. You choose starting stats to set your character apart. Once in the game there are disciplines that will set your character apart as well.

i suggest reading up on http://crowfall.com/#/faq for more info :)

Yet when majority of concerns come from peoples assumptions when they haven't even attempted to find the information. It has been explained more than multiple times (and it reads in the F.A.Q) that characters will be customisable. You can change things like hair, face etc. In addition the game is pre-alpha, they have not made any item sets for characters yet, but they did not want to portray the characters naked, so they made 1 armor model for all characters as a "sample". There was a stream showing creation process of the Duelist archetype model, and there we saw the "naked model" which all archetypes have. The characters will look different with different armors, so even that is nowhere near your Dota/LoL. The next being a lobby one; One campaign is a "server", a server that lasts until it ends or a victory condition is met. These servers all boast a randomly generated maps, so each server will have unique world. These servers will be far from lobbies, as they'll last from months to year(s). In addition lobbies are restricted, once they begin you cannot join them, that is not the case with campaigns in CF.
