It was pretty broken last time I played. I mean crafting didnt really work. Sieges apparently were lag fests and there was nothing really to do but combat and quests. I liked it at first but I left when everyone else did after the first 3 months.
It's a great game with (imo) fantastic combat system. I did buy the expansion and went back with intention of sticking around but the boss fights were so buggy I dropped it instantly.
The same reason why I don't like TSW, Funcom seems to very reluctant to give rat's behind about new players coming into the pvp scene. The power creep is just transcendentally insane, every step they take with implementing new content increases the power level and grind level by a seemingly exponential factor. I noticed they tried to fix it in AoC and include an incentive to sub by giving you AA for levelling up. That's okay, I guess.
I had a greatish time there, rping and pvping. But now that I live in Europe the game here is experiencing a dearth of players, let alone english speaking players. Get my drift yeah... And maybe they've fixed it but I had a bit of a problem in 2013 trying to win halls because of rampant tp hacking with the flag.
I played it for a year or so but I tired of how slowly the added content to the game. I came back a month when the expansion came out but then I had other games to play.
It is not a bad game at all, but first the bad launch and how slowly they update the game (which partly seems to do with the engine) took out a lot of players for them.
Also the combat system was a good idea from start but the implementation didn't really work out, when they originally talked about it it sounded more "Soul calibur".
The collision detection it uses is top notch though.
Maybe i still posted it in this thread which is 4 years old, but i don't play AoC because Funcom still owes me 49,99.
I preordered the game back then on what Gaute, Ellingson and Thorvaldsen said would be in it in their various pre-launch interviews and videos. Most of the stuff never went into the game, so i guess i've just been scammed.
Back then, Funcom had temporarily taken over this website. There wasn't a day without a feature, a PR spin interview of notoriously lying Ellingson or another column about AoC and a huge ad campaign. So stating that we've been lied to also granted you an insta-ban.
Ah, good old days...but then, not much has really changed -except for some studio's names i'd say it's pretty much like that until today.
The reason I hardly play is because it's either virtually pvp-less or a free for all. I don't enjoy either. I don't raid and I only really like pve in single player games, so I play mmos fir PvP, but PvP with meaning. Faction based open world PvP...screw pve and ffa is brain dead nonsense.
I was going to come back and play once they offered the free character transfer after the server merges, since my character is stranded on the Fury server which is dead. I gave up waiting for them to offer the free transfer and stopped following the game for a year or so. I just checked back today and the free character transfer was only offered for a short period of time which I missed. I'm not about to pay 20 dollars to transfer my character when I don't know how much longer this game will be around.
They should have given everyone 1 free transfer that they could use whenever they wanted. I guess my character will continue to rot on Fury.
Why don't more people play Age of Conan ? I know it had a bad start but it's pretty nice now. It has the best grafix by far +Carnage, blood, fatalities, naked breast's, and in my opinion, the bet starting area, finest combat structure and least boring quest of all. The raids are fun and the expansion was nice. The planned content sounds good to. I have played Aion and beta tested Rift, DCU, and others but never found a replacement for this game......So my question is why don't you play? ....Poor PC ? Sour from launch ? Not enough advertising or hype ?
When you say "I know it had a bad start" this makes me feel like you didn't get into the game until much later. Well, for me, I bought a whole new PC specifically to be able to play this game on the max settings. As a HUGE fan of Conan stories, from books to graphic novels I was hyped to say the least and my body was ready for it.
Heck, when I got into the BETA and played the starting area of Tortage I was so in love, so excited. Then... then the game released and that's when the fun stopped.
The game was in no shape or form ready to be released. Tortage was fine, but beyond there pretty much every other quest was bugged, dungeons were bugged, assets were missing, it was not optimised, many many MANY quests were not in the game, Fields of Dead or whatever it was called had not a single quest, as did a few zones, they were for the most part barren.
