[Column] Guild Wars 2: ArenaNet Wants You to be Legendary

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The weapon is considered to be one of the most important aspects of a character.  Sure your armor makes you look great, while also keeping those arrows from piercing your lungs, but the weapon you wield is what really strikes fear into the heart of your enemies.  The legendary weapons in Guild Wars 2 are seen as a sign of great prowess, marking one as a member of the elite.  But soon that status may extend to more players.

Rich players must have a hard time getting around.

I think its a great move. Honestly, the game has never really been about "endgame", and was never all that challenging. You get to 80 in 3-4 days, by the time you are done, you already have a full set of exotic armor, and you are as set as you need to be to compete with other players.

Legendaries have always been an artificial way to provide longevity to a game that has no vertical progression, since they have never offered a stat boost or advantage, just cosmetics. Now with new ascended stuff adding a grind (and a daily cd timer for crafting), Legendaries are no longer needed for that role. Anet is letting players who wanted to get them, have them, still with no advantage other than purely cosmetics, and providing a long road to still drag out the longevity of the game. With the addition of all new "notrade" precursors and Legendary weapons to show off all the hard work you put into the game.

Personally, I have sold every precursor I have ever gotten. Never had a desire for a Legendary, since I dont care much for cosmetic changes. I use the gold I get from the sale to buy gems which has fueled all my upgrades in the game for free. Now I can craft one of each precursor, make one of each Legendary to fulfill the "endgame" and still sell any further precursors I continue to get. Im all for the change.

    You're joking, right?

Nothing about GW2's Legendaries is..legendary.  I could go out today, open my wallet, buy a truckload of Gems in their Cash Store, and buy 1, 2, or as many as I could afford.  It's a meaningless skin, in a game that is completely centered around shallow cosmetics.

Yes they look nice but I never felt the need for one as I could do everything I wanted without one.  Great prowess should be saved for the battle field.  Who's gonna spend $600 on a legendary?

I also always sold any materials that could otherwise have been used to craft a legendary. Bar a few exceptions, all of those items were also FUGLY in my opinion.

Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

Nothing strikes fear into the heart of your enemies like My Little Pony bows, Party Favor pistols, and disco ball maces, among others. Except for Incinerator and Predator, I can't say I like them, and even then, not one of them fits well with a Necromancer. The whole idea behind their themes has never appealed to me. I've never had any desire whatsoever to waste my time acquiring one.

legendary is all about fluffy plus to make legendarys you already have to explore the world, guess only advantage on having a legeandary is if anet launch a new grade after ascended, then you don't need to worry about collecting mats to make it, but serious save for teh twilight I don't really even notice anyone else using a legendary or not, again it all about fluffy
FOR HONOR, FOR FREEDOM.... and for some money.

Well, the new legendaries seems to be accountbound on crafting at least which is good news.

The bad news for me is that I finally just have gotten all those mats collected and now they plan to make them easier to get :(

    Easier?

Legendaries were always just a grind with a lot of RNG. Also it wil actually be harder to get a legendary unless you have all the mats saved. Because now you will be competing against everybody for a legendary not just the few.

i havent played a current mmorpg where legendary gear represent how much blood and sweat the player put into earning them. They all are about the grinding process to get them.

Im personally happy ANET is doing this change if they do it right. If the journey to get a legendary in any mmo is not an epic journey, then just make it easy to get them and skip the grind.

Sounds like it's a way to get a precursor. You may still need the mats to craft the legendary.

Given the list of what is required for a legendary weapon's creation I've just resigned myself to never having one. And with such I've moved on to other free to play titles for entertainment until the expansion launches. Which I want rather badly.

You don't have the grind to make your precursor.. you just play the game. You know, since it's a random chance of getting it from almost all aspects of endgame. It's actually impossible to grind for them.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Recently some streamer started playing GW2 and was donated so much gold that he bought a legendary. He was so new that he didn't even know what which profession does. Even if new legendaries would require only grind it will be still better b/c when you see one you will know that at least that guy spend some time with a game.

They do have some great ideas.  Being able to bring up the auction house at any time to sell stuff from your inventory I love.  Also the low price of using waypoints is great.  With games that over do the gold sink thing I may play for awhile but will never stay with them as I don't like spending 98 gold to port or having so few waypoints it takes awhile just to get to one.  Less grinding means more time doing what you enjoy.
