I would like to apologize to my readers for my recent grumpiness; I tend to lash out when I feel that gaming and many of its fans are causing the genre more harm than good. If you have kept up with the last two or three years of gaming news, you’ll know why I am so adamant about pressing the opinion that of all of the forces that are hurting the genre, entitled gamers will always be the biggest source of damage.

I tried to find out what kind of genre clash of clans is, but your text never once mentioned it. That's the heart of the problem, people are so busy talking about the MMO part that they don't even mention what genre the game is.
Clash of Clans is basically this:

Except as a city builder instead of an MMORPG.
I don't really see much need to discuss it further than that, honestly. The game isn't really rocket science unless you're using it as a social study (which is IMHO unnecessary since all the social lessons to be learned from it, despite being many and numerous, can be learned from almost any socially successful thing).
Oh yes OBVIOUSLY Clash of Clans is COMMPLEEETTTEEELY relevant to MMOs.
So is Pong, Hearthstone, Chess, Checkers, Hop Scotch... and Solitaire. In fact we might as well start looking forward to the next article, "Why MMO discussions should include Farmville."

yeah, he managed to invalidate anything else he said with that statement. I literally stopped right there.
the only reason an MMO discussion should include anything to do with COC is to discuss how NOT to make your game and treat your playerbase.
And the fact that COC makes so much money, just shows how many absurd gamers there are out there.
best part and only redeeming factor of the article was the random final fantasy advertisement banner in the middle of it.
the biggest source of damage to the mmo sphere are these garbage mobile games.
Snobbery, probably. But thems my feelings on the matter.
RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

No.. Just no.
Netflix makes a lot of money and there are tons of people logged in all the time together..sort of. Doesn't have anything to do with my MMO's just because some people consider it entertainment.
No
CoC makes tons of money using the tried and true technique of hooking in whales. While this is tangentally related to MMORPGs, it's also ABSOLUTELY NOTHING NEW OR UNIQUE. There are TONS of other games, both MMORPGs and other genres, that use similar techniques (including the social aspects of CoC) to hook in whales and make players feel committed and obligated to spend, etc.
Like I said, there are a lot of social lessons which could be learned from CoC that would apply to MMOs, but these are social lessons that tons of other different games have too and thus discussing CoC is rather pointless when there are other games that use similar monetization and skinner box strategies while also being closer to what could be called an actual MMORPG.
....and most of those lessons are flat out stated in R2Games' presentation on whales that I linked to anyways. The only difference for CoC is that they're modified to be within the context of CoC's genre, instead.
Stopped reading after
"Consider this: Clash of Clans is as important to MMO's as an "real" MMO"
So how much did they pay you to talk about their game?
Is that a joke? If not, author's level of knowledge is appalling, as well as inability to google things.
The only thing to learn from Clash of Clans is how to fleece your players for all they're worth. Well okay, they do some of the social aspects pretty well, from what I've read elsewhere. Plus I couldn't help but chuckle at your little list of what people hate. It reads like a litany of grievances aired by some of the older crowd which spends its time posting here. Pretty much every game released in the last five to ten years is said to suffer from at least two of those problems.
Also, please tell me you actually know what roguelike means, and your little comment was a joke...
AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

I played Clash of clans almost every day for about 6 months before I finally stopped completely due to the grind. Its the best mobile game I have played, but I'll admit I've only played a dozen or so. It was really fun having clan wars with RL buddies and making sure everybody attacks and coordinating who attacks who. Hooking it up to the apple TV to broadcast it was pretty awesome as well. But to me, in the end it was another grind and I already have so many of those in other MMO games.
Overall, CoC is a great game for mobile devices and it does have a MASSIVE community, its one of the reasons why Disney completely copied them when they made 'Star Wars: Commander', another great mobile game. Blizzard also has been watching Supercell and I wouldn't be surprised if their next foray into mobile gaming is a base builder type game similar to CoC.
