General: The Daily Quest: Is Spielberg Right for "Ready Player One"?

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

Now that Steven Spielberg has been announced as the director for Ready Player One, is he the right man for the job? Personally, I am going to go with a big resounding "YES!" I know a lot of people talk about how he hasn't had very many great movies in recent years but if you think about the era of video games and pop culture that the book is about, Steven Spielberg is one of only a few people at the forefront of entertainment during that era.

So today's daily quest is a simple one: Do you think Steven Spielberg is the right man to direct Ready Player One, a movie about the future of our video game worlds? If not Spielberg, then who would you like to see behind the camera?

And let's add a part two to today's daily quest: Who should be the main actors in the movie? Personally, I think Jeff Bridges should play Og but the rest of the cast I'm open to suggestions for.

Ok Bill lets just see if we understand you. "in recent years" as you put it, equals the last decade or more??

I think Edgar Wright is the better choice for this type of movie. Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs the World.

Hmm... IDK, can't Woz act? :)

    Spielberg is good news.

What makes Spielberg a great choice, IMO, is that he was at his best in the 80s so the culture references etc. are a natural for him. :)

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is great news. With Spielberg at the helm, getting the rights to use all the 80s references should make it alot easier. Big question is will they be able to get the rights to Rush, Max Headroom, and Ultraman. As these are the 3 that are used throughout the book.

As for the cast, i hope he goes with newcomers for the 4 kids. Much like he did for Goonies way back when.

I wouldnt use Jeff Bridges for Og since that character is way to much like Flynn from Tron and we dont need him playing that character yet again. Specially with the announcement that Tron 3 is moving ahead now. I wouldnt mind Hugh Laurie (House) for the part though.

For James Halliday, I think Tom Cavanagh (Ed, the Flash) would be a good fit. They could just use makeup to make him look much older for the Real World scenes.

See, I don't think Wright works here. Ready Player One, despite the game and nerd culture premise, is VERY serious stuff. I don't think Wright could do that, while still holding an era of mystique and grandeur displaying the world of OASIS.

I think he is ready for a more serious fantasy movie. That said, if speilberg can deliver an 80s themed, minority report type vibe, with a dash of ai, it'll be amazing.

Speilberg, frankly no. He has a thing where all his kids are always so "cutesy", too pure, too innocent, lacking in realism. Sorry unless he can get past that tendency that all his movies have, the archetypal "cutesy kids", then no.

Pretty sure the entire cast of "Goonies" would disagree with you about all his kids being so "cutesy", too pure, too innocent, and lacking realism.

As a director, he can do it. With a good team of camera men, he will do good. If he writes anything or has any say in the script, he is the worst choice. He is an incredibly poor writer.

Won't this break the "video games" taboo b/c he is behind it?

Will be interesting to see what happens.

Speilburg... Hrm I dunno.. if this was the 70's - 80's I would have no issues... However after the debacle of SeaQuest DSV season 2+ and other issues with cast and crew complaints about his usually not being on set to even produce the shows hes working on its a crap shoot.

Are there better choices? hell I dunno.. I am not really a fan of movies produced today...Gratuitous Violence, Shallow Characters,  and  censorship are a major flaw in our current entertainment block. Anyone doing this movie would have a bitch of a time making a quality movie that would even closely resemble the book.

Hell lets hope they dont leave a lot of the meat and potatoes out of the story line and development like they did the Harry Potter movies.... Sure not everyone likes HP, and they probably have good reason to. However when comparing the books to the movies the movies leave out so much information they are basically different stories throughout.

If it is Speilburg I would like to see him do this right.. After hes done with Falling Skies. I wouldnt want him "distracted" so much that hes not focusing like what happened with Seaquest DSV.

Played: UO, LotR, WoW, SWG, DDO, AoC, EVE, Warhammer, TF2, EQ2, SWTOR, TSW, CSS, KF, L4D, AoW, WoT

Playing: The Secret World until Citadel of Sorcery goes into Alpha testing.

Tired of: Linear quest games, dailies, and dumbed down games

    Anticipating:Citadel of Sorcery

Indeedily-doodily.  It'll need it.  It seems to me IP rights are going to be a major issue.  I'm no fair use rights expert, but it seems to me they're gonna need a crapton money for legal work, or they're going to have to "genericize" some important plot points.
