[Column] General: The Witcher Will Take Hundreds of Hours To Complete

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Year of the RPG continues to steam along with more and more quality titles releasing as the months march along. This week is no exception, with new titles coming out and old favorites being updated. Add in a dash of general news about some and it works out to another great week for RPG fans.

Chris is off this week, so Suzie's filling his rather big nerdy shoes with a wrap-up of the week's news in RPG-land.

"This week, The Witcher III: The Wild Hunt Senior Game Designer Damien Monnier revealed on Twitter that the game should take a completionist about 200 hours to get the job done. This includes fifty hours of the main story arc quests and fifty hours of side quests."

I'll just wait for you to get it...

How many hours will be boring fetch & kill quests ala Dragon Age 3?

I'd rather have 5 more hours of quality main story content than 50 hours of stupid side quests.

I can't be alone in that thinking either. Oh how easily the stunted masses are swayed by such statements as "Bigger! Longer! Faster!"

50 hours main story. That's fine.

While I generally agree with you, I don't have a "completionist's" heart so the 50 hours of the main story are A-OK with me. The dollar to hours spent seems pretty spot on. :)

I guess it depends on how annoying it is.

Skyrim? Not at all annoying, just ignore the quest log as you've got 1 indicator on your screen pointing to objective, or just mod the thing off.

Dragon Age III? OMG I couldn't handle it. Just FILLED with little side crap and indicators towards other side crap and a main story you can't progress without first doing appropriate amount of side crap... no thanks.

GW2 really had this problem too - map completion requiring every POI and Vista and Heart... ugh.

But yeah, if the main narrative is good and truly 50+ hours and the side crap isn't required in any way and easy to completely ignore (no ! hanging over everyone's head) then we'll see ;)

And how long without the un-ending dialogue with NPC's? That is what ruined the WII for me.

I haven't really done the research, but I'll be very disappointed if all of these 'hours' will be taken up doing quests. I get the feeling that is going to be the case.

    Valid point!

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.

you can play Dragon Age 3 without doing much boring side quest (around 3-4?) the rest is +50h main stuff. i have a feeling you would still hate it though.

    my top MMOs: UO,DAOC,WoW,GW2

most of my posts are just my opinions they are not facts,it is the same for you too.

After played for years MMO's there are few conditions to be met to be interested in some game at all. And that is MOUSE used to move avatar and keys 0-9 for spells, 3rd person view, ... then possibly tab targeting and for sure not only 5 keys for active spells. I'm afraid Witcher (which I played first release) does not fulfill not a single of this conditions. :-( Otherwise would love to play. It could be also great MMO game.

I'm excited to get and play this, I just need to not get my expectations to high and try and compare it to Skyrim. I generally don't like titles like this that won't allow me to make my own character, but the world looks so alive that I should be able to overlook that. I'm also kind of worried about crafting since I have found very little about it. Hundreds of hours to complete a game is all well in good, but imho if it's just going from one quest giver to the next it will not last anywhere near that long for me.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Valid indeed. Right now I'm playing Star Ocean: The Last Hope (4th and prolly last in the series) and I have 20 hours on the clock already. That has brought me to Roak (5th location) and I think there's still a long way to go. But when I look at the amount of cutscenes I've had till now - guess it's about half the time played...

How you played Star Ocean: The Last Hope beyond the first couple hours shows more dedication than that game is worth. I salute you.

Really looking forward to the game. And like alway's I welcome those extra side quests, makes the gameworld feel more alive then just having a mainstory to follow. I don't mind this in my FPS games but a RPG has to offer much more then that.

I also hope CD Project Red can put some focus on SteamPunk 2077 after the Witcher 3 release's

Not a fan of bringing the bad elements of mmos to Single player RPGs.

If its like fall out where it is somewhat optional to do side content, then its not so bad.

At the end of the day its quality over quantity.

To me the very meaning of side quest is an excuse of filler content that is not going to be anything special. Otherwise if side content was offering different gameplay, it would be a shame to miss out on that content by chance... but hopefully it exists enough throughout the game world.

I still find that single player rpgs lack the fantasy world they try to create, most becuase the epic content is very steam lined and for example in a fatnasy you cant just venture into a cave of trolls. And if oit happened to be a cave of trolls how significant their lifestyle can be seen internally among themselves, and externally in their environments. NPCs are static and the dialogues are in cutscenes.

So the fantasy is very stream lined. Now instead of one example of a troll cave and their life style and impact on those around them, imagine every area has its own breed of miscreants and heros alike and each area exhibiting their own lifestyles with their own heirarchies of upper clasess to their ghetto neighborhoods sa well. There are bars with different gamling games, dirnking games, and different miusical intruments to try.
