My first step into PoFear. Moved 8 steps forward and was 3 shot by a rat. You feared death in EQ back then. Plane of Fear indeed.

My first experience when I was a lowly 16th season ranger. I was trying to explore new hunting grounds and wanted to check out the halfling village area. Growing up in kelethin and not seeing much of the world, I knew the journey would be long and treacherous. Forgetting to bind close to my destination, I had no idea how dangerous kithicor forest was at night! Needless to say it ended in lots of /shouts looking for help trying to find my corpse and waiting until daytime. It was both frustrating and thrilling at the same time! I miss games that can give you that feeling and adrenaline rush that original everquest gave me as a new online gamer.

I have never played any EverQuest, but I have heard the original was amazing for its day. I played Asheron's Call and DAOC back in the day and made many fond memories in those games. If I had a 30-day all access pass I might just give EQ a shot, and who knows, maybe I would make some memories to post about on MMORPG.com at that point.

Camping graschnist the destroyer for his rare clicky earings, when everybody wanted a neat clicky effect. Saved up enough for a fungi tunic, which made the game 10x less wait and 11x more fun

Lower Guk camping the frenzied ghoul was always such a gut wrenching task during the original game. The pulls could be enough to wipe the group, and the people getting lost down there and subsequently training you was always interesting. The FBSS was few and far between, however, it was always a great payoff.

My first Druid out of Kelethen made the transition to Butcher Block to hand in CB belts.  During the exploration I found myself at the Chessboard.   After talking with a very nice lady named Mistymorn I had my first guild invite to Mithril Warhammers.

I was playing a Dark Elf and my friend wanted to play a Troll. With no maps, or wiki to use back then I spent hours finding my way to the swamps, running and dying many times to get to his newbe area so we could play together. Was an adventure.

Playing the original tutorial that came on disk where all you could do is jump around through a little grassy area. This is what I did on patch days (they used to take all day, or two).

Prior to the release of EverQuest, or at least when I started in 99' --- I had played primarily shooter games such as Quake II at the time with my brother in law. So one weekend he arrives with a copy in hand, saying I have to try this new game.. So I did..

Spent the entire night fishing at that pond outside the paladins guild on the docks sitting next to a halfling doing the same thinking we were going to score a fortune soon... Alas, all night long well into the morning -- I think the biggest thing caught was a pair of cloth sandals. I still remember that feeling of excitement from such odd encounter as if it were yesterday!

The next one I can't seem to forget was spending a week and half getting established on that character.. newbie armor.. weapons.. just starting to fight at the orc camps in the ECOMMONS! .. when my brother in law had the great idea of setting out for qeynos to get a .. "Fine Steel Short Sword" that his ex-quake 2 buddy had offered us. Some hours later, we actually did make it ... received the fine steel short sword, returned to the freeport area... This is where his 2nd great idea came to be revealed to go to this "Awesome leveling spot in Upper Guk" as a lv9-12 monk, and paladin duo... needless to say, we got lost.. I fell down a ladder and became the victim of a 60+ (?)  Froglok train ...

I never did see that fine steel short sword again ...... Argh. :)

In lower guk I witnessed a monk feign death train half the zone onto all the afk people at the entrance. To this day I still laugh thinking about it.

Running from Halas to BlackBurrow and as soon as I entered the Blackburrow zone on my character, was met with a gnoll train from hell that slaughtered me and sent me straight back to the frozen wasteland.

Only played to level 10 with my husband and just said no. I did enjoy the fact you had a real spell book and had to scribe new spells. It really did feel more magical.

It's hard to think of just one. I think I'd say the Shaman epic 1.5, Ancient Megalodon. I had nightmares for a month after that and it still gives me chills thinking about it.

At launch, first death, trying to hail an NPC and accidently attacking when hitting the A key. Most people did it, most won't admit to it.

It's the summer of 1999. Back home from University, I load up this new game I've heard about, Everquest.

I create my first character, Kallamon Ragingwind, a wood elf ranger. Spending a few hours becoming familiar with the game and starting to grow attached to my avatar, I hear that everyone is hanging out in Freeport. I unfold the map from the CD package and start my journey across the Faydark and Butcherblock. I get a massive feeling of accomplishment making it to the docks, waiting 10 minutes  for the boat to arrive, and then finally boarding.

