[Column] General: Hanging Our RPG Hopes on Sword Coast Legends

There’s no denying that the Baldur’s Gate series is foundational in the evolution of single-player RPGs.  The gameplay in Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn, along with their expansions, inspired a generation of isometric RPGs, including genre favorites Planescape: Torment and the Icewind Dale series.  Thematically, these games also gave rise to spiritual successors Neverwinter Nights and pretty much every Bioware title thereafter, along with a number of indie games that have sought to recreate the zeitgeist around the original releases.

I'd love to see a next-gen rendition of the genre.  I have fond memories of late night adventuring in Bioware's RPG portfolio of games.  I thought BG2 was the best out of the selection for length, complexity of story, and the degree to which they fully utilized all the tools and monsters that the Dungeons and Dragons world potentially had.

If SCL can scratch a 1/3 of that I will be impressed.

So what is an amazing example of a 3D isometric fantasy RPG worth playing right now that has decent graphics?

Last one I really played was Neverwinter Nights.

I mean, I've spent a lot of time in Diablo 3 but that isn't quite what we're going for here.

Pretty sure it is going to PS4 and XBO.

@BadSpock Pillars of Eternity looks great from what I have seen. A real throwback but with newer graphics. Although it doesn't follow D&D rules strictly speaking, it still looks great.

Sword Coast looks like it will be a good game, I will almost certainly buy it.

I just with they would do the same thing using Pathfinder rules.

    Divinity Original sin.

    Non-fantasy.. Wasteland 2.

    Both are great games IMO

Its a step in the right direction, but I would literally THROW money at a modern remake or successor to NWN (especially the ability to host and customise servers).

This and Shards are currently the nearest we get, but its a good step in a direction I want to see more of.

You already ruined Dragon Age with your crappy consoles, this belongs on PC only.

Dump those toys and get a real gaming machine.

To even compete with Baldur's Gate and Torment, they need to nail the story, nail the atmosphere, nail the NPCs, and nail the character building.   Neverwinter Nights failed at several of those points but it had the editor to save it.

I really hope they nail it.  I'd love a new epic RPG with the scope and quality of those old classics.