The game also used to make my computer BSOD on occasion, randomly crash and lock up my PC where I had to CTRL ALT and DEL to get it operating again. The game was beyond broke it really was, the only things that kept me played were 1) I loved Conan 2) I lliked the story direction. But the game was horrible. So very very bad.
I manage to level 2 characters to max, the Bear Shaman and the Archer or whatever its called and that was enogh for me. But Funcom just suck at managing their games. They have great ideas, but their execution is just piss poor.
When AoC went free to play, I did try and get into it again but their premium model made it unplayable for me. For example, I ran out of inventory space for loot in the freaking tutorial and I was not going to "buy" into the game if I can't even do the tutorial without restrictions, I was hoping to push past Tortage to see what the game was like, but guess what... couldn't even freaking play my max characters because they had now been locked behind a bloody pay wall.
So, I could re-roll (which is what I did) or pay to unlock my characters which I was not prepared to do at that time as I had left for good reason.
Yes, I know the game has had improvements, yes I know they fixed things, but its too little too late they had a MASSIVE audience for this game enough to really keep the game subbed and ticking for many years, but because Funcom are so piss poor at managing and so piss poor in their honest towards gamers they effectively missed the boat and wrecked the game, leaving it to the dedicated few only.
Im still so pissed at them about this game, especially considering that its success would of meant a much more polished The Secret World which was also ANOTHER fantastic game with good ideas that has ultimately suffered due to poor management.
I just wish a big company would buy them out, do a Square-Enix and rebuild and make it much more viable and attractive to a new audience, because like you say, the combat is pretty decent.
As for the breasts part, if I need to see them I'll look at my girl friends, or the internet, heck im looking at some right now. The only thing I respect them about is that the nudity fit the tone of the game and didn't try and censor themselves.
Anyhow THAT's why I don't play the game, with good reason.
After posting on the official forums that I wanted to come back and play but wouldn't until they allowed free transfers, because my character was stranded on the dead Fury server, the mods disabled my ability to post on their forums. How lame. I guess my Age of Conan days are officially over.

I know you posted this two weeks ago, but I only drop by these forums a couple times a month so I just wanted to reply now.
I also bought a new PC to play this game, but honestly most of us needed new PC's when this game came out. Between Crysis and Age of Conan people were starting to learn that games could look amazing if they just had the hardware to handle it.
I'm sorry, but every other quest was not bugged. There were two quests in the Wild Lands of Zelata that were bugged. Neither of which would slow anyone's progress at all especially since there are THREE lvl 20-30 zones in the game. If you did all three before they patched "grey" quest experience, then you could be level 40 before you hit the 30-40 zone.
The Field of the Dead had TONS of quests. Especially in the haunted forest. None of which were broken. I remember very vividly leveling my Necromancer through that area.
However! There was a real gap of leveling between 55-60 which meant that once you finished all the Atzels quests, then you might be forced to grind mobs for hours on end to be able to travel to Kheshetta. That has since been remedied because they later added in an entirely new 55-60 zone, Ymir's Pass, with one of the most eye candy, mind blowing dungeons in the game; Ampitheater. If you've never experience ampitheater, then go download the game and play it. It's one of the best looking dungeons in any game, there's even a level 80 mode so you can keep experiencing it past level cap.
It had a bad memory leak which would gobble up all your memory and then cause a BSOD within an hour or two depending on how much memory you had available. This was patched very early on. I was able to game for 6+ hours after they fixed it with no issues. These days I can play for 10+ hours and never experience an issue.
I manage to level 2 characters to max, the Bear Shaman and the Archer or whatever its called and that was enogh for me. But Funcom just suck at managing their games. They have great ideas, but their execution is just piss poor.
Bear Shaman is the best class in the game now. It requires more thought and skill from the player than most classes and quite a bit of micromanagement, but if you can think quickly on your feet, then the Bear Shaman is like bringing a toolbox to a raid. So much utility.
The ranger on the other hand was revamped into total crap. It's a 4 button rotation over and over for max class DPS and has no utility. Raids can get by without rangers at all. PVP is where rangers shine from what I've heard. They have a couple of abilities that make them extremely annoying such as a one shot kill ability that procs somewhat randomly.