The scenery is amazing. I'm sailing in this zone called Ocean of Tears. It's awesome. I become my avatar for the first time in my gaming life. I see a small island with mermaids off in the distance. Split decision; I jump off the boat and swim over to investigate. I die horribly.

After approximately 4 hours of retracing my steps from Greater Faydark and searching through Ocean of Tears for my body, I grow so angry that I quit, delete the character, and uninstall the game.

Fast forward; It's the summer of 2000. Back home from University, I load up this game, Everquest.

I create my second character, Kallamon Ragingwind, a wood elf druid. I go on to create 5 years worth of the best gaming memories I will ever have...

I remember logging into Everquest for the first time in 1999 with my newly made woodelf druid. This was the first time I ever played an MMO and I remember being totally lost as what to do. I got lost in the starter area and pretty much died to the first mob I saw. I am glad to say I am not a noob to MMO's now, but that is how I remember Everquest.
  • Apoch01Apoch01 Member UncommonPosts: 5

So many memories from that game, from Trains in Unrest to camping D'Vinn, but the one that stands out most was first time into Grieg's End... when all the mobs started changing.. it was like playing and having an acid trip at the same time.

I just remember our Tank yelling "WTF just happened!?!?!?!?!" and everyone started rolling

My best friend and I started together on Innoruuk as soon as the server went live.

He rolled an Erudite Necro and I rolled a High Elf Paladin.

We had no idea the epic travail ahead of us simply to group together.

Here I was a level 1 Pally all bushy tail and bright eyed all excited over an amazing new game heading off to join my buddy for some epic Kerran hunting ( think they were level 5's ).

Now remember at the time there was nobody on the server that could even bind yet, so if you died you were all the way back to your starting city.

    6 hours later after :

After the agro educational run and rerun through Butcherblock Mountains

A very long and buggy boat ride across the Ocean of  Tears. ( 3rd boat drop out trust me I was crying )

Not so friendly visit to the city of Freeport.

A visit to the much more friendly city of Rivervale.

Finding my way through Runnyeye Citadel for the first time without dying mind you (got a few kind halflings to pull agro for me)

Finding my way through the Gorge of King Xorbb ( epic first on the server wall hanging run )

My jaw hanging awe inspiring run through the Karanas ( Giants and Griffons oh my )

A rather interesting run through the streets of Qeynos.

Another much shorter but equally bugged boat ride across Erud's Crossing

I finally arrive in the Erudin city of Paineel.

After tracking down my buddy we head out to hunt some Kerrans!

    First pull BAM!! dead..

ALL the way back to Felwithe I go.

Needless to say I immediately rerolled as a Woodie Druid for the bind and ports.

The moment i loaded up the game and entering faydwer as my high elf paladin. glorious to see how they made all those maps and animations back in 1999. Its because of EQ im a huge fan of the genre. But sadly enough it never met an equal.

    This is great! LMAO.

I once fell off the boat in the ocean of tears. Died in the ocean. This was on my little Halfling Druid. I spent an entire week swimming back and forth through that zone hitting my /corpse macro.

I ended up finding my corpse! Then a bit later found out that a necromancer could have summoned it for me. :P

A friend and I once spent 2 months and 1 week in Permafrost. We literally didn't step foot outside of the dungeon the entire time. We had a wizard buddy would would teleport in and carry out our loot and bring us food and drink. We were camping the elite honor guard for the Silvery War Axe. Can't even remember why. Some of the best times for me in EQ.

I had been playing for a few days by myself when a random stranger asked me if I wanted to join their guild.  After asking what a guild was, I said "OK, what the heck."  They then invited me to their group and took me into the Blackburrow dungeon for the first time.  That was the point where I "got it" and Everquest became more then just a game.  I stayed with that guild throughout my time in Norath and made many good friends and had many great and fun experiences.  This comraderie is something I have yet to find in any other MMO I've played since.

When I logged in for the first time, and seeing NPC's walking around and talking, I was literally blown away! I was hooked from that moment and have not looked back on MMO's.

I am so good, I backstabbed your face!
