Greetings fellow MMOers!
As the topic states I'm looking for an MMORPG where max level is actually an achievement and not something that can be grinded within a week or even a month.
I would like to be able to walk around in the game, see a max level player and actually feel a slight tremor of awe.
That is basically my only requirement (except I want graphics, MUDs I allready play a few of)
Any suggestions?

I was actually looking at that today, but as I stumbled upon their website I noticed that the last news item was from early 2014 so is the game still doing well considering?
Do you have any preference for graphic style or age of the game? I cannot think of a single MMORPG that was released in the past few years that matches this description. All of the newer MMOs pride themselves in catering to casuals and have really easy to obtain max levels.
If you are willing to go back in time and play a game that came out over a decade ago, then I have a few options for you:
Ragnarok Online - http://iro.ragnarokonline.com (Free to play /w cash shop)
- Cutesy graphics, but a hell of a game in my opinion. The game is based on a lot of grinding, but it doesn't feel like a chore as much as some other games. There is also some really fun PVP content available in the form of War of Emperium, which is GvG.
Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds - http://www.nexustk.com (Free to try, $9.95/mo after level 49)
- One of the very first MMORPGs. The original game started with 99 levels, but after obtaining level 99 you then "sell" your experience for additional HP and MP. Over the years a few more "levels" were added in the form of marks which take a minimum of 400 days to achieve even if you grind experience 18 hours a day. There is also some very fun PVP content available in the form of "Carnage" events. I have played this one on and off for 15 years, and I still keep coming back even now because the game has a lasting hold on me. The population could be better, but it is healthy enough to do what you want to do.
Here are the breakpoints for selling experience:
Level 99 - Stats are around 5,000 HP and 5,000 MP
Il San - 160,000 HP -or- 80,000 MP
EE San - 320,000 HP -or- 160,000 MP
Sam San - 640,000 HP -or- 320,000 MP
Sa San - 1,280,000 HP -or- 640,000 MP
Asheron's Call - http://asheronscall.com (Buy to Play $10, no sub fee)
- Came out around the same time as Everquest, but didn't get the same attention back then. Max level is 275, which takes quite a while if you are new and don't use a bot. There are PVE and Open PVP servers available. The game is now "Buy to Play" as of last year, so all it would cost you is $10 to check out permanently. Was a great time for me when I used to play it.
Playing - Minecraft, 7 Days To Die, Darkfall:ROA, Path of Exile

Everquest.
Plenty of people will be max, but the game just had its 16th anniversary, so that is to be expected. If you start now the first say....1/3 - 1/2 of the levelspectrum will go pretty fast. They wanted to speed that up to not make the gap too huge.
After about level 50-60 it slows down. You also will need to improve your toon in other ways then level, just to beat any xp giving mob. This starts to kick in full force around level 70. At 80 killing a mob with only your level, without gear, ability points ect. will proove to be a challenge for every class, even the most solo friendly class. And you still have more levels to go from there.
So yes. Id say EQ, far away from its former glory, still gives the most sence of achivement for hitting max level. It is not a grind tho. It is fun all the way. There are DOZENS of zones and dungeons for every of its 105 levels. You never have to stay in one place if you don't like it.
MMOs finally replaced social interaction, forced grouping and standing in a line while talking to eachother.
Now we have forced soloing, forced questing and everyone is the hero, without ever having to talk to anyone else. The evolution of multiplayer is here! We won,... right?
Thanks for the thorough answers!
I will definitly buy AC then and I will install EQ and might give Ragnarok a try as well.
Excellent suggestions!
Was about to suggest that as well. Only think OP should keep in mind that 1-85 can be done in a week (I did it in 6 years back in the days), and 85-100 will take quite a long time (a year or so). With the new expansion, the max level will be removed completely.
Only bad thing about Lineage II is the botting and 3rd party (PvP) cheating in the game and GMs not doing a thing about it
An other suggestion for OP might be EverQuest II. Though you can hit max pretty quick, you can lower your progression big-time by setting the Alternate Advancement pretty high. Doing so also opens up a lot of other perks as well...
EVE Online :P
"going into arguments with idiots is a lost cause, it requires you to stoop down to their level and you can't win"
Everquest.
It will take you years to reach max level & max AA.

EQII is my preferred game for simply turning XP off and questing. It's tradeskill system is better than the one in Everquest and its graphics are more up to date.
For pure character mechanics, Everquest is still the better game.

Haven't played it in years but I second this suggestion.
Asheron's Call went to a one time fee of $9.95 last year. They are stopping with the monthly updates and will close the game down eventually, but they are releasing the source to allow people to create private servers for the game once the official servers are shut down. Before the announcement was made last year, Turbine had kept up with monthly updates to the game ever since it was released. There is sooooooo much content to go through at this point, it would keep you busy until the servers close no problem. Not a bad investment at all, in my opinion.

Try out perfect world. they took out exp instance and gave aditional reborns. you can get to lvl 105, reborn twice and lvl again to max lvl. It took few months of insane farming when exp instance was there, now it will take more time. Now max reborns are 2, but system is made for 10 reborns so it will come in future. If reborn at max lvl u also gain more stats, some people reborn earlier and only few have gotten full 3x105, most people reborn earlier and miss out some bonus stats. Endgame gear will make u tremble even more, it will take a year to farm a set and then a year to refine it to max. Most people doesn't even bother with best gear and gets cheaper sets.
Game is old, but graphics still seem nice(atleast for me).
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.
Try eve or eso, would take years to get to max level in either.
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D
Seeing as how I didn't notice anyone mention it, when you purchase Asheron's Call, you also get access to Asheron's Call 2, it's max level is slightly lower @ 150 but it is not even achievable due to content limitations so the actual max you could realistically hit would be around 105. Even still that cap would take anywhere from a bare minimum of 6 months to a couple of years depending on playtime. Well worth the download since you will have purchased both and depending on who you talk to it's a better game than AC.

Thanks for all the replies!
I've started a new char in EQ, bought AC and installed it and I am always playing EVE
AO is definitly on my list as well.