Yes, AoC's F2P model really sucks. It's nowhere near as evil or backstabbing as SWTOR's F2P model. Go try both of them and you'll realize that AoC's is actually pretty lenient.
The absolute worst part is that people who PAID for the expansion are not allowed to enter those zones without subscribing. That's just inexcusable and people have been asking them change it for years. Those requests are repeatedly ignored.
It's really not too little to late dude. They made MASSIVE changes to the game within the first year. They even went on a highly accelerated patching schedule of every two weeks after release to fix the issues.
Now, I have MY reasons that I've quit playing AoC, but I didn't quit until after six years of on-again / off-again raiding. If you haven't gone back to this game as a subscriber and done some of the tougher six man dungeons, or experienced the Tier 3 Thoth Amon raid, then do yourself a favor give it another real chance... but yes you'll have to subscribe.
Im still so pissed at them about this game, especially considering that its success would of meant a much more polished The Secret World which was also ANOTHER fantastic game with good ideas that has ultimately suffered due to poor management.
Almost 8 years is a helluva grudge dude. Let it go!
I just wish a big company would buy them out, do a Square-Enix and rebuild and make it much more viable and attractive to a new audience, because like you say, the combat is pretty decent.
You and me both. I want FunCom to just die already and have someone with some assets and power swoop in to rescue and revive both AoC and TSW. For heavens sake, just do some ADVERTISING for them. FunCom has no clue how to advertise their titles.
How many of you even KNOW that they have a brand new LEGO MMO on the market? Almost no one I talk to is remotely aware of it. In the age of social media that's just a damned tragedy since they could have tons of advertising basically for free.
As for the breasts part, if I need to see them I'll look at my girl friends, or the internet, heck im looking at some right now. The only thing I respect them about is that the nudity fit the tone of the game and didn't try and censor themselves.
Anyhow THAT's why I don't play the game, with good reason.
I really don't think your reasons are that good anymore. If the reason that so many people aren't playing AoC is because it had a bad launch EIGHT YEARS AGO, then boy do gamers hold some silly grudges.
The game is 100% playable now and it has a vastly deeper combat and raiding system than any other MMO on the market. T4 raiding is mind blowingly difficult; so much so that only a couple of top guilds clear it weekly.
That needs to change. The game needs lots of smart, experienced raiders from other games to come back and down this incredibly challenging and rewarding raid content.
I came back to AoC about a year and a bit ago. I bought the x-pac and then found out that in order to access 90% of the content I had just purchased, I had to have an active sub. So I resubbed for a month. I lasted 2 maybe 3 weeks into the sub before uninstalling. The dev's no longer care. The game is (as was stated earlier) in full maintenance mode. Very little in the way of valid changes. There have been promises made of the vague "Things to come", that have been nothing but lip service since the game went live. As it stands right now, if you want to play the game as a F2P you have no access to the x-pac stuff other than the starter zone (if you bought it that is). Even those of us who paid for the expansion are not able to access it unless we are paying a monthly sub. That essentially makes 1/2 the game unaccessable to the F2P folks.
They have also made certain raids and dungeons only open to those who pay. If you want to gain entry as a F2P player you can find a token or writ or whatever it is nowadays to allow one time entry, from the cash shop. Want to play that level 50 bear shaman on your account that they locked? Cash Shop. Want to learn new skills? Cash Shop. Better spells? Cash Shop. Almost every form of convenience is listed on their cash shop.
Everything as a F2P player is severely limited. No access to the new zones, no access to certain dungeons and raids, no access to prior characters etc. They are milking AoC to pay for their other games and have let this one came to a near standstill.

Played the game a lot. Love the fatalities. In the end I think they should have raised the level cap when they released the khitai expansion.

I love that game! But I stopped playing because all the developers seem not to give a crap about the game anymore...
It is dead both in population and in development.
I will not support a game that was left to die and is in maintenance mode.
